Readaptation time after photo stress. Readaptation time as a function of oxygen concentration.

Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is used to study the eye's ReAdaptation Time (RAT) after a brief exposure to a light flash. The effects on RAT of breathing different concentrations of O2 are examined. Significant changes in RAT have been registered, showing that inhalation of 100% O2 as compared with room air, results in a shortened RAT (i.e. improvement), while inhalation of 9% O2 leads to an increased RAT (i.e. impairment). The physiology of RAT and the possible mechanisms behind the changes caused by different O2 concentrations are discussed. The findings of this group are compared with those o

Clinical and Molecular Advances on the Black Yeast Exophiala dermatitidis.

Exophiala dermatitidis is an emerging black yeast recognized in both superficial and life-threatening infections, including those in immunocompetent hosts. This narrative review focuses on recent developments (mostly between 2019 and 2025) in two major areas. First, we examined the clinical and epidemiological background of E. dermatitidis, with particular focus on its involvement in cystic fibrosis and CARD9 deficiency, as well as central nervous system, ocular, and systemic infections. Second, we address the molecular basis of its pathogenicity, with particular attention to melanin productio

Nyctalopia and conjunctival xerosis indicating vitamin A deficiency in cystic fibrosis.

Thirty-one Cystic Fibrosis patients were investigated for clinical and biochemical evidence of Vitamin A deficiency. All had been prescribed oral pancreatic enzyme replacements and twice the recommended daily requirement of Vitamin A (5000IU). None were aware of any ocular symptoms, but 3 out of 31 (10 per cent) were found to have frank conjunctival xerosis and six (19 per cent) to have abnormal dark adaptation. There was no correlation between the above findings and abnormal liver function or clinical disease severity. All patients with cystic fibrosis should have regular Vitamin A estimation

Enhanced retinal responses in Huntington's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by chorea, cognitive impairment and psychiatric symptoms. Retinal examination of HD patients as well as in HD animal models have shown evidence of retinal dysfunction. However, a detailed retinal study employing clinically available measurement tools has not been reported to date in HD. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess retinal responses measured by electroretinogram (ERG) between HD patients and controls and evaluate any correlation between ERG measurements and stage of disease.

Autonomic involvement in multiple sclerosis: a pupillometric study.

To study pupillary autonomic function in multiple sclerosis (MS), we examined 36 subjects with low disability, preserved visual acuity and no recent history (2 years) of optic neuritis or actual visual complaints. Compared to controls, MS patients showed a greater dilatator reaction with darkness and, for the light reflex, a lower amplitude and contraction rate and a greater recovery of pupillary diameter 5 s after the stimulus. Within the MS group, no difference was found comparing patients with or without the following characteristics: nuclear magnetic resonance imaging evidence of midbrain

Eye movements and motion perception during off-vertical axis rotation after spaceflight.

Constant velocity off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) provides dynamic linear acceleration stimuli that can be used to assess otolith function. Eight astronauts were rotated in darkness about their longitudinal axis 20° off vertical at low (0.125 Hz) and high (0.5 Hz) frequencies and their responses were compared before and after spaceflight. Eye movements were recorded using infrared videography and perceived motion was evaluated using a joystick with four degrees of freedom - pitch and roll tilt, front-back and lateral translation. Low-frequency OVAR generates tilt otolith-induced responses -

Neuroperiodization After Sport-Related Concussion: A Perspective on Adaptive Load Prescription Within the Amsterdam Return-to-Sport Strategy.

Background/Objectives: Contemporary sport-related concussion management has shifted from prolonged rest toward early, symptom-limited activity and a staged return-to-sport strategy. The Amsterdam framework provides an essential safety hierarchy but does not fully operationalize how clinicians should manipulate exercise dose, task complexity, recovery, and interacting rehabilitation domains within each stage. This Perspective proposes neuroperiodization as a constrained, criterion-based load-prescription framework nested within the Amsterdam strategy. Framework Development: The framework distin

[Validation of the Ocular Surface Disease Index Questionnaire for Chilean patients].

