Emotional and physical health problems of battered women.

The present study focused on the emotional and physical health problems of battered women by comparing a sample of residents in shelters with a group of women in the community matched for family income, length of marriage, and number of children on the General Health Questionnaire. The results indicated that battered women report a significantly higher level of somatic complaints, anxiety, and depression. These effects tended to be associated with other life stressors and children with serious behavior problems. The implications of the study are discussed in terms of assessing the needs of bat

Rapid expansion of legalized gambling has been associated with increased rates of gambling disorders among adults and adolescents worldwide. Epidemiologic studies suggest that, in North America, up to 6% of adults and 20% of adolescents have a gambling problem. Despite increasing prevalence rates of gambling disorders, little research is available on how to treat such disorders in adolescents. Much of what is known about how to treat adolescent problem and pathological gambling comes from research on psychosocial and psychopharmacologic treatments for adult pathological gambling. Risk factors

An Observational Study of Anticipatory Coping Behavior of Women for Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia for Breast Cancer Treatment.

Background It is necessary to explore patients' expectations of chemotherapy-induced alopecia, anticipate reactions to alopecia, and how women intend to prepare for an altered body appearance. Studies regarding women's critical aspects of anticipatory coping behavior (anticipate reactions to alopecia and how women intend to prepare for a modified body appearance) towards hair loss and factors influencing it are sparse, especially from India. This study helped identify the factors influencing the anticipatory coping behavior toward chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Methodology This was a cross-sec

Bidirectional relationship between internalizing symptoms and gastrointestinal problems in youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Many youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience co-occurring conditions, such as gastrointestinal (GI) problems and internalizing symptoms. However, the relationship among these co-occurring problems is not well-understood. We analyzed parent reports of GI problems and internalizing symptoms of 621 youth with ASD using path models in a structural equation modeling framework. The best-fitting model was a bidirectional model wherein internalizing symptoms, including withdrawn and anxious behavior, were correlated with GI problems, including constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach p

Relative Frequency of Psychiatric, Neurodevelopmental, and Somatic Symptoms as Reported by Mothers of Children with Autism Compared with ADHD and Typical  Samples.

No study has analyzed the relative occurrence of a broad range of symptoms reported by mothers of children with autism, ADHD-Combined, and ADHD-Inattentive and typical controls. Mothers rated 1436 children with autism, 1056 with ADHD without autism, and 186 controls, 2-17 years, on 41 internalizing, externalizing, neurodevelopmental, and somatic problems. Most children with autism had symptoms of ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, and expressive language disorder and almost half had dysgraphia and receptive language disorder. A multi-site randomized controlled trial of a cognitive skills programme for male mentally disordered offenders: social-cognitive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive skills programmes have been associated with improvements on psychometric measures and reductions in antisocial behaviour in mentally disordered offenders (MDOs). However, to date there have been no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of such programmes with this population. In the first RCT of a cognitive skills programme with MDOs we aimed to determine if participation in the Reasoning and Rehabilitation (R&R) programme was associated with improvements in social-cognitive skills and thinking styles. METHOD: A total of 84 men with a primary diagnosis of psychotic disorde

Developmental Interplay Between Loneliness and Conduct Problems From Late Childhood to Early Adolescence: The Role of Maternal Reactions to Children's Negative Emotions.

BACKGROUND: The transition from late childhood to early adolescence is a pivotal developmental period characterized by substantial social, emotional, and behavioral change. During this transition, loneliness and conduct problems may co-occur and mutually reinforce one another, increasing vulnerability to later maladjustment. However, longitudinal research on their bidirectional developmental interplay and the family processes that may underlie it remains limited, particularly with respect to maternal reactions to children's negative emotions (MRCNE). This study examined the bidirectional longi

Too Aroused to Sleep: The Role of Tilt in Playing Online Poker and First-Person Shooter Games.

