Artificial rugby union playing surface installation is increasing. This prospective cohort study aimed to examine the effect of playing surface on match injury types within 157 players of two UK professional rugby union clubs playing 209 matches (96 on artificial surfaces and 113 on grass) over three seasons. There was no difference in overall injury risk between the two playing surfaces with injury incidence on artificial 80.2 (CI 69.9-91.7) and on grass 81.9 per 1000 match-hours (CI 72.2-92.5), with an incidence rate ratio (RR) of 0.98 (CI 0.82-1.17). Avascular necrosis with or without resultant limb-length discrepancy and problems with bony union is not uncommon after femoral neck fractures in the pediatric population. This rare case of infection after closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of an intracapsular fracture of the hip in a child illustrates the treatment difficulties posed by joint sepsis and the value of modern scanning techniques.

PURPOSE: To describe the level of usage of protective devices and equipment in a cohort of New Zealand rugby players.
METHODS: Male and female players (N = 327) from a range of competitive grades were followed over the course of the season. Participants were interviewed weekly about their participation in rugby and use of protective equipment. A direct blow to the leg resulted in fibular shaft fractures in three elite college athletes participating in contact sports. None of the athletes had prior symptoms suggestive of a stress fracture. All three athletes had benign-appearing fractures and were treated nonoperatively. Ultimate healing was delayed, occurring on average at 23 weeks, and each case was complicated by refracture. Fractures of the fibular shaft in athletes may require more aggressive treatment than other simple fractures to allow sufficient healing to withstand the rigors of athletics.
