This study was carried out to clarify the diagnostic usefulness of the skin tests of purified protein derivatives from M. intracellulare (PPD-B) and M. tuberculosis (PPDs). We describe a patient in whom two tuberculids, lichen scrofulosorum, and erythema induratum occurred simultaneously. The clinical and histopathologic features were characteristic and a Mantoux test showed a positive reaction. There was no extracutaneous focus of tuberculosis. Polymerase chain reaction for mycobacteria in the skin lesions was negative, but her lesions responded rapidly to antituberculous chemotherapy.

A review of the clinical records of all patients with the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis, admitted to the Ethio-Swedish Children's Hospital (ESCH), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, over a ten year period was made. There were 57 patients that fulfilled the inclusion criteria, accounting for 0.22% of all admissions. Both sexes were nearly equally affected. An atypical strain Mycobacterium habana has been studied for its antigenic cross reactivity with delayed type of hypersensitivity responses in guinea pigs. Guinea pigs sensitized with M. habana, M. leprae and M. tuberculosis when challenged with habanin, lepromin and tuberculin in criss-cross fashion have demonstrated strong cross reactivity with each other. Possibilities of developing M. habana as a vaccine against tuberculosis and/or leprosy has been discussed.

The value of the beryllium macrophage migration inhibition (Be MIF) and Mantoux tests in the diagnosis of chronic beryllium disease and in the detection of hypersensitivity in healthy beryllium workers is demonstrated. This investigation was carried out to study possible differences in cell-mediated hypersensitivity between symptomatic and asymptomatic pigeon breeders. A variety of pigeon antigens were investigated using the indirect migration inhibition test. Cell-mediated hypersensitivity to pigeon antigens was detected in 6 of 8 symptomatic pigeon breeders, and in only 2 of 12 asymptomatic pigeon breeders. The results suggest that cellular mechanisms may be important in the pathogenesis of pigeon breeder's disease.