The 24/7 accessibility to online poker (OP) and online first-person shooter (FPS) games increases the risk of developing problematic behaviors. Previous studies have shown mixed results regarding the impact of OP and FPS severity on sleep problems, and more specifically on insomnia symptoms. However, the intense emotions and arousal experienced during these games, such as tilt and pre-sleep arousal, have not been thoroughly investigated yet. The objectives were to test whether (1) tilt’s severity mediates the relationship between problem gambling and insomnia symptoms in OP players; (2) tilt’s

Age Differences in the Mediating Effects of Parenting Stress on the Relationship Between Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease and Externalizing Problems in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Cyanotic congenital heart disease (CHD) has detrimental effects on behavioral function in children and adolescents. However, few study authors have examined the underlying mechanisms of these effects. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to investigate the mediating effects of parenting stress in the association between cyanotic CHD and externalizing problems and to explore whether age moderated these mediating effects. METHODS: A total of 697 children and adolescents (aged 2-17 years) with CHD (252 with cyanotic CHD and 445 with acyanotic CHD) in Taiwan were enrolled. The Chil

Identity problems and suicidal ideation severity among women with bulimic-spectrum pathology.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa often experience suicidal ideation. Identity disturbance, or unstable sense of self, has been connected both to eating disorders and to suicidality. This study sought to test whether identity problems were related to severity of current suicidal ideation in a sample of women with bulimic-spectrum pathology, above and beyond history of suicidal behavior and several symptoms of borderline personality disorder. Women (N = 204; 90.7% Caucasian; Mage = 25.7 years [SD = 8.8]) with bulimic-spectrum pathology completed self-report personality assessments and items eval

Gambling-Related Problems as a Mediator Between Treatment and Mental Health with At-Risk College Student Gamblers.

Disordered gambling has been linked to increased negative affect, and some promising treatments have been shown to be effective at reducing gambling behaviors and related problems (Larimer et al. in Addiction 107:1148-1158, 2012). The current study seeks to expand upon the findings of Larimer et al. (Addiction 107:1148-1158, 2012) by examining the relationship between gambling-related problems and mental health symptoms in college students. Specifically, the three-group design tested the effects of two brief interventions for gambling—an individual, in-person personalized feedback intervention

Brief report: HIV-exposed newborns show inferior orienting and abnormal reflexes on the Brazelton Scale.

Assessed 48 infants of HIV-positive and HIV-negative mothers on the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale. Infants exposed to HIV-positive mothers were disadvantaged from birth due to their mothers having obstetric complications and to the infants having orienting problems and abnormal reflexes on the Brazelton Newborn Scale. These problems may be early precursors of the later visual-spatial delays and hypertonicity noted in these infants.

Assessments of the effects of nutrition on mental development and behavior in Jamaican studies.

Methodological issues and problems in studies of the effects of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) and child development are discussed with reference to our experience in Jamaica. The usefulness of defining PEM by stunting, wasting, and edema is stressed. Difficulties in achieving reliable and valid measurements of mental development and behavior in Third World children, and allowing for the confounding and possibly interacting effects of social background, are discussed. Problems associated with different approaches are outlined.

Creativity on demand - Hacking into creative problem solving.

How can creative problem solving be enhanced? The paper identifies and examines modulatory approaches from the cognitive and neuroscientific literature that have been made to make creative problem solving better. We review neuromodulatory approaches of both global and local effects. Through a 2-process model of creative problem solving that involves both automatic and controlled processes, we demonstrate how these approaches could be used and what potential they may have for enhancing creative problem solving. We conclude that direct neuromodulation will be best used in unison with behavioral

Office-based screening, prevention, and management of diabetic foot disorders.

Diabetic foot problems are significant cause of morbidity. With good medical care, the progression of neuropathy and vascular disease can be slowed but not stopped. Effective diabetic foot care requires screening to detect the at-risk foot, prevention to avoid the occurrence of ulcers, and treatment to heal ulcers quickly before they become more significant problems. Screening comprises assessment of patient behaviors and skin, neurologic, and vascular examinations. Prevention is accomplished by patient education and appropriate footwear or bracing. Recognition of Charcot's arthropathy can gre

Societal problems in human and medical genetics.

The applications of human and medical genetics raise many societal and ethical problems. This paper deals with a variety of such issues posed by current and future developments in genetic counseling, genetic screening, prenatal and predictive diagnosis, and gene therapy. The promise and problems of behavioral genetics are discussed. Problems of privacy, decision making, societal pressures, stigmatization, and informed consent to genetic study are raised. Use of genetic data by insurance companies or other public groups is discussed. The rapid unfolding of genetic information affecting human he

Falsification and experimental psychology: examples from face perception.

The present article examines the relationships between the falsification approach as outlined in Popper (1995) and the methodological basis of experimental psychology. In view of this, I will offer suggestions that may reduce somewhat the severity of the following two problems that were raised against Popper approach: The "Duhem problem", and "contradictory-findings disregard", i.e., the fact that scientists tend to ignore findings that disconfirm their theory. These suggestions are based on the development of the "temporary closed explanatory domain" (TCED) model, which describes how the rese
