Current management of cervical esophageal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Pharyngo-laryngo-esophagectomy (PLE) has been regarded as a standard treatment for cervical esophageal cancer, but the morbidity and mortality rates associated with PLE are substantial. Chemoradiation (CTRT) is widely used to treat esophageal cancer; however, its role in managing cervical esophageal cancer has not been fully elucidated. It was hypothesized that up-front CTRT could be an effective alternative treatment option to PLE. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of patients with cervical esophageal cancer treated with these two methods. METHODS: Patients wi

Combined surgery and radiotherapy as curative treatment for tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma: a case report.

BackgroundAdenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea is a rare tumor, characterized by slow growth and low rate of local and distant metastasis. When achievable, complete surgical resection represents the optimal treatment approach, with the highest results in terms of overall survival. Radiation therapy is a reasonable alternative in cases of inoperable disease.Case presentationWe report a case of an 82-year-old white man affected by primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea, treated with debulking surgery and radiotherapy on the residual disease. A three-dimensional conformal radiation th

Longitudinal Swallowing and Salivary Changes With CLR 131 and Re-Irradiation in Recurrent Head and Neck Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with recurrent head and neck cancer (HNC) often present with severe, persistent dysphagia and xerostomia following prior chemoradiation. Although swallowing impairments and salivary dysfunction have been reported in this population, prior longitudinal studies have not examined changes in salivary composition or how these changes relate to swallowing physiology. PURPOSE: This study characterized longitudinal changes in swallowing and salivary function-including composition-following treatment with CLR 131, a novel tumor-selective radiotherapeutic, combined with external be

Carotid artery pseudoaneurysm as a rare sequela of surgery for laryngeal cancer.

Formation of carotid artery pseudoaneurysm is uncommon after intensive treatment for head and neck cancer. We encountered a case of postoperative formation of pseudoaneurysm at the left carotid bifurcation in a diabetic man. The risk factors for carotid artery pseudoaneurysm in the patient included diabetes mellitus, previous radiotherapy to the neck, neck dissection, and postoperative Staphylococcus aureus infection secondary to accidental pharyngocutaneous fistula. We successfully obliterated this pseudoaneurysm using a Smart stent and detachable coils without neurological deficits. The poss

T1 squamous cell carcinoma of the arytenoid.

Twenty-two cases of early squamous cell carcinoma of the arytenoid cartilage staged as T1 according to the 1983 American Joint Committee for Cancer Staging Classification system were reviewed. Eighteen percent of the patients showed no symptoms. In the remaining 82%, the main presenting symptom was pain in the form of sore throat, odynophagia, or otalgia. Radiotherapy and partial laryngeal surgery were the options retained for the treatment of the larynx. A "watch and wait" policy or preventive treatment of the ipsilateral jugulocarotid lymph nodes were the treatment options retained for the n

A Review of Clinical Practice Guidelines and Treatment Recommendations for Cancer Care in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has inevitably caused those involved in cancer care to change clinical practice in order to minimize the risk of infection while maintaining cancer treatment as a priority. General advice during the pandemic suggests that most patients continue with ongoing therapies or planned surgeries, while follow-up visits may instead be delayed until the resolution of the outbreak. We conducted a literature search using PubMed to identify articles published in English language that reported on care recommendations for cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic from its inception u

Aberrant methylation‑mediated decrease of lncRNA HNF1A‑AS1 contributes to malignant progression of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma via EMT.

Aberrant methylation is one of the most frequent epigenetic alterations that regulate the expression levels of genes, including long non‑coding RNAs (lncRNAs), in tumors. However, to the best of our knowledge, the expression and function of hepatic nuclear factor 1α antisense RNA 1 (HNF1A‑AS1) and its methylation condition have not yet been reported in the development and progression of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). In the present study, the expression and methylation of HNF1A‑AS1 were first examined by reverse transcription‑quantitative PCR, bisulfite genomic sequencing and methyl

[Transoral laser microsurgery in advanced carcinomas of larynx and pharynx].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: There are several types of treatment for advanced squamous cell carcinomas of the pharynx and larynx. However, both open surgery and chemoradiation protocols have failed to improve control and survival. There is a tendency toward conservative treatment without worsening oncological outcomes. The objective of this study was to describe the effectiveness of organ-preserving CO₂ laser microsurgery for treating advanced carcinomas of the larynx and pharynx. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective review of 63 patients undergoing CO₂ laser microsurgery for the treatment o

RP11‑156L14.1 regulates SSR1 expression by competitively binding to miR‑548ao‑3p in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Emerging studies have demonstrated that long non‑coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play essential roles in tumorigenesis. However, the role and function of lncRNAs in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC) have not been completely elucidated. The present study explored the function of a novel lncRNA, RP11‑156L14.1, in HSCC. RP11‑156L14.1 was revealed to be highly expressed in HSCC tissues and cell lines. Knockdown of RP11‑156L14.1 inhibited proliferation, migration, and invasion in HSCC cells. Furthermore, RP11‑156L14.1 regulated epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT) by controlling EMT‑related pr
