Biogeography of Stress: Graded and Threshold Phenological Responses in European Beech-Dominated Forests Under Disruptive Heatwaves.

Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of summer heatwaves, posing a major threat to temperate forests. European beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests are particularly sensitive to thermal extremes. Given their wide distribution, responses to heatwaves are not uniform, and it remains unclear how sensitivity varies at the continental scale. This study aims to quantify how summer disruptive heatwaves (dHWs) reshape phenological dynamics in European beech-dominated forests (BDFs) over 2003-2023 across four major biogeographical regions: Alpine, Atlantic, Continental and Mediterranean.

Leptospirosis in Central Romania: A 17-Year Single-Center Cohort Study of Hospitalized Adults.

Leptospirosis is an important zoonosis that can present as a self-limited influenza-like illness or progress to severe, including life-threatening multiorgan dysfunction. We report the epidemiology, clinical profile, and correlates of severity among adults hospitalized patients with leptospirosis diagnosed in central Romania over a period of 17 years. We conducted a retrospective, single-center cohort study of adults admitted between 1 January 2008 and 1 December 2025 with laboratory-confirmed leptospirosis. Confirmation was based on positive anti-Leptospira IgM serology, with repeat testing w

Mechanisms and therapeutic advances of gut metabolites in the regulation of neuroimmune inflammatory diseases.

Gut-derived metabolites function as critical signaling intermediaries that translate environmental cues into central nervous system (CNS) responses, playing an indispensable role in the pathogenesis and trajectory of neuroimmune inflammatory disorders. Key metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and bile acids, either traverse the blood-brain barrier directly or orchestrate immune modulation peripherally, thereby fine-tuning the dynamic crosstalk between systemic immunity and neural homeostasis. SCFAs exert potent anti-inflammatory effects by promoting regulatory T-cell (Treg) d

Association between cardiovascular diseases and apical periodontitis: An umbrella review with stratification of evidence and sensitivity analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To systematically evaluate epidemiological evidence regarding cardiovascular disease (CVD) and apical periodontitis (AP) associations through umbrella review methodology. DATA: Ten systematic reviews were synthesized, including five meta-analyses encompassing 1108-673,083 participants. Meta-analytical effect sizes demonstrated relative risks ranging from 1.20 to 1.38, odds ratios of 1.53 to 2.94, with substantial between-study heterogeneity (I² = 54 %-100 %). The pooled estimates of RR studies were 1.32[1.0 to 1.62; p = 0.007] and for Odds ratio 1.83[1.33 to 2.53; P < 0.001]. Evid

TGF‑β at the Crossroads: Orchestrating the Bone Metastatic Microenvironment and Shaping Therapeutic Frontiers.

Bone remains one of the most hospitable-and devastating-destinations for metastatic cancer cells. At the center of this unwelcome alliance is transforming growth factor‑β (TGF‑β), a cytokine stored in the mineralized matrix and unleashed during osteoclastic bone resorption. Once activated, TGF‑β fuels a self‑reinforcing "vicious cycle": it co‑opts tumor cells to undergo epithelial‑to‑mesenchymal transition, recruits and primes osteoclasts, suppresses osteoblast function, and shapes an immunosuppressive niche that shields malignant clones. The result is a micro‑environment exquisitely tuned for

Exploring research capacity and capability in a local authority: qualitative insights from leaders and staff.

BACKGROUND: Local authorities in England are ideally placed to address the social determinants of health in the communities they serve. An evidence-led approach to developing programmes and policies to tackle determinants of health is critical to ensuring outcomes are attained and resources are used appropriately. Previous studies though suggest that local authorities do not always use evidence consistently in their decision-making processes. This paper seeks therefore to explore perceived research capability and capacity across one local authority in northern England to understand how researc

Fencing the Flux: Seasonal Trends, Environmental Drivers, and Mitigation Opportunities of Methane Emissions From Farm Dams.

Farm dams are significant methane (CH4) sources in agricultural landscapes. Fencing them to limit livestock access reduces organic matter and nutrient inputs, thereby limiting CH4 emissions. However, existing studies on the benefits of fencing are constrained by short durations, omission of ebullitive fluxes, limited spatial and temporal coverage, and small sample sizes. Here, we report a large-scale, multi-season assessment of total CH4 (diffusive + ebullitive) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes from fenced and unfenced farm dams, along key environmental drivers. We monitored 113 farm dams in te

The Role of Oxidative Stress in Ischaemic Stroke and the Influence of Gut Microbiota.

