Evoked potential testing.

Electrophysiologic tests of the sacral neuromuscular system and its suprasegmental control may be divided into EMG and methods involving stimulation (i.e., evoked potential and sacral reflex testing). The latter group of methods tests the function of defined parts of the motor or sensory nervous system, or reflex arcs. There already is ample experience with testing the somatic sensory pathways (pudendal SEP) and the (somatic) sacral reflex arc, whereas other methods (testing the motor system and tests involving visceral afferents and sympathetic efferents) need further study to establish their

Phantom limb pain: are cutaneous nociceptors and spinothalamic neurons involved in the signaling and maintenance of spontaneous and touch-evoked pain? A case report.

A patient suffered multiple fractures of the right leg and a left brain-stem infarction involving the anterolateral fasciculus of the central nociceptive system following multiple trauma. Later, the right leg was amputated, resulting in spontaneous and touch-evoked phantom pain and mechanical stump allodynia. However, quantitative sensory testing revealed considerable impairment of sensations normally mediated by cutaneous nociceptors and central spinothalamic systems on the right body side, including the stump but nearly intact touch and vibration senses. Quantitative assessment of peripheral

[A case of narcolepsy with increased cataplectic attacks after suffering from cerebrovascular disease].

It is well known that narcoleptic patients have DR2 and DQw-1 on HLA typing. The development of narcolepsy is considered to depend on the two factors; genetic predispositions and exogenous factors such as head trauma, encephalitis, etc., mainly affecting the brainstem or diencephalon. We reported a 46-year-old man who had occasional sleep attacks after suffering from left thalamic hemorrhage and pontine vascular disorders. Rehabilitation was markedly disturbed due to frequent episodes of cataplectic attacks which was triggered by emotional lability such as laughing, anxiety, and excitement. HL

Differentiation of cardiac baroreflex properties by cuff and drug methods in two rabbit strains.

Sigmoidal mean arterial pressure (MAP)-heart rate (HR) curves were obtained in two genetically related strains of rabbits (groups I and II). We examined vagal (V) and sympathetic (S) effects on HR using perivascular cuffs and vasoactive drugs to alter MAP, and we studied the effects of intravenous naloxone, which affected only I. With the cuff method, both V and S components of gain were much greater in I than in II, and naloxone greatly reduced the difference. With the drug method, gain was similar in I and II and unaffected by naloxone. With both methods, the V component of HR range between

The use of antibodies developed by infertile women to identify relevant antigens.

In the first half of this century several studies demonstrated that temporary infertility may be induced by immunizing women with semen. Isolated examples of acute hypersensitivity reactions to sexual intercourse provide dramatic evidence that natural isoimmunization to semen occurs in man. The afferent immunological pathway in this process can be influenced by adjuvant effects of genital tract infection. This may be important in assessing the significance of antisperm antibodies in infertile women. In immunological studies of female infertility, the 3 most commonly used tests for humoral anti

Absence of sensory neurons before target innervation in brain-derived neurotrophic factor-, neurotrophin 3-, and TrkC-deficient embryonic mice.

Gene-targeting experiments of Trk receptors and neurotrophins has confirmed the expectation that embryonic sensory and sympathetic neurons require neurotrophin function for survival. They have further revealed correlation between a specific neurotrophin requirement and eventual sensory modality. We have analyzed embryonic and neonatal mice with mutations in the BDNF, neurotrophin 3 (NT-3), and TrkC genes. Our data confirm an unexpectedly high proportion of sensory neuron losses in NT-3 (>70%), BDNF (>20%), and TrkC (>30%) mutants, which encompass populations thought to be NGF-dependent. Direct

Speech-ABR in contralateral noise: A potential tool to evaluate rostral part of the auditory efferent system.

In parallel with the auditory afferent system, the auditory efferent system is active in all parts of the auditory pathways from auditory cortex to the cochlea. The auditory efferent system has two main segments: the rostral and the caudal parts. The rostral part, which starts from the cortical centers to thalamic nuclei and continues into collicular pathways in rostral brainstem, which sends its neural fibers to the main collicular nuclei especially inferior colliculus. The caudal part includes the olivocochlear bundle, which originates from the superior olivary complex and terminates on the

Control of gill ventilation and air-breathing in the bowfin amia calva.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles of branchial and gas bladder reflex pathways in the control of gill ventilation and a … nerve denervation, O2-sensitive chemoreceptors that regulate air-breathing may be carried in other afferent pathways, such as the pseudobranch. Gas bladder deflation reflexly stimulates type II breaths, suggesting that gas bladder volume-sensitive stretch receptors control this particular air-breathing mechanism. It is likely that type II air breaths function to r …

The deep layers of the superior colliculus.

The evidence is compelling that the deep layers of the SC are involved in the translation of sensory signals into motor commands for the con … cal and functional organization of the SC remain. The physiological signals conveyed to the SC over afferent pathways are, for the most part, unknown. The intrinsic organization of the SC is poorly understood; and the question of whether or not there is extensive communication between neurons in the superficial and deep divisions has not yet been resolved. Very lit …

Anatomical Mapping of Lymphatic Leakage Leading to Symptomatic Lymphoceles Formation After Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection for Prostate Cancer.

PURPOSE: The role of pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) during radical prostatectomy (RP) remains controversial. PLND morbidity, particulary lymphocele formation, is the main argument against PLND, despite level one evidence demonstrating metastasis reduction with extended PLND. The aim of this study is to identify the precise anatomical sites and mechanisms of lymphocele formation after RP and to propose preventive surgical modifications. METHODS: In this prospective, single-center study, we included patients who developed symptomatic lymphoceles after RP with extended PLND or salvage PLND

Gut microbiota as a novel therapeutic target for eating disorders and obesity.

