CT Evaluation of intraparenchymal chest tube placement and other malpositions: A pictorial review.

Tube thoracostomy is a ubiquitous procedure in trauma and critical care, yet malposition rates reach 30% in emergent settings. Intraparenchymal placement-where the tube traverses lung tissue-is a severe complication that can result in life-threatening hemorrhage, bronchopleural fistula, or lung abscess. Clinical recognition is notoriously difficult; bedside chest radiography (CXR) frequently fails to define the tube's depth relative to three-dimensional thoracic anatomy, creating a dangerous diagnostic gap. Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for evaluation. We review the spectrum of

Phonology and orthography in deaf readers: Evidence from a lateralized ambiguity resolution paradigm.

This study explored differences between the two hemispheres in processing written words among deaf readers. The main hypothesis was that impoverished phonological abilities of deaf readers may lead to atypical patterns of hemispheric involvement. To test this, deaf participants completed a metalinguistic awareness test to evaluate their orthographic and phonological awareness. Additionally, they were asked to read biased or neutral target sentences ending with an ambiguous homograph, with each sentence followed by the request to make a rapid lexical decision on a target word presented either t

Analysis of Leishmania chagasi by 2-D difference gel electrophoresis (2-D DIGE) and immunoproteomic: identification of novel candidate antigens for diagnostic tests and vaccine.

Identification of novel antigens is essential for developing new diagnostic tests and vaccines. We used DIGE to compare protein expression in amastigote and promastigote forms of Leishmania chagasi. Nine hundred amastigote and promastigote spots were visualized. Five amastigote-specific, 25 promastigote-specific, and 10 proteins shared by the two parasite stages were identified. Furthermore, 41 proteins were identified in the Western blot employing 2-DE and sera from infected dogs. From these proteins, 3 and 38 were reactive with IgM and total IgG, respectively. The proteins recognized by tota

A one-press hollow microneedle-paper patch for automated sampling-to-readout multiplexed sensing of biomarkers in interstitial fluid.

Interstitial fluid analysis offers noninvasive diagnostic potential but faces challenges in efficient sampling and multiplexed detection. Here, we present a novel one-press hollow microneedle paper-based patch (HMN-PP) for rapid (<7 min), visual, and simultaneous monitoring of glucose, uric acid, lactate, and pH in interstitial fluid. The system integrates a mechanically robust hollow microneedle array (600 μm height, 0.53 N/needle penetration force) fabricated via a scalable casting-demolding process, enabling minimally invasive fluid extraction. A 3D wax-patterned paper chip incorporates mul

Sensory-motor integration and brain lesions: Progress toward explaining domain-specific phenomena within domain-general working memory.

Reports of rare patients who seem to lack the ability to retain certain types of information across brief delays have long sustained the popular idea that newly-perceived verbal, visual, and spatial information is initially recorded in separate, specialized short-term memory buffers. However, evidence from these same cases includes puzzling details that question explanations based on isolated deficits to a specialized storage system. We highlight consistent findings from patients with deficient auditory short-term memory that warrant further investigation and may challenge the specialized stor

Volumetric Comparison of Overall Brain and Neuropil Size Between Social and Non-social Spiders: Exploring the Social Brain Hypothesis.

The social brain hypothesis predicts that the relative size of specific brain regions is driven by the cognitive capacity required to manage complex (social) situations. Spiders are intriguing models to test this hypothesis, as sociality is rare in this usually solitary and aggressive group. Here, we used microCT to compare the central nervous system and brain volumes between social and solitary females of the species in two taxonomic groups, huntsman and crab spiders. Overall, we found no difference in relative CNS and brain volume between social and solitary species. However, social huntsman

TDLNet: Transfer Data Learning Network for Cross-Subject Classification Based on Multiclass Upper Limb Motor Imagery EEG.

The limited number of brain-computer interface based on motor imagery (MI-BCI) instruction sets for different movements of single limbs makes it difficult to meet practical application requirements. Therefore, designing a single-limb, multi-category motor imagery (MI) paradigm and effectively decoding it is one of the important research directions in the future development of MI-BCI. Furthermore, one of the major challenges in MI-BCI is the difficulty of classifying brain activity across different individuals. In this article, the transfer data learning network (TDLNet) is proposed to achieve

TSPNet: a time-spatial parallel network for classification of EEG-based multiclass upper limb motor imagery BCI.

The classification of electroencephalogram (EEG) motor imagery signals has emerged as a prominent research focus within the realm of brain-computer interfaces. Nevertheless, the conventional, limited categories (typically just two or four) offered by brain-computer interfaces fail to provide an extensive array of control modes. To address this challenge, we propose the Time-Spatial Parallel Network (TSPNet) for recognizing six distinct categories of upper limb motor imagery. Within TSPNet, temporal and spatial features are extracted separately, with the time dimension feature extractor and spa

Internet of things enabled indoor activity monitoring for visually impaired people with hybrid deep learning and optimized algorithms for enhanced safety.

Indoor activity monitoring methods promise the wellbeing and security of elderly and visually challenging individuals living in their homes. These methods use numerous technologies and sensors to monitor daily actions, namely movement, sleep patterns, and medication compliance, presenting valued opinions of the consumer's daily life and complete health. The accuracy and adaptability of the deep learning (DL) model make human activity recognition (HAR) a critical device to improve effectiveness, security, and modified understandings in indoor areas. Using DL techniques, HAR transforms indoor mo

Development of the visual system of the chick--a review.

