Phenotype Development in Adolescents With Tourette Syndrome: A Large Clinical Longitudinal Study.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by frequent comorbidities and a wide spectrum of phenotype presentations. This study aimed to describe the development of phenotypes in TS and tic-related impairment in a large longitudinal study of 226 children and adolescents followed up after 6 years. The participants were clinically examined to assess tic severity and impairment, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The development in phenotypes changed toward less comorbidity with 40% TS-only (no OCD or ADHD) (TS with

Emergence of sex differences in the development of substance use and abuse during adolescence.

Substance use and abuse begin during adolescence. Male and female adolescent humans initiate use at comparable rates, but males increase use faster. In adulthood, more men than women use and abuse addictive drugs. However, some women progress more rapidly from initiation of use to entry into treatment. In animal models, adolescent males and females consume addictive drugs similarly. However, reproductively mature females acquire self-administration faster, and in some models, escalate use more. Sex/gender differences exist in neurobiologic factors mediating both reinforcement (dopamine, opioid

Neurological subtle signs and cognitive development: a study in late childhood and adolescence.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Neurological subtle signs (NSS) are often observed during the neurological examination of children and tend to disappear with age. Their persistence into late adolescence or young adulthood has been related to psychiatric and neurocognitive disorders. To provide a better understanding of their functional basis, a longitudinal correlational study with neurocognitive measurements was performed. METHOD: We conducted multiple regression and correlation analyses of NSS with demographic and cognitive measures on a subset of 341 healthy children (56% males), taking part in a lo

The parallel development of ODD and CD symptoms from early childhood to adolescence.

This study examined the developmental relations between symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) from early childhood to adolescence. Specifically we tested, according to parent-reported problems, whether symptoms of ODD precede the development of CD symptoms, whether ODD and CD symptoms are reciprocally associated across time, or whether ODD and CD symptoms develop parallel to each other across time. Participants were a community-based sample (at time 1: N = 485, 48% boys) assessed biannually five times from age 4 to 6 until age 12-14. The findings suggested t

Late-developing infection following posterior fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

This study is a retrospective case series review of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) who were revised more than 1 year after the index procedure, due to a late-developing deep wound infection, to determine onset, bacteriology, possible influence of implant alloy (titanium vs. stainless-steel) and treatment outcome of patients. From a total of 540 patients who underwent posterior-only fusion for AIS from 1993 through 2005 at our institution, 15 cases (2.77%) were revised due to a late-developing post-operative infection: there were six males and nine females, with an average

Cerebellum development during childhood and adolescence: a longitudinal morphometric MRI study.

In addition to its well-established role in balance, coordination, and other motor skills, the cerebellum is increasingly recognized as a prominent contributor to a wide array of cognitive and emotional functions. Many of these capacities undergo dramatic changes during childhood and adolescence. However, accurate characterization of co-occurring anatomical changes has been hindered by lack of longitudinal data and methodologic challenges in quantifying subdivisions of the cerebellum. In this study we apply an innovative image analysis technique to quantify total cerebellar volume and 11 subdi

Parental overprotection predicts the development of functional somatic symptoms in young adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether parental overprotection contributes to the development of functional somatic symptoms (FSS) in young adolescents. In addition, we aimed to study whether this potential effect of parental overprotection is mediated by parenting distress and/or moderated by the adolescent's sex. STUDY DESIGN: FSS were measured in 2230 adolescents (ages 10 to 12 years from the Tracking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey) by the Somatic Complaints subscale of the Youth Self Report at baseline and at follow-up 2 1/2 years later. Parental overprotection as perceived by the child was

Measurement of victimization in adolescence: development and validation of the Childhood Experiences of Violence Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: This study presents evaluative data on the Childhood Experiences of Violence Questionnaire (CEVQ), a brief, self-report measure of youth victimization. METHODS: Literature reviews, expert consultations and qualitative interviews informed the development of the CEVQ. Test-retest reliability of the preliminary and final versions of the CEVQ was examined. Child welfare workers (n=11) assessed content validity. Construct validity was assessed by comparing levels of emotional and behavioral problems of youth with self-reports (n=177) of victimization. Criterion validity was tested by co

[Development of the spine after traumatic spinal cord injury in children and adolescents].

In the 1970s, there was growing concern about the risk of secondary deformations of the spine as these seemed to endanger the otherwise improving prognosis for the life of paraplegic subjects, especially of paralyzed children and adolescents. According to the literature, the level and extent of the spinal cord injury and the age at the time of injury are determinants of the development of scoliosis, hyperlordosis or global kyphosis. Correction of the deformity by brace orthosis is not indicated except for children. The indications for surgical intervention in terms of the extent of the scolios

[Female victimization in the context of dating violence in adolescence: development of an instrument (VIFFA)].

