[Working memory in schizophrenia: a review].

INTRODUCTION: Working memory refers to a limited capacity system for temporary storage and processing of information that is known to depend on the integrity of the prefrontal cortex. It has been classically described as composed of a "central executive" that performs control, selection and planning functions, and two "slave" systems: on the one hand, the phonological loop that holds verbal, speech-based representations, and on the other hand, the visuospatial sketchpad that manipulates spatial and object visual representations. LITERATURE FINDINGS: Studies in schizophrenia have used differen

Cognitive Improvement and Brain Changes after Real-Time Functional MRI Neurofeedback Training in Healthy Elderly and Prodromal Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline is characteristic for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and also for healthy ageing. As a proof-of-concept study, we examined whether this decline can be counteracted using real-time fMRI neurofeedback training. Visuospatial memory and the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) were targeted. METHODS: Sixteen healthy elderly subjects (mean age 63.5 years, SD = 6.663) and 10 patients with prodromal AD (mean age 66.2 years, SD = 8.930) completed the experiment. Four additional healthy subjects formed a sham-feedback condition to validate the paradigm. The protocol spanned five examina

The extraoral examination from the perspective of the patient.

PURPOSE: Literature suggests that the extraoral examination frequently is not offered to patients in the dental setting. The main purpose of this study was to learn more about the patients' perspective regarding the extraoral examination as performed during a dental hygiene appointment. Also of interest was the frequency with which the subjects reported having had an extraoral examination performed on them at a prior dental or medical visit. The importance of the role and responsibility of the dental hygienist in regards to performing the extraoral examination was discussed as a means of demon

Patient engagement in fertility research: bench research, ethics, and social justice.

BACKGROUND: Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research is increasingly being utilized to better connect patients and researchers. The Patient Engagement Studio (PES) supports PPI in research by working directly with researchers throughout various stages of their projects. Recently, two researchers presented to the PES for assistance with their project, Embryo+™. The purpose of Embryo+™ is to decrease miscarriage rates using RNA sequencing technology that screens for the most viable embryos. To date, no examples of PPI directly in the planning or implementation of bench research concernin

Mapping staff perspectives towards the delivery of hospital care for children and young people with and without learning disabilities in England: a mixed methods national study.

BACKGROUND: Children and young people (CYP) with learning disabilities (LD) are a vulnerable population with increased risk of abuse and accidental injury and whose parents have reported concerns about the quality, safety and accessibility of their hospital care. The Care Quality Commission's (CQC) view of best practice for this group of patients includes: access to senior LD nurse provision; a clearly visible flagging system for identifying them; the use of hospital passports; and defined communication strategies (Glasper, Comp Child Adolesc Nurs 40:63-67, 2017). What remains unclear is wheth

Auditory Lexical Decision and Repetition in Children: Effects of Acoustic and Lexical Constraints.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to identify factors that may detract from children's ability to identify words they do and do not know. Factors investigated were acoustic constraints stemming from the presence of hearing loss (HL) or an acoustic competitor, and lexical constraints due to an impoverished or cluttered vocabulary. DESIGN: Eleven children with normal hearing (NH) and 11 children with bilateral, mild to moderately severe sensorineural HL were asked to categorize and repeat two-syllable real and nonsense words. Stimuli were amplified and frequency shaped for each child

BDNF val66met affects hippocampal volume and emotion-related hippocampal memory activity.

The val(66)met polymorphism on the BDNF gene has been reported to explain individual differences in hippocampal volume and memory-related activity. These findings, however, have not been replicated consistently and no studies to date controlled for the potentially confounding impact of early life stress, such as childhood abuse, and psychiatric status. Using structural and functional MRI, we therefore investigated in 126 depressed and/or anxious patients and 31 healthy control subjects the effects of val(66)met on hippocampal volume and encoding activity of neutral, positive and negative words

Schizophrenic auditory hallucinations are associated with increased regional cerebral blood flow during verbal memory activation in a study using single photon emission computed tomography.

Single photon emission tomography with split-dose technetium-99m-d, l-hexamethyl-propylene amine oxime was used to measure regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during a memory-activation paradigm in a group of 18 medicated DSM-III-R schizophrenic patients. The relationship between clinical features of schizophrenia and rCBF patterns was examined. Increased blood flow to the left basal ganglia was revealed during activation in patients reporting hallucinations in the previous month, a finding that was not influenced by medication dose or other confounding variables. This result adds to previous

Abnormal recruitment of working memory updating networks during maintenance of trauma-neutral information in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterised by disturbances in concentration and memory, symptoms which are a source of further distress for patients. Related to this, abnormalities in underlying working memory (WM) systems have been identified [Clark, C.R., McFarlane, A.C., Morris, P., Weber, D.L., Sonkkilla, C., Shaw, M.E., Marcina, J., Tochon-Danguy, H.J., Egan, G.F., 2003. Extra-axial cerebrospinal fluid in high-risk and normal-risk children with autism aged 2-4 years: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: We previously showed, in two separate cohorts, that high-risk infants who were later diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder had abnormally high extra-axial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volume from age 6-24 months. The presence of increased extra-axial CSF volume preceded the onset of behavioural symptoms of autism and was predictive of a later diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. In this study, we aimed to establish whether increased extra-axial CSF volume is found in a large, independent sample of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, whether extra-axial CSF remains ab

The usefulness of growth hormone treatment for psychological status in young adult survivors of childhood leukaemia: an open-label study.

BACKGROUND: To reduce the risk of brain damage children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) are nowadays mainly treated with intrathecal chemotherapy (ITC) instead of central nervous system (CNS) radiation therapy (CRT) to prevent CNS relapse. However, chemotherapy may also lead to cognitive deficits. As growth hormone deficiency (GHD) or impaired growth hormone secretion are frequently found in ALL patients treated with cranial radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy, we hypothesized that GH therapy may reduce cognitive deficits in these patients. METHODS: Twenty young adult survivors of

Detection of Huntington's disease decades before diagnosis: the Predict-HD study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the Predict-HD study is to use genetic, neurobiological and refined clinical markers to understand the early progression of Huntington's disease (HD), prior to the point of traditional diagnosis, in persons with a known gene mutation. Here we estimate the approximate onset and initial course of various measurable aspects of HD relative to the time of eventual diagnosis. METHODS: We studied 438 participants who were positive for the HD gene mutation, but did not yet meet the diagnostic criteria for HD and had no functional decline. Predictability of baseline cogniti
