Gastrointestinal nematode parasites of grazing ruminants: a comprehensive literature review of diagnostic methods for quantifying parasitism, larval differentiation and measuring anthelmintic resistance.

This review summarises up-to-date research on the diagnosis of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in livestock and anthelmintic resistance in GIN. It was commissioned to assist funding bodies to prioritise and guide research and extension efforts to improve the health, welfare and productivity of grazing ruminants in the face of challenge with GIN. A comprehensive review of published articles from journals, books and websites was undertaken, with a focus on peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2024 involving genera of GIN in grazing sheep and cattle with economic importance

Public support for reinvesting resources from enforcing drug possession to health-promoting alternatives: A nationally representative poll of adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The legal enforcement of drug possession is associated with a host of negative consequences for people who use drugs (PWUD), has demonstrated little effectiveness at curbing drug use, and has contributed to lasting financial, social, and health-related racial disparities in Black and Brown communities in the United States (U.S.). One policy alternative is reinvesting resources typically used for enforcing drug possession into health-promoting services such as drug treatment or harm reduction that can better serve the needs of PWUD than the criminal legal system. We sought to charac

Taking the Pulse of Resilience in Conserving Seagrass Meadows.

Foundational habitats such as seagrasses and coral reefs are at severe risk globally from climate warming. Infectious disease associated with warming events is both a cause of decline and an indicator of stress in both habitats. Since new approaches are needed to detect refugia and design climate-smart networks of marine protected areas, we test the hypothesis that the health of eelgrass (Zostera marina) in temperate ecosystems can serve as a proxy indicative of higher resilience and help pinpoint refugia. Eelgrass meadows worldwide are at risk from environmental stressors, including climate w

Pest categorisation of Matsucoccus matsumurae.

The EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a pest categorisation of Matsucoccus matsumurae (Hemiptera: Matsucoccidae), the Massonian pine bast scale, for the EU territory. This pest categorisation was initiated following the commodity risk assessment of artificially dwarfed plants from China consisting of Pinus parviflora (Japanese white pine) grafted on P. thunbergii (Japanese black pine) performed by EFSA, in which M. matsumurae was identified as a pest of possible concern. However, its identity is not firmly established due to uncertainty regarding its taxonomic relationship with Matsucoccus

Impact of exposure to extreme heat events during pregnancy on the incidence of congenital heart disease in offspring: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of congenital heart disease (CHD) is multifactorial. Environmental risk factors have emerged as an important modifiable determinant of several congenital cardiac conditions. Previous studies have shown a strong relationship between CHD and air pollution. Much less is known about the influence of ambient temperature on CHD. The primary objective of this meta-analysis was to examine the association between exposure to extreme heat events (EHE) during pregnancy and CHD in the offspring. METHODS: comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases su

Bacterial outer membrane vesicles bound to bacteriophages modulate neutrophil responses to bacterial infection.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major human pathogen, particularly effective at colonizing the airways of patients with cystic fibrosis. Bacteriophages are highly abundant at infection sites, but their impact on mammalian immunity remains unclear. We previously showed that Pf4, a temperate filamentous bacteriophage produced by P. aeruginosa, modifies the innate immune response to P. aeruginosa infections via TLR3 signaling, but the underlying mechanisms remained unclear. Notably, Pf4 is a single-stranded DNA and lysogenic phage, and its production does not typically result in lysis of its bacteria

Integration of ITS-2 rDNA nemabiome metabarcoding with Fecal Egg Count Reduction Testing (FECRT) reveals ivermectin resistance in multiple gastrointestinal nematode species, including hypobiotic Ostertagia ostertagi, in western Canadian beef cattle.

A large-scale Fecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) was integrated with ITS-2 rDNA nemabiome metabarcoding to investigate anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites in western Canadian beef cattle. The study was designed to detect anthelmintic resistance with the low fecal egg counts that typically occur in cattle in northern temperate regions. Two hundred and thirty-four auction market-derived, fall-weaned steer calves coming off pasture were randomized into three groups in feedlot pens: an untreated control group, an injectable ivermectin treatment group, and an in

The increase in core body temperature in response to exertional-heat stress can predict exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome.