Ischaemic stroke is the most prevalent stroke subtype, accounting for 80-90% of all cases worldwide, and remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Its pathophysiology involves complex molecular cascades, with oxidative stress playing a central role. During cerebral ischaemia, reduced blood flow deprives neurons of essential oxygen and nutrients, triggering excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and excessive production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). Not only do these species damage cellular components, but they also activate inflammatory pathways, particularly th

Long-lasting neurobehavioral disorders after traumatic brain injury: potential predictors and functional outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often leads to neurobehavioral disorders (NBDs) that hinder functional recovery. Although demographic (gender, age, years of education) and clinical factors (post-traumatic amnesia duration [PTA], Glasgow Coma Scale severity) have been studied as potential predictors of NBDs, the impact of the levels of cognitive functioning (LCF) and traumatic axonal injury (TAI) has received less attention. AIM: This study investigates the relationship between the variables and the onset of NBDs following TBI. It also examines the correlation between NBDs and patient

Shotgun sequencing of airborne eDNA achieves rapid assessment of whole biomes, population genetics and genomic variation.

Biodiversity and its associated genetic diversity are being lost at an unprecedented rate. Simultaneously, the distributions of flora, fauna, fungi, microbes and pathogens are rapidly changing. Novel technology can help to capture and record genetic diversity before it is lost and to measure population shifts and pathogen distributions. Here we report the rapid application of shotgun long-read environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis for non-invasive biodiversity, genetic diversity and pathogen assessments from air. We also compared air eDNA with water and soil eDNA. Coupling long-read sequencing wit

Bio-integration of rhizobacteria and biogenic silver nanoparticles against Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae causing plum bacterial canker.

BACKGROUND: Plum is a nutritionally and medicinally valuable fruit with high economic value; however, in temperate regions, its yield continuously suffers from bacterial canker caused by Pseudomonas syringae pathovars. RESULTS: To bridge the research gap, a study was conducted to optimize the use of rhizobacteria and biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for controlling bacterial canker in plums. Rhizobacteria were isolated from plum orchards and identified (through 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, phylogenetic analysis using MEGA) and further evaluated for plant growth-promoting characteristics (s

A Comparison of Wound Related Complications Between Intramedullary and Lateral Plate Osteosynthesis After Fibula Osteotomy in the Lateral Approach Total Ankle Replacement.

BACKGROUND: Total ankle replacement (TAR) has evolved in the last decade from a procedure rife with complication and failure to a promising alternative to arthrodesis. The ability to maintain ankle joint range of motion is showing great promise in patient-reported outcomes, postsurgical pain, as well as long-term sequalae of joint fusion. Although TAR can be performed via either an anterior or lateral approach both with their own sets of benefits and potential complications, the consensus seems to be that one is no better than the other when performed by high-volume surgeons. METHODS: Data we

First report of VGSC mutations for resistance to synthetic pyrethroids in brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu stricto) from Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Brown dog ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), have spread globally and are an important vector of multiple pathogens affecting both dogs and humans. The control of these ticks on dogs and human dwellings often relies on synthetic pyrethroids, a chemical class of acaricides that targets the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) protein of arthropod nerve cells, causing influxes of sodium and ultimately, paralysis. Invasive Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. ticks in the Americas can be broadly grouped into two main lineages: temperate and tropical (Rh. sanguineus sensu stric

Tracking pyrethroid resistance in arbovirus mosquito vectors: mutations I1532T and F1534C in Aedes albopictus across Europe.

BACKGROUND: With the worldwide spread of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, the number of autochthonous cases of exotic arboviral diseases, such as dengue or chikungunya, is increasing in temperate regions. In Europe, pyrethroids are the only insecticides allowed for the abatement of adult mosquitoes and are thus crucial for limiting ongoing arbovirus transmission. Despite this and the report of resistance rising in vector populations worldwide, information on the pyrethroid resistance status of vector populations and knowledge on resistance mechanisms is widely lacking. Genotyping of

A murine coronavirus infection platform identifies proviral and proinflammatory activities of SARS-CoV-2 accessory protein 7a.

UNLABELLED: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and related sarbecoviruses encode a set of accessory proteins (3a, 3b, 6, 7a, 7b, 8, 9b, and 10) that control host responses to infection and promote virus growth. Of these accessory proteins, 7a is set apart by its intracellular localization near CoV budding sites and its incorporation into secreted virions. To investigate 7a functions during CoV infections under biosafety level 2 conditions, we constructed recombinant mouse hepatitis viruses (rMHVs) (rMHV strain A59) that express sarbecovirus 7a genes. Comparative infec
