Tamm Plasmon Resonance Responsiveness to SARS-CoV-2 Virus-Like Particles.

Bioresponsive optical materials that convert nanoscale biointerface events into measurable spectral signals are of growing interest for sensing and antiviral applications. Here, we show that a Tamm plasmon (TP) device, consisting of a SiO2/TiO2 distributed Bragg reflector capped with nanostructured silver, responds to SARS-CoV-2 virus-like particles (VLPs) in a concentration-dependent manner without selective functionalization. Upon VLP exposure, the conventional wavelength shift (Δλ) of the TP resonance is small (∼4 nm), whereas the resonance depth decreases systematically, by about 60% at 10

Experimental demonstration for precisely tuning the focal length of finite-aperture focused beams and vortices.

High-frequency focused ultrasound is widely used in biomedical applications such as high-resolution imaging, neuromodulation, and particle manipulation. However, dynamic tuning of the focal plane in conventional systems often relies on mechanically adjustable components or array-based control with high cost. In this work, an optically transparent, planar compact piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer was designed and fabricated by encoding phase profile corresponding to an ideal converging spherical wave onto a planar aperture, thereby generating focused fields while maintaining compatibility wit

Quantum noise spectroscopy of nanoscale charge defects in silicon carbide at room temperature.

The nanoscale charge environment critically influences the performance of semiconductor devices, yet traditional characterization techniques usually lack the spatial resolution to resolve nanoscale charge heterogeneity and identify microscopic noise sources. Here, we address this critical gap using individual PL5 color centers in commercial silicon carbide as room-temperature, broadband (near-dc to gigahertz) quantum spectrometers. We report real-time, nanoscale observation of single-charge tunneling dynamics at room temperature in 4H-SiC by monitoring the random telegraph noise using opticall

Strain-localized luminescent e-skin for high-resolution pressure mapping and visual force feedback.

Electronic skins (e-skins) that emulate human intuitive tactile perception with visual feedback capabilities are vital for next-generation wearables, robotics, and biomedical applications. However, existing visualized pressure mapping systems either require dense pixelated arrays that add bulk, complexity and signal crosstalk, or rely on rigid or semi‑rigid architecture,  and are not able to conform to dynamically changing curved, soft surfaces. Here, we report a soft mechano-electroluminescent e-skin for high-resolution visualized pressure mapping. Quantitative pressure sensing is achieved on

Unveiling Anisotropic in-Plane Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Expansion Coefficient in Low-Symmetry Few-Layer ReS2.

ReS2 belongs to a unique class of 2D materials with low structural symmetry and extremely weak interlayer bonding, which give rise to intriguing thermal properties, like in-plane anisotropic thermal conductivity (ATC) and anisotropic thermal expansion coefficient (ATEC). This study provides experimental evidence of in-plane ATC and ATEC in few-layer ReS2, revealed through simultaneous two-mode Raman thermometry. In a single optical configuration, ATC of ReS2 has been determined by simultaneous analysis of two anisotropic Raman modes (III and V) corresponding to in-plane crystallographic axes.

Investigation of precise particle manipulation using zeroth- and first-order acoustic Bessel fields.

Acoustic tweezers enable non-contact manipulation across a wide range of biomedical applications. In this work, an in-plane circular array acoustic tweezer device operating at 2.3 MHz is used to manipulate 90 μm polystyrene particles, which have higher density and stiffness than the surrounding water, under both focal-point (zeroth-order Bessel function shape) and vortex-trap (first-order Bessel function shape) fields. It is shown that when such fields are used for manipulation, significant positioning errors can occur. The vortex-trap field creates a convergent trap at its core, yet position

High-quality Janus MoSSe and WSSe monolayers enabled by hBN-supported chalcogen substitution.

Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers offer distinctive physical properties and device applications because their broken out-of-plane mirror symmetry induces an intrinsic out-of-plane dipole. High crystal quality is essential for accessing their intrinsic excitonic physics, yet improving Janus TMD quality remains challenging due to structural degradation and strain introduced during chalcogen substitution. To address this challenge, we develop a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-supported chalcogen substitution process that yields crack-free Janus TMD monolayers with improved opti

Metal Ion-Engineered Carbon Quantum Dots From Hazelnut Shell via Solid-State Synthesis for Efficient OLED Devices.

In this study, we report a scalable and green solid-state synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from hazelnut shell biomass, using citric acid and urea as carbon and nitrogen sources. Controlled BaCl2 and ZnCl2 doping was applied to tailor nucleation, crystallinity, and surface chemistry. Structural analyses (FTIR, XRD, STEM, XPS, and DLS) revealed that BaCl2-assisted CQDs exhibited higher graphitization, narrower size distribution (7-13 nm), and fewer defects, while ZnCl2-assisted CQDs showed more amorphous and heteroatom-rich surfaces. Optical measurements indicated strong π

From prerogative instances to histological thinking: a Baconian pedagogy of observation.

This paper reinterprets Francis Bacon's Novum Organum as a framework for understanding the visual epistemology of histology. Histology, founded in the nineteenth century as the microscopic study of tissues, is not merely a classificatory science but a visual discipline-one that trains observers to 'see through' the body's surfaces to discern hidden organisation, depth and transition. Bacon's notion of prerogative instances-crucial, solitary, processual, comparative and instances of power-maps closely onto the interpretive acts that define microscopic observation: isolating decisive cases, iden

Autonomous robotic alignment and dynamic illumination control of an ophthalmic slit lamp for in vivo anterior segment imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE: The slit lamp is the gold standard ophthalmic instrument for examining the anterior segment of the eye. Slit lamps require the mechanical stabilization of patients to facilitate alignment and a specialized technician to operate. The growing demand for ophthalmic care and shortages of specialists highlight the need for alternative diagnostic technologies. AIM: We demonstrate an autonomously aligning, contactless slit lamp enabled by a vision-guided robot to acquire anterior segment images without mechanical patient stabilization. APPROACH: We integrate three subsystems mounted t

Management of intracranial hypertension with and without invasive intracranial pressure monitoring.

Management of intracranial hypertension (IH) has improved in the last decades driven by advancements in monitoring technologies and a deeper understanding of its pathophysiology. Although intracranial pressure (ICP) catheters are still recommended by current guidelines for monitoring patients at risk of IH, these methods are not without limitations. Challenges include procedural complications, availability of these devices in many healthcare settings and technical issues. In this context, management in the absence of ICP monitoring is common and now it can be augmented by intensivist-led point

The unpredictable resorption of bioresorbable scaffolds-A tale of two ABSORBs.

Bioresorbable stents represent a revolutionary treatment for coronary artery disease. Such a device offers the prospect for complete naturalization of artery lumen after strut resorption and restoration of vasomotion while curtailing the duration of dual anti-platelet therapy. The prototype bioresorbable scaffold (BRS-ABSORB GT1) demonstrated good feasibility and safety in the initial studies compared to metallic drug eluting stent but later fell out of favor due to multiple report of stent thrombosis and target lesion failure. Unpredictable resorption of struts turned out to be one of the "Ac

Acid-base equilibrium in non-aqueous medium: colorimetric visualization, estimation of acidity constants and construction of molecular logic gates.

A reversible acid-base probe, (N1E, N4E)-N1, N4-bis((Z)-3-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)allylidene)benzene-1,4-diamine (MM1), is introduced for the colorimetric visualization of acid-base equilibria in non-aqueous media. MM1 displays reversible acidochromic behavior, showing exciting colorimetric change varying from weak to strong acid. Also, we have fabricated a colorimetric paper strip-based test kit to visualize acid-base equilibria. A dipstick experiment has been demonstrated to visualize the acid-base equilibria in the gaseous state. This acid-base probe has also been employed to estimate the
