"The problem is that our culture is just so messed up about aging." Recruiting older men who have sex with men (MSM) into research studies: an example from a study of aging, HIV, and anal HPV.

BACKGROUND: Anal human papillomavirus (HPV) disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM), particularly those who are older and … identiality. Facilitators to participation were also identified; these motivational factors include altruism, wanting recommendations from a doctor, and desire to receive the best available care. CONCLUSION: Researchers seeking to enroll older men who have sex with men should be aware of these barriers and facilitators to participation in order to maximiz …

SARS-CoV-2 vaccines: a triumph of science and collaboration.

Roughly 1 year after the first case of COVID-19 was identified and less than 1 year after the sequencing of SARS-CoV-2, multiple SARS-CoV-2 … hould be credited to open science, industry partnerships, harmonization of clinical trials, and the altruism of study participants. The manufacturing and distribution of the emergency use-authorized SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are ongoing challenges. What remains now is to ensure broad and equitable global vaccination against COVID-19.

Chasing the storm: Recruiting non-hospitalized patients for a multi-site randomized controlled trial in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) remain the gold standard to evaluate clinical interventions, producing the highest level of evidence whi … y potentially eligible patients, partnering with testing sites, appealing to both self-interest and altruism, and large-scale media efforts with varying degrees of success.

Fostering repeat donations in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Most African countries are challenged in recruiting and retaining voluntary blood donors by cost and other complexities and in … ongst different blood donor groups in Kumasi, Ghana. The impact of community leaders in propagating altruism cannot be overemphasized. Programs aiming at motivating replacement donors to be repeat donors should be developed and assessed.

Beyond the gift: donor motivations and family experiences as drivers of body donation programs.

BACKGROUND: Body donation to science provides indispensable resources for medical education and research, yet shortages remain widespread. U … ion. RESULTS: Scientific utility was the leading motivation (56.7%), followed by symbolic meaning, altruism, and gratitude. Nearly all donors informed their relatives (96.2%), whose reactions varied by occupational category. Families expressed overall satisfaction but frequently described a "double bereavement" at death and at restitution. Word-of-mouth w …

A New Lifeline: Feasibility and Outcomes of Altruistic Donor Programs in Living-Donor Liver Transplantation, A Single Saudi Center Experience.

BACKGROUND In regions with limited deceased-donor liver transplantation, living-donor liver transplantation is often the only viable option. Altruistic (unrelated, nondirected) living-donor liver donation offers a novel strategy to expand the donor pool, particularly for patients lacking suitable related donors. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study analyzed all altruistic liver donors and their recipients at King Fahad Specialist Hospital-Dammam between April 2018 and December 2024. Donors underwent medical, psychosocial, and ethical evaluations, with final approval by an independent

Prosocial behaviours and emotional intelligence as factors associated with healthy lifestyles and violence in adolescents.

Adolescence is a stage of life characterised by vulnerability, which shapes young people's trajectories and potentially influences their behaviour. In this crucial period, the promotion of prosocial behaviours and the development of emotional intelligence are understood as key factors influencing adolescents' psychological and personal well-being. The general objective of this study was to find out the relationship between these two variables - prosocial behaviours and emotional intelligence - and their correlation with the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle and another fundamental aspect such

From humanitarian crisis to employment crisis: The lives and livelihoods of South Sudanese refugee health workers in Uganda.

Despite the many benefits of refugee health workers for health systems, they commonly face challenges integrating into host country workforces. The Global Code of Practice on International Recruitment of Health Personnel, which should monitor and protect migrant health workers, offers little guidance for refugees and research is needed to inform strategy. Based on interviews with 34 refugee health workers and 10 leaders across two settlements supporting populations fleeing the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan since 2013, we describe the governance and social dynamics affecting South Sudanese

Enmity then empathy: How militarisation facilitated collaborative but exclusive exchange in Sierra Leone's Ebola response.

In the autumn of 2014, with the 2013-16 West Africa Ebola epidemic spiralling out of control, the United Kingdom announced a bespoke military mission to support-and in some ways lead-numerous Ebola response functions in Sierra Leone. This study examines the nature and effect of the civil-military relationships that subsequently developed between civilian and military Ebola response workers (ERWs). In total, 110 interviews were conducted with key involved actors, and the findings were analysed by drawing on the neo-Durkheimian theory of organisations. This paper finds that stereotypical opposit

The responsibility of bioethicists: The case study of Yemen.

In this article, we describe in detail the health and general living conditions resulting from the ongoing armed conflict in Yemen, including the historical and geopolitical underpinnings. In addition to mere reporting, we use Yemen as a case study to examine the responsibility of bioethicists in general. We find it unacceptable that bioethics neglects the largest humanitarian crisis taking place in the world at the moment as well as the largest Cholera outbreak in history. We argue that bioethicists should do more to address armed conflicts and their resulting basic human rights violations. W

Prosocial behavior and psychopathology: An 11-year longitudinal study of inter- and intraindividual reciprocal relations across childhood and adolescence.