The gut-brain axis constitutes a bidirectional communication network linking the intestinal microbiota and the central nervous system. Through this communication axis, the gut microbiota exerts a major influence on food intake under physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Exposure to a Western diet has been associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, leading to profound changes in the gut-brain axis and promoting compulsive-like eating patterns. Alterations in the gut microbiota influence brain activity via multiple routes, including activation of vagal afferents, modulation of s

Comprehensive analysis of ATF3 as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker from pan-cancer to clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: ATF3 was found to play a complex role in various cancers; however, its systematic function in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) and across pan-cancer contexts remained incompletely understood. METHODS: A comprehensive evaluation of ATF3 expression, diagnostic efficacy, prognostic relevance, and its association with the tumor immune microenvironment was conducted across multiple cancer types using publicly available databases. In KIRC, ATF3 expression in cell lines was validated through real-time quantitative PCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence tests. Assessments of im

Acid-sensing ion channels in the vasculature: emerging roles in systemic and pulmonary circulations.

Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are proton-gated members of the degenerin/epithelial sodium channel family that are emerging as multifaceted regulators of cardiovascular function. ASICs expressed in baroreceptor, cardiac, and skeletal muscle afferents contribute to reflex control of blood pressure, cardiac function, and sympathetic outflow. In vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells, ASICs integrate mechanical, metabolic, and humoral signals to regulate vascular tone. In the systemic circulation, ASIC2 contributes to pressure-dependent vasoconstriction of renal and cerebral arteries, su

Harnessing Spinal Cord Stimulation and Neuromodulation for Functional Restoration: From Pain Management to Motor Recovery.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has expanded beyond pain treatment, becoming a neuromodulatory method capable of recruiting spinal and supraspinal circuits involved in motor recovery. This review summarises mechanistic knowledge, supports engineering developments, and describes the changing clinical translation of SCS in rehabilitation. Mounting scientific data shows that SCS's effects go beyond dorsal column modulation and may involve segmental networks that promote activity-dependent plasticity and sensorimotor pathway restoration, probably due to a combination of Hebbian and non-Hebbian mecha

Research progress on the effects of epidural electrical stimulation on lower extremity function in patients with spinal cord injury.

Lower extremity motor dysfunction after spinal cord injury (SCI) represents a major determinant of long-term disability and reduced quality of life. Although conventional pharmacotherapy and rehabilitation training may partially attenuate secondary injury and preserve residual function, their capacity to restore motor networks below the level of injury remains limited. In recent years, epidural electrical stimulation (EES), through targeted modulation of lumbosacral dorsal root afferents and local interneuronal circuits, has been shown to increase the excitability of spinal motor networks and

Effects of pharyngolaryngeal injury on nociceptive swallowing reflexes.

OBJECTIVES: Although pharyngolaryngeal injury impairs water-evoked swallowing, its influence on nociceptive swallowing reflexes remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effects of pharyngolaryngeal injury on nociceptive receptor-dependent swallowing reflexes. METHODS: Adult male rats underwent endoscopic evaluation of swallowing under anesthesia. The number, latency, and swallowing intervals were quantified. Distilled water, capsaicin (TRPV1 agonist), and allyl isothiocyanate (AITC, TRPA1 agonist) were infused onto the pharyngolaryngeal surface via a syringe pump at a con

Layer-specific spine remodeling and synaptopodin-linked spine resilience in the mouse dentate gyrus following entorhinal denervation.

Following brain injury, neurons receiving afferent input from the site of injury become denervated. An established model for studying denervation-induced changes of neurons is the denervation of dentate granule cells following unilateral transection of the perforant pathway. In response to denervation, granule cells show a characteristic sequence of spine loss followed by spine recovery. Notably, some spines are more resistant to denervation than others, and the basis of this resilience is unknown. As in vitro data suggest that the actin-modulating protein synaptopodin stabilizes denervated sp

Spike-Based Neuromorphic Model of Spasticity for Generation of Affected Neural Activity.

Spasticity is a common motor symptom that disrupt muscle contraction and hence movements. Proper management of spasticity requires identification of its origins and reasoning of the therapeutic plans. Challenges arise because spasticity might originate from elevated activity in both the cortical and sub-cortical pathways. No existing models (animal or computational) could cover all possibilities leading to spasticity, especially the peripheral causes such as hyperreflexia. To bridge this gap, this work develops a novel computational, spike-based neuromorphic model of spasticity, named NEUSPA.

Bone mechanical loading reduces heart rate and increases heart rate variability in mice.

Cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis are clinically associated. Bone adapts to mechanical forces by altering its overall structure and mass. In response to mechanical strain bone cells release signaling molecules and activate the nervous system. Bone also exhibits endocrine functions that modulate a number of tissues including the heart. We hypothesized that bone mechanical loading acutely alters cardiac function via neural and/or endocrine mechanisms. To test this hypothesis, we performed in vivo tibia mechanical loading in anesthetized mice while monitoring heart parameters using electroc

Hypothalamic Paraventricular Stimulation Inhibits Nociceptive Wide Dynamic Range Trigeminocervical Complex Cells via Oxytocinergic Transmission.

Oxytocinergic transmission blocks nociception at the peripheral, spinal, and supraspinal levels through the oxytocin receptor (OTR). Indeed, a neuronal pathway from the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) to the spinal cord and trigeminal nucleus caudalis (Sp5c) has been described. Hence, although the trigeminocervical complex (TCC), an anatomical area spanning the Sp5c, C1, and C2 regions, plays a role in some pain disorders associated with craniofacial structures (e.g., migraine), the role of oxytocinergic transmission in modulating nociception at this level has been poorly explored.