Utilizing metadata from existing exertional and exertional-heat stress studies, the study aimed to determine if the exercise-associated increase in core body temperature can predict the change in exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome (EIGS) biomarkers and exercise-associated gastrointestinal symptoms (Ex-GIS). Endurance-trained individuals completed 2 h of running exercise in temperate (21.2-30.0°C) to hot (35.0-37.2°C) ambient conditions (n = 132 trials). Blood samples were collected pre- and post-exercise to determine the change in gastrointestinal integrity biomarkers and systemic infl

Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery Evacuation of Retained Hemothorax; Timing May Not Increase Thoracoscopic Failure.

INTRODUCTION: Current guidelines for retained hemothorax (rHTX) in trauma patients recommend video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) within 4 days. However, this recommendation is currently based upon evidence from small observational studies. The aim of this study is to further evaluate the association between timing of VATS and clinical outcomes in rHTX following trauma. METHODS: Using the 2017-2019 Trauma Quality Improvement Program database, adult (≥15 years-old) trauma patients with rHTX who underwent evacuation of rHTX through VATS were included. Multivariable linear and logistic regress

Early delivery following chronic and acute ambient temperature exposure: a comprehensive survival approach.

BACKGROUND: Ambient temperature, particularly heat, is increasingly acknowledged as a trigger for preterm delivery but study designs have been limited and results mixed. We aimed to comprehensively evaluate the association between ambient temperature throughout pregnancy and preterm delivery. METHODS: We estimated daily temperature throughout pregnancy using a cutting-edge spatiotemporal model for 5347 live singleton births from three prospective cohorts in France, 2002-2018. We performed Cox regression (survival analysis) with distributed lags to evaluate time-varying associations with prete

Epidemiological characteristics, spatial clusters and monthly incidence prediction of hand, foot and mouth disease from 2017 to 2022 in Shanxi Province, China.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infection in the world, and its epidemics result in heavy disease burdens. Over the past decade, HFMD has been widespread among children in China, with Shanxi Province being a severely affected northern province. Located in the temperate monsoon climate, Shanxi has a GDP of over 2.5 trillion yuan. It is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the basic features of HFMD in those areas that have similar meteorological and economic backgrounds to northern China. We aimed to investigate epidemiological characteristics, identify spatial clu

Human IgG responses to the Aedes albopictus 34k2 salivary protein: analyses in Réunion Island and Bolivia confirm its suitability as marker of host exposure to the tiger mosquito.

BACKGROUND: The rapid worldwide spreading of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus is expanding the risk of arboviral diseases transmission, pointing out the urgent need to improve monitoring and control of mosquito vector populations. Assessment of human-vector contact, currently estimated by classical entomological methods, is crucial to guide planning and implementation of control measures and evaluate transmission risk. Antibody responses to mosquito genus-specific salivary proteins are emerging as a convenient complementary tool for assessing host exposure to vectors. We previously showed th

Optical and molecular indices of dissolved organic matter for estimating biodegradability and resulting carbon dioxide production in inland waters: A review.

Biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) constitutes the most labile fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which also functions as a source of CO2 emissions from inland waters. However, no systematic review is available on DOM indicators of BDOC and CO2 production potential. Optical and molecular indices can be used to track small changes in DOM composition during biodegradation. In this review, we identified four different methods for measuring BDOC together with their strengths and limitations. In addition, we discuss the potential of using documented optical indices based on abso

Wildlife roadkill in the Tsavo Ecosystem, Kenya: identifying hotspots, potential drivers, and affected species.

Roadkill is one of the highest causes of wildlife mortality and is of global conservation concern. Most roadkill studies have focused on wildlife in developed countries such as the United States of America and temperate biomes, but there are limited data for the impacts of roads on wildlife in the African tropics, where road infrastructure development is projected to grow rapidly in natural environments and conservation areas. The Tsavo Conservation Area is an important biodiversity hotspot in eastern Kenya and is bisected by a major highway and railways that connect the port of Mombasa to the

Hydrologic flushing rates drive nitrogen cycling and plant invasion in a freshwater coastal wetland model.

Coastal wetlands intercept significant amounts of nitrogen (N) from watersheds, especially when surrounding land cover is dominated by agriculture and urban development. Through plant uptake, soil immobilization, and denitrification, wetlands can remove excess N from flow-through water sources and mitigate eutrophication of connected aquatic ecosystems. Excess N can also change plant community composition in wetlands, including communities threatened by invasive species. Understanding how variable hydrology and N loading impact wetland N removal and community composition can help attain desire
