PURPOSE: We prospectively compared buccal mucosa graft and lingual mucosa graft urethroplasty with respect to donor site morbidity and urethroplasty outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients treated with buccal mucosa graft (29) or lingual mucosa graft (29) urethroplasty were included in the study. Oral pain and morbidity were assessed using the numeric rating scale (scale 0 to 10) as well as an in-home questionnaire administered 3 days, 2 weeks and 6 months postoperatively.

We have reviewed the complications and follow-up in 6 patients who underwent kidney transplantation with cutaneous ureterostomy. Four patients had tuberculosis, 1 myelomeningocele and another congenital stenosis of the posterior urethra. A series of 54 men, 25 with acute urinary retention and 29 with cytometrically proven bladder outflow obstruction (BOO), underwent dilatation of the prostatic urethra using a 35 mm fixed diameter, low compliance balloon. In 42 patients this was performed under cystoscopic guidance and in 12 patients under fluoroscopic control. For 16 years we have used segmental urethrectomy with end-to-end urethrorrhaphy for treatment of traumatic urethral lesions, in preference to two-stage urethroplasties. The approach has been transperineal, retropubic, and if necessary transpubic. Good results in 41 cases with long-term follow-up allow us to say that this is a good operation. It provides in two thirds of the patients a correct and stable urethral stream, complete bladder emptying, and does not affect urinary control or sexual function if this was normal following the injury.