The aim is to report on the development and preliminary validation of an instrument, VIFFA (Violence faite aux Filles dans les Fréquentations à l'Adolescence), on female victimization in the context of dating violence in adolescence. Objectives are twofold: to document the psychometric qualities of this self-report and to propose an instrument adapted to the context of young teens. The instrument refers to concepts of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Questioning in two phases is used to achieve proper understanding of the concept studied and to help select the partner to whom they refer

Is the course of brain development in schizophrenia delayed? Evidence from onsets in adolescence.

A degree of ventricular enlargement, together with a reduction of total cortical mass and loss of asymmetry is reported in schizophrenia, but the meaning is obscure. These changes may reflect an anomaly of brain development. Brain structure was assessed on a 1.5-Tesla MRI scan in a series of 29 adolescents at the time of a first episode of schizophrenia and compared with 15 adolescents with other serious psychiatric disturbance (mostly psychotic) and 20 normal adolescent controls. The age at scan ranged between 13 and 20 years. In the adolescents with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, total brain

[Risk factors for the development of asthma in children and adolescents. Results of a longitudinal study].

To investigate risk factors for the development of asthma, a population sample of children and adolescents, aged 7 to 17 yrs at enrollment, were studied twice, with a six year interval; complete data was available for 408 subjects (199 males). Obtained case history was used to assess the presence of asthma; pulmonary function, skin prick test reactivity, total serum IgE and bronchial responsiveness to inhaled histamine (BHR) were measured using standard techniques. The 12-month period prevalence of asthma increased significantly from the first to the second examination in both males (p < 0.001

Mechanisms of alcohol abuse and alcoholism in adolescents: a case for developing animal models.

This paper reviews the ontogeny of neurotransmitter systems and neuropharmacological challenge within transmitter systems and discusses the actions of alcohol on such systems during the juvenile through adolescent periods. To place the animal research within the context of human development, an attempt is made to first examine some fundamental principles of developmental research as they relate to the adolescent period. Evidence presented from animal studies indicates that unique neurochemical and behavioral changes are occurring during postnatal development, including adolescence, that could

[Development promoting environment--contributing factors in inpatient psychotherapy of children and adolescents].

Frame conditions especially in stationary psychotherapy with children and adolescents have the function of development-conducive 'play-pens'. As spaces which can be actively formed they offer room to make new experiences, but also serve as limits and friction surfaces with supporting ego-functions. Regarding the developmental phase of adolescence they also serve adolescents in their conflicts with parental authorities in the process of detaching and spiritualization and depersonalization of super-ego structures. Concerning various disorders adequately formed 'play-pens' also fulfill further sp

Model-informed drug development to support nemolizumab clinical development in adults and adolescents with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis.

AIMS: Population pharmacokinetic (popPK) and pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) models were developed to support clinical development of nemolizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting the IL-31 receptor α, in adolescents and adults with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). METHODS: Starting from previous analyses, data from phase 2 to phase 3 studies in AD and prurigo nodularis were integrated into popPK model development. In initial PK/PD model development, a turnover model was used for Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) and Peak Pruritus Numerical Rating Scale (PP NRS)

Co-Use of Some Substances Associated With Higher Doses in Adolescents: Findings From the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

PURPOSE: Adolescence is a critical developmental period marked by heightened vulnerability to initiating substance use, with long-term implications for health and behavior. Nicotine, alcohol, and cannabis are the most commonly used substances among adolescents. Their use often co-occurs but few studies have described or quantified the patterns and doses of substance co-use in this vulnerable population. METHODS: We used data from six waves of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. Substance use was measured through a web-based timeline followback interview, and outcomes are operati

Development of the "KARUNI" (young adolescents community) model to prevent stunting: a phenomenological study on adolescents in Gunungkidul regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Stunting is a major health problem in developing countries due to chronic malnutrition that impacts physical growth, cognitive ability, and long-term productivity. The focus of stunting prevention is generally aimed at pregnant women and toddlers, while adolescents, especially adolescent girls, are often neglected. In fact, they will be the future mothers who determine the quality of the next generation. Malnutrition and anemia in adolescents increase the risk of giving birth to stunted children. Innovative nutritional intervention programs, such as nutrition education and iron sup

The impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on sleep outcomes in 10,336 young adolescents: An Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the associations between prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), including low and moderate levels of exposure, and sleep outcomes in adolescence. This is an area that remains understudied despite evidence linking PAE to poor sleep in younger children and the growing recognition of harms associated with low levels of PAE. METHODS: Participants were 10,336 adolescents (aged 12-13) from the fourth assessment wave of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Cross-sectional generalised linear mixed models and generalised additive mixed models were used
