Lifestyle and food habits changes after migration: a focus on immigrant women in Modena (Italy).

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore post-migration lifestyle and weight changes in a sample of migrant women recruited in Modena, Italy. Taking into account the importance of the perceived personal susceptibility in improving prevention and treatment seeking behaviors, we further investigated women's self-recognition of overweight/obesity. We also examined the changes in self-perceived quality of life after the arrival in Modena. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 97 female migrants visiting a family counseling in Modena. Socio-demographic information, post-migration cha

[Neurophobia].

Neurophobia is the fear of neurological diseases. Its main symptom is that medical students and young doctors are not able to utilize their basic neurological knowledge at the bedside. According to statistics, every second student suffers from neurophobia. This attitude could explain why in the last two decades less and less young doctors wanted to become neurologist. Medical students complain that they receive no instructions, and are afraid of loosing their interest and of facing the failure of their clinical competence. The hardship of neurology was explained by the insufficient knowledge o

Childhood socio-economic status and the onset, persistence, and severity of DSM-IV mental disorders in a US national sample.

Although significant associations between childhood socio-economic status (SES) and adult mental disorders have been widely documented, SES has been defined using several different indicators often considered alone. Little research has examined the relative importance of these different indicators in accounting for the overall associations of childhood SES with adult outcomes. Nor has previous research distinguished associations of childhood SES with first onsets of mental disorders in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood from those with persistence of these disorders into adulthood in accoun

New patterns of Trichinella infection.

Human and animal trichinellosis should be considered as both an emerging and reemerging disease. The reemergence of the domestic cycle has been due to an increased prevalence of Trichinella spiralis, which has been primarily related to a breakdown of government veterinary services and state farms (e.g., in countries of the former USSR, Bulgaria, Romania), economic problems and war (e.g., in countries of the former Yugoslavia), resulting in a sharp increase in the occurrence of this infection in swine herds in the 1990s, with a prevalence of up to 50% in villages in Byelorussia, Croatia, Latvia

Vascular surgeon-hospitalist comanagement improves in-hospital mortality at the expense of increased in-hospital cost.

OBJECTIVE: We have shown that vascular surgeon- hospitalist co management resulted in improved in-hospital mortality rates. We now aim to assess the impact of the hospitalist co management service (HCS) on healthcare cost. METHODS: A total of 1558 patients were divided into three cohorts and compared: 516 in 2012, 525 in 2013, and 517 in 2014. The HCS began in January 2013. Data were standardized for six vascular surgeons that were present 2012-2014. New attendings were excluded. Ten hospitalists participated. Case mix index (CMI), contribution margin, total hospital charges (THCs), length of

Impact of Patient Age on Age-Adjusted Minimum Alveolar Concentration Fractions and Prolonged Tracheal Extubations Where Anesthesia Machines Display the Fractions.

Introduction Prolonged time to tracheal extubation after general anesthesia is defined as an interval of 15 minutes or longer from the recorded end of surgery to the actual removal of the tracheal tube. Thereafter, the operating room team is idle, so prolonged extubations reduce workflow and the productivity of anesthesia clinicians. During inhalational anesthesia, the overwhelming majority of prolonged times to tracheal extubation are caused by substantial residual doses at the completion of the surgical procedure. The minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) fraction is the end-tidal inhalationa

Animal welfare in deep-bedded pig systems: A systematic review, evidence synthesis, and translational frameworks for sustainable veterinary practice.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Deep-bedded housing systems have been increasingly adopted as alternatives to conventional pig production because they provide manipulable substrates, improve behavioral opportunities, and support circular manure management. However, their effects on animal welfare, production performance, and environmental sustainability remain inconsistent across production stages, bedding materials, and management systems. Furthermore, evidence comparing individual bedding materials is fragmented, particularly for tropical substrates such as rice husk. This systematic review aimed to cri

Changes in Microbial Foodborne Pathogen Detection in Beijing, China, Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: Single-Center Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Foodborne diseases remain a significant global public health concern, imposing substantial health and economic burdens. The COVID-19 pandemic altered health care-seeking behaviors, infection control practices, and infectious disease epidemiology; however, its association with microbial foodborne pathogens remains incompletely characterized. OBJECTIVE: This single-center retrospective study aimed to analyze changes in bacterial and viral foodborne pathogen detection using clinical and etiological data from patients at an infectious diarrhea clinic in a tertiary Beijing hospital ove

Tobacco smoking and smokeless tobacco use among people living with HIV in Zambia: Findings from a 2023 National NCD/HIV Survey.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) who use tobacco face significant public health risks compared to non-users, including an average loss of 12.3 years of life expectancy. Tobacco use increases the likelihood of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and non-AIDS-related cancers. AIM: This study investigated factors associated with tobacco smoking and smokeless tobacco (SLT) use among PLWH in Zambia. METHODS: Data were obtained from a national cross-sectional survey involving 5,204 PLWH from 193 clinics across Zambia's 10 pro

Using Health Information Resources for People With Cognitive Impairment (digiDEM Bayern): Registry-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a growing global health challenge with significant economic and social implications. Underdiagnosis of dementia is prevalent due to a lack of knowledge and understanding among the general population. Enhancing dementia literacy through improved health information-seeking behavior is crucial for the self-determined management of the disease by those affected. Understanding the relationship between dementia literacy, health information-seeking behavior, and the use of various information sources among individuals with cognitive impairment is of high importance in this con
