Integrating Case Detection of Visceral Leishmaniasis and Other Febrile Illness with Vector Control in the Post-Elimination Phase in Nepal.

Nepal has completed the attack phase of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) elimination and now needs active case detection (ACD) and vector control methods that are suitable to the consolidation and maintenance phases. We evaluated different ACD approaches and vector control methods in Saptari district. We assessed 1) mobile teams deployed in villages with VL cases in 2015 to conduct combined camps for fever and skin lesions to detect VL/PKDL (post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis) and other infections; 2) an incentive approach by trained female community health volunteers (FCHVs) in villages with no V

Management of insecticide resistance in the major Aedes vectors of arboviruses: Advances and challenges.

BACKGROUND: The landscape of mosquito-borne disease risk has changed dramatically in recent decades, due to the emergence and reemergence of urban transmission cycles driven by invasive Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus. Insecticide resistance is already widespread in the yellow fever mosquito, Ae. Aegypti; is emerging in the Asian tiger mosquito Ae. Albopictus; and is now threatening the global fight against human arboviral diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika. Because the panel of insecticides available for public health is limited, it is of primary importance to prese

Controlling Malaria in Western Pacific with Mosquito Nets Treated with Pyrethroids in Village Communities, 1979-1999.

Insecticide-treated mosquito nets were first put to practical use in the Western Pacific Region. Less than a decade after conducting workshops and other promotional activities, millions of people were protected by 1989. This occurred before the availability of commercially produced pretreated nets and before global funding for mass net distribution. This paper describes the sequence of steps leading to regional control success. The beginning stages in 1979 recognized that treating torn mosquito nets was a viable control option. Basic net treatment procedures were established by 1983 and worksh

Correlations between household occupancy and malaria vector biting risk in rural Tanzanian villages: implications for high-resolution spatial targeting of control interventions.

BACKGROUND: Fine-scale targeting of interventions is increasingly important where epidemiological disease profiles depict high geographical stratifications. This study verified correlations between household biomass and mosquito house-entry using experimental hut studies, and then demonstrated how geographical foci of mosquito biting risk can be readily identified based on spatial distributions of household occupancies in villages. METHODS: A controlled 4 × 4 Latin square experiment was conducted in rural Tanzania, in which no, one, three or six adult male volunteers slept under intact bed ne

The First Confirmed Elimination of an Onchocerciasis Focus in Africa: Abu Hamed, Sudan.

Mass treatment with ivermectin for onchocerciasis was stopped in 2012 in Abu Hamed, an isolated focus on the River Nile in northern Sudan. A 3-year posttreatment surveillance (PTS) ensued, at the end of which an evaluation was conducted in 2015 following the current World Health Organization guidelines for verification of onchocerciasis elimination. Vector black flies were collected from sentinel breeding sites and finger-prick bloodspots were collected from children ≤ 10 years of age resident in 35 communities within the focus. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening of 19,191 flies from fo

Chitosan/interfering RNA nanoparticle mediated gene silencing in disease vector mosquito larvae.

Vector mosquitoes inflict more human suffering than any other organism-and kill more than one million people each year. The mosquito genome projects facilitated research in new facets of mosquito biology, including functional genetic studies in the primary African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and the dengue and yellow fever vector Aedes aegypti. RNA interference- (RNAi-) mediated gene silencing has been used to target genes of interest in both of these disease vector mosquito species. Here, we describe a procedure for preparation of chitosan/interfering RNA nanoparticles that are combined

Best-bet integrated strategies for containing drug-resistant trypanosomes in cattle.

BACKGROUND: African animal trypanosomosis is a major constraint to the rearing of productive livestock in the sub-humid Sudan-Sahel zone of West Africa where cotton is grown. Trypanosomosis is mainly controlled using trypanocidal drugs, but the effective use of drugs is threatened by the development of widespread resistance. This study tested integrated best-bet strategies for containment and/ or reversal of trypanocide resistance in villages in south-east Mali where resistance has been reported. METHODS: Four sentinel villages each from an intervention area (along the road from Mali to Burki

Malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion: heterogeneity and complexity.

The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), comprised of six countries including Cambodia, China's Yunnan Province, Lao PDR, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand and Vietnam, is one of the most threatening foci of malaria. Since the initiation of the WHO's Mekong Malaria Program a decade ago, malaria situation in the GMS has greatly improved, reflected in the continuous decline in annual malaria incidence and deaths. However, as many nations are moving towards malaria elimination, the GMS nations still face great challenges. Malaria epidemiology in this region exhibits enormous geographical heterogeneity with My

Restricted application of insecticides: a promising tsetse control technique, but what do the farmers think of it?