This article reviews recent and earlier findings that yield the present knowledge about the embryonic development of retina, tectum, and the retinotectal projection in the chick. Data and concepts dealing with cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation, the processes underlying the generation of cytoarchitecture in the nervous system are discussed for the avian visual system. Emphasis is also laid on the presentation of hypotheses and experiments about directed axonal growth along the visual pathway and concerning the mechanisms responsible for the establishment of specific connections

Increased functional connectivity between dorsal posterior parietal and ventral occipitotemporal cortex during uncertain memory decisions.

Retrieval of episodic memories is a multi-component act that relies on numerous operations ranging from processing the retrieval cue, evaluating retrieved information, and selecting the appropriate response given the demands of the task. Motivated by a rich functional neuroimaging literature, recent theorizing about various computations at retrieval has focused on the role of posterior parietal cortex (PPC). In a potentially promising line of research, recent neuroimaging findings suggest that different subregions of dorsal PPC respond distinctly to different aspects of retrieval decisions, su

Visuo-spatial consciousness and parieto-occipital areas: a high-resolution EEG study.

Conscious and unconscious visuo-spatial processes are mainly related to parieto-occipital cortical activation. In this study, the working hypothesis was that a specific pattern of parieto-occipital activation is induced by conscious, as opposed to unconscious, visuo-spatial processes. Electroencephalographic data (128 channels) were recorded in 12 normal adults during a visuo-spatial task. A cue stimulus appeared on the right or the left (equal probability) monitor side for a 'threshold time' inducing approximately 50% of correct recognitions. It was followed (after 2 s) by visual go stimuli a

Early-Onset Cannabis Use, Retinal Biomarkers, and Risk for Schizophrenia Preliminary Study.

PURPOSE: Cannabis remains one of the most commonly used psychoactive substances among adolescents, with increasing prevalence of daily use during formative neurodevelopmental years. This preliminary study looks at changes in low spatial frequency contrast sensitivity perception using frequency doubling virtual reality technology (IMMAD-FDT). Early initiation of cannabis use-particularly before age 16-has been consistently linked to an elevated risk for schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. The retina, as an extension of the central nervous system, offers a unique, non-invasive window

The cognitive impact of chronic low back pain: Positive effect of multidisciplinary pain therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the affected cognitive problems in chronic low back pain patients. For this patient cohort research mostly focused on memory of pain, rather than cognitive difficulties related to pain. Chronic pain may be associated with specific (yet undefined) cognitive deficits that affect everyday behaviour. We set out to compare the cognitive function of patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) in the course of multidisciplinary pain treatments before and after therapy. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with cLBP and 25 healthy controls between 20 and 70 years were recru

Comprehensive expression pattern of kin of irregular chiasm-like 3 in the adult mouse brain.

Kin of irregular chiasm-like 3 (Kirrel3), a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, is expressed in the central nervous system during development and in adulthood. It has been reported that Kirrel3 is involved in the axonal fasciculation in the olfactory bulb, the neuronal migration in the pontine nucleus, and the synapse formation in the hippocampal neurons in mice. Although KIRREL3 mutations have been implicated in autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability in humans, the comprehensive expression pattern of Kirrel3 in the adult brain is not fully understood. To better visualize K

Mirror activity in the human brain while observing hand movements: a comparison between EEG desynchronization in the mu-range and previous fMRI results.

Mu (mu) rhythms are EEG oscillations between 8-13 Hz distinguished from alpha by having more anterior distribution and being desynchronized by motor rather than visual activity. Evidence accumulating during the last decade suggests that the desynchronization of mu rhythms (mu suppression) might be also a manifestation of a human Mirror Neuron System (MNS). To further explore this hypothesis we used a paradigm that, in a previous fMRI study, successfully activated this putative MNS in humans. Our direct goal was to provide further support for a link between modulation of mu rhythms and the MNS,

Epiluminescence microscopy features of cutaneous malignant melanoma metastases.

Especially small and/or initial cutaneous malignant melanoma metastases (CMMMs) are tumours with inconspicuous clinical and sometimes histological features which may be difficult to differentiate from benign melanocytic lesions or angiomas. Thus it would be very valuable to have additional criteria for the differential diagnosis of such lesions. Thirty histologically verified CMMMs were examined using epiluminescence microscopy (ELM) in order to visualize a large number of morphological features permitting the recognition of malignancy. One hundred primary cutaneous malignant melanomas (PCMMs)

Age-related changes in eye movements during pictorial recall in older adults.

During the recall of pictorial information, individuals typically exhibit eye movements directed toward the locations they focused on during perceptual encoding. This behavior is thought to support memory retrieval by linking spatial information to cognitive processes. Given the known memory decline associated with healthy aging, investigating age-related changes in eye movements during recall is crucial. We compared the eye movement patterns of older (N = 38, 65-75 years) and younger adults (N = 37, 20-35 years) during different pictorial recall tasks. Both groups tended to look back at the o

Gait Analysis in Neurologic Disorders: Methodology, Applications, and Clinical Considerations.

Gait and balance disorders are a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and disability in central and peripheral neurologic disorders. Neurologic gait disorders are classically evaluated with a clinical examination and visual pattern recognition. Gait patterns such as a parkinsonian or ataxic gait may have distinct etiologies and are assessed using the neurologic physical examination and validated clinical scales. Technological advances have made gait analysis more accessible, allowing precise objective measurement of gait and balance deficits. Gait analysis may be more sensitive at detecting
