ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Malaria is a significant global health issue, made worse by the growing resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to current antimalarial drugs. This highlights the need for new, safe, and multi-target therapeutic agents. Solanum nigrum L., a wild vegetable used in traditional herbal medicine in Cameroon, helps treat several ailments, including some cancers, urinary issues, malaria, fever, and joint pain. However, we have not studied this plant in depth to identify its potential antimalarial extracts and compounds or understand their action mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a globally prevalent parasite that poses significant medical and veterinary challenges. Although current therapies such as pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine are effective, they often cause severe adverse effects, including myelosuppression, highlighting the need for safer and more effective alternatives. In this study, we evaluated the immunostimulatory and antiparasitic activities of three traditional herbal extracts, Stellaria dichotoma L. var. lanceolata Bge. (LDS), Stellaria aquaatic (SA) and Gypsophila oldhamiana (GO), in a murine model of T. go

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) remains a major health threat with limited therapeutic options. We identified cucurbitacin B (CuB), a plant-derived triterpenoid, as a concurrent, complementary adjunct that attenuates bacterial virulence while modulating host responses. Structure-guided docking together with electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) and lysate-based cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA) supported the engagement of the Staphylococcus exoprotein expression protein response regulator (SaeR) at the α4/β5 pocket, lowering SaeR-regulated toxins and immune response

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, poses a severe threat to global shrimp aquaculture. Reduced susceptibility of aquaculture-associated bacterial pathogens to conventional antibiotics, together with concerns regarding antimicrobial input and environmental exposure, highlights the need for dose-sparing therapeutic strategies. This study investigated the antibiotic-potentiating activity of honokiol (HKL), a plant-derived lignan, in combination with sulfamonomethoxine sodium (SMM-Na) against AHPND. Checkerboard and time-kill assays demonstrated tha

Vitamins are essential compounds obtained through diet that are necessary for normal development and function in an organism. One of the most important vitamins for human physiology is vitamin A, a group of retinoid compounds and carotenoids, which generally function as a mediator for cell growth, differentiation, immunity, and embryonic development, as well as serving as a key component in the phototransduction cycle in the vertebrate retina. For humans, vitamin A is obtained through the diet, where provitamin A carotenoids such as β-carotene from plants or preformed vitamin A such as retinyl

The pink-pigmented facultative methylotrophs (PPFMs), a major bacterial group found in the plant phyllosphere, comprise two genera: Methylobacterium and Methylorubrum. They have been separated into three major clades: A, B (Methylorubrum), and C. Within these genera, however, some species lack either pigmentation or methylotrophy, which raises the question of what actually defines the PPFMs. The present study employed a comprehensive comparative genomics approach to reveal the phylogenetic relationship among the PPFMs and to explain the genotypic differences that confer their different phenoty

Depression is broadly acclaimed as a mental health anomaly and despite advancements in the development of antidepressant drugs, they are linked with side effects. Dietary modifications and medicinal plants like olives can be used as effective strategies due to their antioxidant, immune-modulatory, antiinflammatory, and anticonvulsant properties. Considering the compositional alterations in olive fruits during ripening, the antidepressant potential of olive fruits at different degrees of ripeness, that is, un-ripened (green) and ripened (black) was investigated. Rats were randomly divided into

COVID-19 due to the SARS-CoV-2 infection is a multi-systemic immune syndrome affecting mainly the lungs, oropharyngeal region, and other vascular endothelial beds. There are tremendous ongoing efforts for the aim of developing drugs against the COVID-19 syndrome-associated inflammation. However, currently no specific medicine is present for the absolute pharmacological cure of COVID-19 mucositis. The re-purposing/re-positioning of already existing drugs is a very important strategy for the management of ongoing pandemy since the development of a new drug needs decades. Apart from altering angi

This article involved a broad search of applied sciences for milestone technologies we deem to be the most significant innovations applied by the North American pork industry, during the past 10 to 12 years. Several innovations shifted the trajectory of improvement or resolved significant production limitations. Each is being integrated into practice, with the exception being gene editing technology, which is undergoing the federal approval process. Advances in molecular genomics have been applied to gene editing for control of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome and to identify pigl