BACKGROUND: Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) is the most commonly used questionnaire worldwide to detect dry eye disease. Although it is massively used in clinical practice in Chile, its use has not been validated yet in the country. AIM: To develop a cultural adaptation and to validate the OSDI questionnaire for the Chilean population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For cultural adaptation, a translation, retro-translation and an expert panel review was carried out. The resulting questionnaire was applied to a pilot group of twelve participants and their comments were considered for the final que

Anatomical segregation of different adaptative processes within the vestibulocerebellum of the cat.

Bilateral surgical lesions of the flocculus or the nodulo-uvular lobes were performed in the cat. Effects of these lesions on optokinetic and optokinetic afternystagmus OKAN), vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), visual suppression, and adaptation and habituation of VOR were studied using an identical experimental protocol. After flocculectomy, all these functions were impaired, except for habituation. Long-term postoperative recordings only revealed a recovery of the suppression of VOR, suggesting a limited contribution of the flocculus to this function. After nodulo-uvulectomy, only habituation an

[Contact correction: method for arresting the progress of keratoconus].

The effect of rigid contact lenses on the course of keratocone during different stages is studied. A total of 121 patients (234 eyes) aged 11 to 49 years were examined. Early onset of keratocone is associated with its more rapid progress; the evolution of the disease from the initial to terminal stage takes 7 years with lenses and 4 without them; the progress of keratocone from one stage to another with contact correction takes more than 2 years versus less than 1.5 years without correction. Rigid contact lenses inhibit the progress of keratocone only at the initial stage of the disease.

Retinal Responses to Short- and Longer-Term Predominant ON or OFF Stimulation in Emmetropes and Myopes.

PURPOSE: The link between nearwork and myopia is controversially discussed. Features of the viewing target may stimulate eye growth, for example, black-on-white text was found to stimulate retinal OFF pathways and promote choroidal thinning, whereas inverted text led to ON pathway stimulation and thicker choroids. We used electroretinograms (ERGs) to compare retinal activity for both stimuli in the parafovea in emmetropes and myopes and studied the effects of adaptation. METHODS: ERGs were recorded in 42 subjects (18-30 years) during 200 ms-flashes on a CRT monitor, superimposed with an annul

Impairment of saccade adaptation in a patient with a focal thalamic lesion.

The frequent jumps of the eyeballs-called saccades-imply the need for a constant correction of motor errors. If systematic errors are detected in saccade landing, the saccade amplitude adapts to compensate for the error. In the laboratory, saccade adaptation can be studied by displacing the saccade target. Functional selectivity of adaptation for different saccade types suggests that adaptation occurs at multiple sites in the oculomotor system. Saccade motor learning might be the result of a comparison between a prediction of the saccade landing position and its actual postsaccadic location. T

Pulse-step models of control strategies for dynamic ocular accommodation and disaccommodation.

Dynamic properties and control strategies of step responses by accommodation and disaccommodation differ from one another. Peak velocity of accommodation increases with response magnitude, while peak velocity and peak acceleration of disaccommodation increase with starting position. These dynamic properties can be modeled as control strategies that use independent acceleration-pulse and velocity-step components that are integrated respectively into phasic-velocity signals that control movement and tonic-position signals that control magnitude. Accommodation is initiated toward its final destin

Frame of reference and adaptation to directional bias in a video-controlled reaching task.

The present study (N=56) investigated spatio-temporal accuracy of horizontal reaching movements controlled visually through a vertical video monitor. Direct vision of the hand was precluded and the direction of hand trajectory, as perceived on the video screen, was varied by changing the angle of the camera. The orientation of the visual scene displayed on the fronto-parallel plane was thus congruent (0 degrees condition) or non-congruent (directional bias of 15 degrees, 30 degrees or 45 degrees counterclockwise) according to the horizontal working space. The goal of this study was to determin

Anticipatory locomotor adjustments for accommodating versus avoiding level changes in humans.

The control of locomotion has been studied from various perspectives related to the tasks of pattern generation, equilibrium control or adaptation to the environment. The last of these locomotor components has received comparably less attention, specifically pertaining to anticipatory adjustments. Continuing the work which has been conducted on both humans and cats, the present paper explores the nature of the differences in anticipatory locomotor adjustments for obstacle avoidance versus the accommodation to level changes. Six subjects walked in six different environments including no obstruc
