Identifying food environment policies and research needs in Latin America and the Caribbean: insights from the Community of Practice in Nutrition and Health in Latin America and the Caribbean (COLANSA).

BACKGROUND: Nutrition-related health issues remain a significant public health challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), where rapid transformations in food systems have contributed to increasing obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases. Government policies are key to shaping healthier food environments, but their implementation and evaluation vary widely across countries. This study aimed to identify national-level public policies that promote healthy food environments in the LAC region and to outline priority areas for research to strengthen their implementation, from the

Disrupting antimicrobial resistance in food systems from a One Health perspective: a complex systems analysis in Canada, Senegal and the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Food systems are a key contributor to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Given the multi-sectoral nature of AMR, a One Health perspective has been advocated. Recent research situates AMR as an emerging property of a complex system, a perspective which can help identify root drivers of AMR and theorise the impacts of proposed solutions. This study aims to combine systems modelling and a One Health perspective to identify system-level dynamics and priority actions for addressing AMR in food systems. METHODS: We used group model building, a participatory approach to systems modelling, i

Beyond Training: Systems Framework for Sustainable Health Informatics Investment in Africa.

Across Africa, substantial investment has built national health information systems (HISs), including the surveillance platforms, reporting tools, and digital infrastructure through which health data flow. However, the health informatics capacity needed to sustain those systems remains fragile: trained health informaticians leave for better-resourced organizations, platforms fall into disrepair when donor funding ends, and data systems multiply without connecting. Health informatics is the discipline that designs, governs, and sustains HISs; the two are inseparable, and investment that builds

Influence of Cell Size Changes after Irradiation on Reliability of an Impedance Measurement-based Hematology Analyzer.

Radiological nuclear scenarios remain a persistent threat due to civil use and military possession of radiation sources. Therefore, it is crucial to be prepared for events involving a large number of patients exposed to radiation. In such cases, it is important to quickly and simply predict whether potential patients will develop severe, mild, or no Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS). To address this challenge, the Bundeswehr Institute of Radiobiology developed the H-module, a prediction module that estimates the severity of ARS based on peripheral blood cell counts in the context of an exposure e

Assessing the implementation of national sodium reduction policies in Nigeria: an interim qualitative evaluation of stakeholder perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Population-wide dietary sodium reduction is a global priority and a highly cost-effective strategy to lower blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular disease risk. In response, the Nigerian government launched the National Multi-sectoral Action Plan (NMSAP) in 2019, recommending evidence-based policy actions including limiting sodium in processed foods, restricting food advertising especially for children, promoting public awareness, integrating nutrition education in schools, and front-of-package labeling. We conducted a qualitative study to examine progress, barriers, and facili

Population-Level Implications of Parental Similarity for the Prevalence and Heritability of Psychiatric Disorders.

IMPORTANCE: Partner similarity for psychiatric traits, often attributed to assortative mating, has been repeatedly documented, but its theoretical consequences for the prevalence and heritability of psychiatric disorders have been examined only under strong and often unrealistic assumptions and have never been empirically estimated using population-based data. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the extent of partner similarity for psychiatric and somatic disorders and to estimate its empirical intergenerational implications for the prevalence and heritability of psychiatric disorders and their correspond

Factors associated with survival after pediatric in-hospital cardiac arrest: A national database analysis 2015-2022.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is frequently fatal, and evidence from middle-income settings needed to guide quality improvement is sparse. We used nationwide Thai data to quantify incidence and mortality trends, describe long-term outcomes, and identify associated factors for post-discharge death after pediatric IHCA. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the Thai National Health Security Office database encompassing all hospitalizations under the universal health-coverage scheme from 1 January 2015-31 December 2022. Children <18 years with IHCA we

Increasing access to CAR-T therapy: a case study of an academic hospital's alternative innovation model.

BACKGROUND: Increasing costs of drugs for rare diseases have raised concerns about health systems’ sustainability and equitable access to these therapies. Newer and highly effective orphan drugs, such as Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell (CAR-T) therapies, highlight the need for alternative innovation models that can offer greater affordability and accessibility. This case study examines Hospital Clínic Barcelona’s (HCB) alternative innovation model to develop ARI-0001 (varnimcabtagene autoleucel), a novel CAR-T therapy for certain forms of leukemia, at a price two-thirds lower than comparable

Prehospital airway and operational management of severe ammonia intoxication: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ammonia inhalation can cause rapid airway compromise and noncardiogenic pulmonary oedema. Although hospital management has been described, prehospital strategies in severe cases remain largely undocumented. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old obese male (160 kg) was exposed to an ammonia cloud at a decommissioned power plant. He presented with mucosal burns, severe dyspnoea, and hypoxemia despite high-flow oxygen. Prehospital providers initiated nebulized adrenaline, performed ocular irrigation, and prepared for surgical airway backup. Rapid sequence intubation was conducted under vi

Traditional practices versus modern healthcare: Determinants of traditional medicine use after potential dog bites among dog-owning households in Nigeria.

Canine rabies is endemic in Nigeria, with a low dog vaccination rate. Often, dog bite victims resort to traditional remedies, which can lead to fatalities. Our study investigated factors influencing decisions to seek traditional remedies in Nigeria. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2022 involving 4,162 dog-owning households. A joint random effect Bayesian regression model was developed to examine the role of sociodemographic, socioeconomic, and infrastructural covariates. This model included a latent variable measuring a respondent's understanding of rabies risk based on literacy levels

Factors associated with perceived barriers to canine rabies vaccination among owners of unvaccinated dogs in Sierra Leone.

Dog vaccination is the most effective method for preventing rabies virus transmission and human deaths. However, in Sierra Leone, vaccination rates remain low, and the reasons for non-vaccination are not well understood. We analysed 2023 household survey data using a hierarchical Bayesian multinomial regression to provide insight into perceived barriers to canine rabies vaccination among owners of unvaccinated dogs. Our results indicated that of the 2558 dog-owning households interviewed, only 14 % (358) reported having fully vaccinated their dogs. Of the 2200 respondents with unvaccinated dog