BACKGROUND: Restricted application of insecticides to cattle is a cheap and safe farmer-based method to control tsetse. In Western Africa, it is applied using a footbath, mainly to control nagana and the tick Amblyomma variegatum. In Eastern and Southern Africa, it might help controlling the human disease, i.e., Rhodesian sleeping sickness as well. The efficiency of this new control method against ticks, tsetse and trypanosomoses has been demonstrated earlier. The invention, co-built by researchers and farmers ten years ago, became an innovation in Burkina Faso through its diffusion by two dev

The finite element implementation of a K.P.P. equation for the simulation of tsetse control measures in the vicinity of a game reserve.

An equation, strongly reminiscent of Fisher's equation, is used to model the response of tsetse populations to proposed control measures in the vicinity of a game reserve. The model assumes movement is by diffusion and that growth is logistic. This logistic growth is dependent on an historical population, in contrast to Fisher's equation which bases it on the present population. The model therefore takes into account the fact that new additions to the adult fly population are, in actual fact, the descendents of a population which existed one puparial duration ago, furthermore, that this pupari

[Mosquito complex (Diptera, Culicidae) in a West Nile fever focus in the Volgograd region. I. Species diversity and relative abundance in different habitats].

Potential West Nile virus (WNV) vectors were assessed during 2003 and 2004 at the indoor and outdoor collection sites of Volgograd and surrounding rural areas. A total of 26 387 female mosquitoes comprising 16 species in 5 genera of the subfamily Culicinae and 4 species of the subfamily Anophelinae were collected. The seasonal abundance and the dominance structure greatly differed in the multi-storied buildings, farms, and open habitats whereas the similarity of species diversity remained high throughout the season. In the porches of buildings, Aedes vexans (58%) and Cx. pipiens (37%) prevaile

Waking up to sleeping sickness.

Devastating epidemics of human African trypanosomiasis are currently re-emerging in many sub-Saharan countries. In the past three decades, clinical research into this important disease has been neglected, as have urgently needed initiatives on drug development, disease surveillance and vector control. Recent impetus has aimed to provide a free supply of antitrypanosomal drugs, to develop a new orally active trypanocidal agent and to attack the tsetse vector with modern technology. In addition, pan-African initiatives to co-ordinate control efforts have begun. These all provide some hope for th

[The entomological and acarological situation in Nizhegorod Province].

Ixodes, persulcatus, I. ricinus, D. reticulatus, D. marginatus, H. concinna were recorded in different regional environmental regions. The northern districts of the region are endemic for tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Ixodes tick-borne borreliosis (ITBB). The infection of ticks with TBE virus is 0.25%, that with Borrelia is 10.3% of the total number of the examinees. In 1997 TBE and TTBB morbidity rates were 1.91 and 2.0 per 100,000, respectively. Data on the phenology of prevailing Anopheles messeae are given. Human malaria contamination may take 99-102 days (the first ten days of June to

Control of tsetse and trypanosomiasis transmission in Uganda by applications of lambda-cyhalothrin.

The pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin was evaluated in field trials against Glossina f.fuscipes and sleeping sickness transmission in Iyolwa sub-county, Tororo District, Uganda. The insecticide was applied selectively to the resting-sites of tsetse, by bush-spraying, using 10% wettable powder (10WP) formulation at an application rate of 11.6 g a.i./ha over an area of 28 km2, or by a 2% Electrodyn formulation (2ED) applied at 0.9 g a.i./ha over 30 km2. In a third trial area of 32 km2, 215 pyramidal traps treated with lambda-cyhalothrin 100 mg/m2 were set. The best impact was obtained wi

Bancroftian filariasis in Pondicherry, south India: 2. Epidemiological evaluation of the effect of vector control.

This article examines the evaluation of a bancroftian filariasis control programme undertaken in Pondicherry from 1981-5. Integrated vector management was applied in one half of the town, and routine operations under the national programme (larviciding and chemotherapy) continued in the comparison area. The programme was evaluated by monitoring relative change in the epidemiological statistics of both populations. The results indicate that there was significant reduction in prevalence of microfilaraemia in juveniles in the controlled area. An apparent reduction in intensity of microfilaraemia
