Reduced-credit bachelor's degrees and the BSPH: what should undergraduate public health optimize for?

Undergraduate public health education has expanded rapidly in the United States and now serves several overlapping purposes. The Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) may function as an entry point into the public health workforce, a foundation for graduate public health study, a pathway for students considering clinical professions, and a broad liberal education experience centered on population health. Recent accreditation changes within the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) have opened a formal pathway for reduced-credit bachelor's degrees, …

A Call for Clarity: A Proposed Toolkit to Integrate Foundational Sciences into Pharmacy Curricula.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit has been used across many schools of pharmacy to guide the depth and breadth of therapeutics coverage, but no counterpart for foundational science coverage in pharmacy education currently exists. Broad topic areas for the foundational sciences are outlined in Appendix 1 of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) standards, but the standards lack specific direction with regard to foundational sciences content needed in the professional pharmacy curriculum. Faculty are therefore challenge…

Strengthening the Clinical Learning Environment by Mandate-Implementing the ACGME Common Program Requirements.

RATIONALE: Three years ago, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) introduced updated Common Program Requirements in recognition of the need to further promote resident and faculty member well-being and patient safety. The ACGME acknowledged residencies would need time to comply with new requirements. This grace period, however, concluded as of July 1, 2019, and programs now risk citations for failure to implement new requirements. METHODS AND RESULTS: The authors, members of the Association of Program Directors in Radiology Common Program Requirements Ad Hoc committ…

Training in human genetics in the United States.

A national study of existing and future human resource needs in the field of human genetics has never been conducted. Published figures of the existing levels of human genetics training are not available. This report reviews the current status of graduate training in human genetics in the US. Issues of certification, accreditation, enrollment and recommendations for future training needs are also discussed. As of 1989, 109 US programs offered training at the graduate or postgraduate level in human genetics. Sixty-seven percent were degree-granting programs. A 20% increase in the number of prog…

Virtual Echocardiography Screening Tool Identifies Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Significantly Earlier Than High-Risk Clinical Diagnosis.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is often a progressive, fatal disease. Because of nonspecificity of symptoms and limited awareness of PAH, patients are often diagnosed and referred late to accredited pulmonary hypertension (PH) centers, contributing to worsening survival and overall prognosis. The objective of the present study was to determine if the virtual echocardiography screening tool (VEST), a simple scoring system using routinely reported echocardiographic metrics, could capture earlier diagnoses of PAH before clinical recognition and referral to expert PH centers. This study is

Challenges in delivering computed tomography coronary angiography as the first-line test for stable chest pain.

OBJECTIVE: The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) clinical guidelines 'chest pain of recent onset: assessment and diagnosis' (update 2016) state CT coronary angiography (CTCA) should be offered as the first-line investigation for patients with stable chest pain. However, the current provision in the UK is unknown. We aimed to evaluate this and estimate the requirements for full implementation of the guidelines including geographical variation. Ancillary aims included surveying the number of CTCA-capable scanners and accredited practitioners in the UK. METHODS: The number

Exploring the Cost and Access Gap Between Osteopathic and Allopathic Medical Students When Applying for General Surgery Fourth-Year Away Rotations.

INTRODUCTION: Away rotations have been widely accepted as a critical factor involved in the selection of future residents by general surgery residency programs nationwide. With the recent change to a single accreditation system merging the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), programs offering away rotation positions must contend with an increased applicant pool consisting of both allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) medical students. The aim of the study was to determine if any ACGME general surgery residency institutions dis…

Describing Intellectual Disability in Local Public Health Community Health Assessments and Community Health Improvement Plans.

To describe intellectual disability inclusion in local health department (LHD) community health assessments (CHAs) and community health improvement plans (CHIPs), this study used a cross-sectional design, analyzing CHAs and CHIPs of Public Health Accreditation Board-accredited LHDs. We find that approximately 5% (n = 17) of CHAs included an intellectual disability (ID) partner in the development process. Less than 2% (n = 3) of CHIPs included a goal, objective, or activity that specifically included people with ID. Many CHAs used language that identified ID as a health outcome to be prevented.…

Musculoskeletal Anatomy Education: A Survey of North American Medical Programs.

Postgraduate data reveal that most physicians lack adequate anatomical knowledge and clinical confidence when practicing musculoskeletal (MSK) medicine. Curricular data from nationally accredited medical programs clearly indicate that the total time dedicated to gross anatomy instruction has decreased over recent decades. However, little information is available regarding the MSK anatomy learning environment across accredited medical programs in North America. The purpose of this study was to document the current state of preclinical MSK anatomy education across North American medical programs

Knowledge and competency standards for specialized cognitive behavior therapy for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Although exposure-based cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy have demonstrated efficacy for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the lack of clinicians effectively trained in these treatments significantly limit effective intervention options for affected youth. This is very unfortunate since child onset is reported by 50% of adults with OCD. To ameliorate this serious global issue the 14 nation International Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders Accreditation Task Force (ATF) of The Canadian Institute for Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (CIOCD) has developed knowledge and competency s…

Specialty knowledge and competency standards for pharmacotherapy for adult obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects approximately one person in 40 and causes substantial suffering. Evidence-based treatments can benefit many; however, optimal treatment can be difficult to access. Diagnosis is frequently delayed, and pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions often fail to follow evidence-based guidelines. To ameliorate this distressing situation, the International OCD Accreditation Task Force of the Canadian Institute for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders has developed knowledge and competency standards for specialized treatments for OCD through the lifespan.…
