Personalizing ketamine therapy: Real-world predictors of response to IV ketamine and intranasal esketamine in treatment-resistant depression.

BACKGROUND: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) poses significant clinical challenges, often necessitating alternative treatments such as i … le analyses evaluated the impact of treatment type, psychiatric comorbidities (none, anxiety, PTSD, borderline personality disorder [BPD], multiple), number of failed medications, age, and gender on treatment outcomes. RESULTS: Both treatments significantly reduced depressive symptoms (MADRS mean change: -8.9; PHQ-9: -4, p < 0.0001). IV ketamine produced a greater MADRS reducti …

Stress-Mediated Abnormalities in Regional Myocardial Wall Motion in Young Women with a History of Psychological Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stress has been associated with the development and progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Previously, we reported subtle differences in global longitudinal strain in somatically healthy women with a psychiatric diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study aimed to investigate the impact of BPD on segmental myocardial wall motion using speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) analysis. METHODS: A total of 100 women aged between 18 and 38 years were included in this study. Fifty patients meeting the diagnostic criteria for BPD wer…

Ultra-Low-Dose Buprenorphine as a Time-Limited Treatment for Severe Suicidal Ideation: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal ideation and behavior currently have no quick-acting pharmacological treatments that are suitable for independent outpat … ks (mean difference=-7.1, 95% CI=-12.0, -2.3). Concurrent use of antidepressants and a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder did not affect the response to buprenorphine. No withdrawal symptoms were reported after treatment discontinuation at the end of the trial. CONCLUSIONS: The time-limited, short-term use of very low dosages of sublingual buprenorphine was associated …

Personality disorders as predictors of intimate partner violence: A meta-analysis.

Despite years of research demonstrating a relation between personality pathology and intimate partner violence (IPV), no meta-analysis has been published examining how well, or poorly, all ten personality disorders (PDs) predict IPV perpetration or victimization, nor has any meta-analysis examined these relations across types of IPV. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to synthesize existing research on the effects of all ten PDs, as well as psychopathy and global PD symptoms, on physical, psychological, and sexual IPV perpetration and victimization. Shame-coping clusters: comparisons regarding attachment insecurities, mentalizing deficits, and personality pathology, controlling for general emotion dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: General Emotion Dysregulation (GED) is increasingly implicated as an underlying factor in personality pathology; however, the regulation of specific emotions, such as shame, has been relatively overlooked in the literature. We aimed to identify distinct clusters of shame-coping/regulation and compare them regarding attachment insecurities, mentalizing deficits, and personality pathology, controlling for GED. METHODS: A convenience sample of 600 participants (351 females and 249 males) from the general population with ages ranging from 18 to 65 (M = 33.78, SD = 12.80) completed a b

Personality disorder and suicide risk among patients in the veterans affairs health system.

Among veterans in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care, patients with mental health and substance use conditions experience elevated suicide rates. However, despite previously demonstrated high rates of suicidal behavior, little is known regarding suicide rates among veteran VHA users with personality disorders (PDs) as a whole, or by PD clusters (A: Eccentric; B: Dramatic; C: Fearful; and PD-not otherwise specified). PD prevalence and suicide rates were assessed through 2017; overall and by clusters for 5,517,024 veterans alive as of 12/31/2013 and with more than 2 VHA encounters in 2012

EEG low-voltage alpha and alpha power in African American young adults: relation to family history of alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Several studies support an association between having a low-voltage EEG and alcohol dependence; however, it is not clear whether this measure represents a risk marker or is a result of years of heavy drinking. The present study's aims were to investigate the prevalence of low-voltage alpha EEG variants in African American young adults who have not yet developed alcohol dependence and to test for associations between low-voltage alpha (LVA) EEG, alpha power, and a family history of alcohol dependence. METHODS: Clinical ratings and spectral characteristics of the EEG, collected usin

[Viewing of horror and violence videos by adolescence. A study of speech samples of video consumers with the Gottschalk-Gleser Speech Content analysis].

It turned out that a high percentage of mainly male pupils of Hauptschulen (upper division of elementary schools) and special schools excessively and regularly consumed films which were on the index (X-rated) or seized depicting horror and violence. Subsequent to the inquiry through questionnaires and different personality tests, speech samples of 51 test persons were recorded on tape. 5 speech samples had to be excluded from further investigation since they contained less than 70

Mood disturbances in motor neurone disease.

This study explores the severity of depression and anxiety experienced by patients suffering from motor neurone disease and seeks to link this to illness progression, recent life events and personality factors. The 18 patients who participated in the study were assessed for the presence of psychiatric symptoms using the Beck Depressive Inventory and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The severity of the illness and the life events during the course of the illness were measured using the Norris scale and the Holmes and Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale. A personality assessment was

The association between self-reported anxiety symptoms and suicidality.

This cross-sectional study assessed the association between self-reported anxiety symptoms and self-reported suicidality among a mixed diagnostic sample of psychiatric outpatients. Data were obtained from chart review of 2,778 outpatients who completed a routine diagnostic clinical interview and a standardized self-report of psychiatric symptoms on admission. Bivariate analyses indicated that those with >or= moderate anxiety symptoms were over three times as likely to report >or= moderate difficulty with suicidality. Self-reported anxiety symptoms were associated with a 2-fold increased likeli

The relationship between overall defensive functioning and the Personality Assessment Inventory borderline and treatment outcome scales.

Mature defense mechanisms support patients' engagement in psychotherapy. The Overall Defensive Functioning (ODF) scale of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) Defensive Functioning Scale (DFS) is a measure of the maturity of patients' defenses. Immature defenses (e.g., splitting) and poor emotion regulation are hallmarks of borderline personality organization, and both can interfere with positive treatment engagement. We predicted that ODF would significantly and negatively correlate with the Personality Assessment Inventory Borderline (PAI-BOR) sc

Is reflective functioning associated with clinical symptoms and long-term course in patients with personality disorders?

OBJECTIVE: Mentalization is the capacity to understand behavior as the expression of various mental states and is assumed to be important in a range of psychopathologies, especially personality disorders (PDs). The first aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between mentalization capacity, operationalized as reflective functioning (RF), and clinical manifestations before entering study treatment. The second aim was to investigate the relationship between baseline RF and long-term clinical outcome both independent of treatment (predictor analyses) and dependent on treatme

Time to put aside the false dichotomy between personality disorders and psychotic symptoms.

Unlike internalizing and externalizing symptoms, psychotic symptoms (e.g., hallucinations, delusions) are manifestations of personality disorders (PDs) that are more controversial and poorly understood. This leaves clinicians with very little guidance for clinical practice, especially for diagnosis. What is more, most reviews have focused strictly on the links between psychotic symptoms and the categorically defined borderline PD, which contrasts with the growing movement that emphasizes a dimensional perspective (especially in psychology). Thus, the objectives of this critical review will be
