BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pathogenic infections caused by Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia can result in the production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC's) and other toxic compounds from methionine catabolism that can lead to halitosis and periodontitis.
