Previous immunological studies indicated that the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, expresses Erp outer surface proteins during mammalian infection. We conducted analyses of Erp expression throughout the entire tick-mammal infectious cycle, which revealed that the bacteria regulate Erp production in vivo. Bacteria within unfed nymphal ticks expressed little to no Erp proteins. However, as infected ticks fed on mice, B. burgdorferi increased production of Erp proteins, with essentially all transmitted bacteria expressing these proteins. Mice infected with B. burgdorferi mounted rap

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS; also nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome [NBCCS]; Gorlin's syndrome) is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, keratocysts, and developmental skeletal defects. Mutation of the human homologue of Drosophila patched (PTC) gene is considered to be the molecular defect in BCNS. PTC mutations have been observed in sporadic tumors including basal cell and ovarian carcinomas and medulloblastoma. The authors report a novel C/T polymorphism in the PTC gene. Forty-eight normal blood samples were screened for the presence of the p

The consumption of palm weevil larvae (Rhynchophorus phoenicis), a traditional edible insect in Ghana, is on the rise; nevertheless, comprehensive data are scarce regarding the impact of culinary processing on its nutritional profile and safety. This research assessed the proximate composition, mineral content, chemical safety (heavy metals), health risk, microbiological quality, and physicochemical properties of fresh, boiled, fried, and roasted R. phoenicis larvae. The proximate composition was analyzed using AOAC methods, essential and harmful metals were measured through AAS and ICP-MS, mi

Body size is a critical trait shaping ectotherm thermal tolerance, yet how body size mediates thermal acclimation remains poorly understood in insects. Here, we conducted 15-day daily cold (9 °C, 2.5 h) and heat (30 °C, 2.5 h) acclimation treatments on large, medium, and small Solenopsis invicta workers, followed by extreme temperature survival assays and comparative RNA-seq transcriptome profiling to uncover size-dependent acclimation phenotypes and molecular regulatory pathways. Survival results revealed that both cold and heat acclimation significantly boosted extreme thermal resistance of

INTRODUCTION: Chitin is a highly abundant polysaccharide in nature and is linked to immune recognition of fungal infections and asthma in humans. Ubiquitous in fungi and insects, chitin is absent inmammals and plants and, thus, represents a microbeassociatedmolecular pattern (MAMP). However, highly polymeric chitin is insoluble, which potentially hampers recognition by host immune sensors. In plants, secreted chitinases degrade polymeric chitin into diffusible oligomers, which are "fed to" innate immune receptors and co-receptors. In human and murine immune cells, a similar enzymatic activity

UNLABELLED: Canine distemper virus (CDV) poses a severe threat to both domesticated and wild animals, including multiple carnivores. With the continued expansion of its host range, there is an urgent need for the development of a safer and more effective vaccine. In this study, we developed subunit vaccines based on a bacterium-like particle (BLP) delivery platform containing BLPs-F and BLPs-H, which display the CDV F and H glycoprotein antigens, respectively, using the antigen-protein anchor fusions produced by a recombinant baculovirus insect cell expression system. The combination of BLPs-F

The genus Streptomyces is renowned not only for its natural antibiotic production but also for its abundant chitinolytic enzymes, which break down stubborn chitin into chitooligosaccharides. Despite this, there have been limited studies utilizing whole-genome sequencing to explore the repertoire of chitin degradation and utilization genes in Streptomyces. A particularly compelling source of novel antimicrobials and enzymes lies in the microbiota of insects, where bacterial symbionts produce antimicrobials to protect against opportunistic pathogens and enzymes to adapt to the environment. BACKGROUND: Mosquito borne viruses, such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever and Chikungunya, cause millions of infections every year. These viruses are mostly transmitted by two urban-adapted mosquito species, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Although mechanistic understanding remains largely unknown, Aedes mosquitoes may have unique adaptations that lower the impact of viral infection. Recently, we reported the identification of an Aedes specific double-stranded RNA binding protein (dsRBP), named Loqs2, that is involved in the control of infection by dengue and Zika viruses in mosquitoes. Flupyradifurone (FPF), a novel butenolide insecticide binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), has been shown to be less acutely toxic to western honey bees (Apis mellifera) than other insecticides such as neonicotinoids sharing the same target-site. A previous study revealed that this is due to enhanced oxidative metabolism of FPF, mediated by three cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s), including CYP6AQ1. Therefore, we followed a toxicogenomics approach and investigated the potential role of functional CYP6AQ1 orthologs in FPF metabolism from eight different bee species, inclu

In insects, the biogenic amines octopamine (OA) and tyramine (TA) are involved in controlling several physiological and behavioural processes. OA and TA act as neurotransmitters, neuromodulators or neurohormones, performing their functions by binding to specific receptors belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. OA and TA along with their receptors are involved in reproduction, smell perception, metabolism, and homeostasis. Moreover, OA and TA receptors are targets for insecticides and antiparasitic agents, such as the formamidine Amitraz. In the dengue and yellow fever

Fipronil (FIP) is a phenylpyrazole insecticide that is commonly used in agricultural and veterinary fields for controlling a wide range of insects, but it is a strong environmentally toxic substance. Exposure to FIP has been reported to increase the hepatic fat accumulation through altered lipid metabolism, which ultimately can contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) development. The present study aimed to examine the function of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) in protecting against hepatotoxicity and lipogenesis induced by FIP. Twenty-eight male albino rats were classified i

Shuni virus (SHUV), an insect-transmitted orthobunyavirus of the Simbu serogroup within the family Peribunyaviridae, may induce severe congenital malformations when naïve ruminants are infected during gestation. Only recently, another clinical presentation in cattle, namely neurological disease after postnatal infection, was reported. To characterize the course of the disease under experimental conditions and to confirm a causal relationship between the virus and the neurological disorders observed in the field, six calves each were experimentally inoculated (subcutaneously) with two different

Interleukin (IL) -12 is a heterodimeric cytokine mainly produced by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells in mammals. IL-12p70 composed of IL-12p35 and IL-12p40, is known to play a crucial role in promoting cell-mediated immunity (CMI) through Th1 differentiation and IFN-γ production. Although two types of IL-12p35 (p35a, p35b) and three types of IL-12p40 (p40a, p40b and p40c) have been identified in several fish species, the knowledge on functional characteristics of teleost IL-12 is still limited. In the present study, we cloned two types of IL-12p35 and three types of IL-12p40 genes i

The type III secretion system (T3SS) is an extracellular apparatus used by many Gram-negative bacteria to deliver effector proteins directly into plant and animal cells, thereby facilitating host-specific association. Strains of the enterobacterial genus, Pantoea, have been isolated from a wide variety of hosts, including plants, insects, and humans, yet it is unclear whether the T3SS may be involved in these associations. In this study, we use comparative genomics and phylogenetic methods to examine the origin and distribution of T3SSs in 35 sequenced environmental and clinical strains of Pan

Mosquitoes are blood-feeding insects serving as the most important vectors for spreading human pathogens and parasites. Dengue is a viral disease mainly vectored through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. Its transmission has recently increased in urban and semi-urban areas of tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, becoming a major international public health concern. There is no specific treatment for dengue. Its prevention and control solely depend on effective vector control measures. Mangrove plants have been used in Indian traditional medicine for a wide array of purposes. In this researc

In the majority of cervical cancers, DNAs of high-risk mucosotpropic human papillomaviruses (HPVs), such as type 16, are maintained so as to express two viral proteins, E6 and E7, suggesting an essential importance to carcinogenesis. The high-risk HPV E6 proteins are known to inactivate p53 tumor suppressor protein but appear to have an additional, molecularly unknown function(s). In this study, we demonstrate that these E6 proteins can bind to the second PDZ domain of the human homologue of the Drosophila discs large tumor suppressor protein (hDLG) through their C-terminal XS/TXV/L (where X r