The current study investigated whether prosocial behavior and emotional problems, peer problems, conduct problems, and hyperactivity and inattention problems were long-term longitudinally and bidirectionally related at inter- and or intra-individual levels from early childhood through mid-adolescence. Parents in the United Kingdom reported their child's prosocial behavior and multidimensional psychopathology at ages 3, 5, 7, 11, and 14 years (N = 16,984, 51% male, 83% White). Four random intercepts cross-lagged panel models were fitted. Higher levels of earlier prosocial behavior were associat

Recruitment strategies: non-donor segmentation based on intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Non-donor behaviour can be influenced by many variables, both intrinsic and extrinsic, which differ among individuals. The aim of this study was therefore to segment Spanish non-donors based on criteria such as barriers and motivations, which influence the decision to donate for the first time, with the aim of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of recruitment actions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 2383 non-donors residing in Spain evaluated 21 barriers and 25 motivations through an online self-administered survey distributed by blood transfusion centres,

Empathy, social media, and directed altruistic living organ donation.

In this article we explore some of the ethical dimensions of using social media to increase the number of living kidney donors. Social media provides a platform for changing non-identifiable 'statistical victims' into 'real people' with whom we can identify and feel empathy: the so-called 'identifiable victim effect', which prompts charitable action. We examine three approaches to promoting kidney donation using social media which could take advantages of the identifiable victim effect: (a) institutionally organized campaigns based on historical cases aimed at promoting non-directed altruistic

Sign me up: rules of the road for humanitarian volunteers during the Ebola outbreak.

The current Ebola outbreak is the worst global public health emergency of our generation, and our global health care community must and will rise to serve those affected. Aid organizations participating in the Ebola response must carefully plan to carry out their responsibility to ensure the health, safety, and security of their responders. At the same time, individual health care workers and their employers must evaluate the ability of an aid organization to protect its workers in the complex environment of this unheralded Ebola outbreak. We present a minimum set of operational standards deve

Laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) renal cyst decortication during Pacific Partnership humanitarian assistance mission.

We describe the first laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) performed during a U.S. Navy humanitarian assistance mission. In conjunction with host nation surgeons, we performed a LESS renal cyst decortication in a 72-year-old woman during Pacific Partnership aboard the USNS Mercy (T-AH19). LESS procedures during humanitarian assistance missions offer advantages of rapid recovery and minimal convalescence. This case illustrates an innovative way to transfer technology and techniques between mission personnel and host nation providers during missions designed to build stronger relationship

Donor motivation in Xi'an, China: comparison with Canadian donors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In China, paid donation is prohibited by law. There is little literature assessing donor motivation in China, and comparison with western countries such as Canada is important in understanding the application of Western literature. We compared motivational factors in donors from the city of Xi'an, China, with Canadian donors matched for age, sex and donation status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 218 donors in Xi'an completed an interview about motivation as did 218 Canadian donors matched for age, sex and donation status. Frequencies and percentages of responses

Empathic Concern for Violators Modulates Victims' Evaluation of Third-Party Punishment Outcomes: Behavioral and EEG Evidence.

When fairness conflicts with empathy-induced altruism, victims often reduce punishment to protect violators' welfare. Whether this influence extends to outcome evaluations when punishment is implemented by third parties remains unclear. We combined an adapted Third-Party Dictator Game with electroencephalography (EEG) to address this. Participants received unfair allocations from violators and evaluated third-party punishment (TPP) outcomes. Empathic concern was induced by portraying violators as being in need. Behaviorally, victims in the empathy (vs. non-empathy) condition rated no-punishmen…

Ethical frameworks and community engagement in HIV cure-related research at the end of life: looking back, moving forward.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: HIV cure-related research at the end-of-life has created a rare opportunity to study viral persistence in tissues that cannot be safely or repeatedly sampled during life. This review examines ethical frameworks and community engagement approaches in this field from 2016 to 2026, with attention to potential new scientific directions and implementation across diverse settings. RECENT FINDINGS: The literature has developed important recommendations on informed consent, autonomy, dignity, altruism, patient-participant-centeredness, next-of-kin/loved one involvement, staff coord…

Non-invasive dual-brain stimulation facilitates social cooperation through enhancing interpersonal neural synchronization.

Reciprocal altruism-based cooperation is ubiquitous among humans and plays a crucial role in the survival and evolutionary trajectories of human beings. Prior research has been capable of comprehending social cooperation by examining the patterns of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during real bidirectional social interactions, rather than focusing on single-brain responses to external stimuli. However, the causal influence of INS on cooperative strategic behaviors remains unclear. To address this gap, we directly modulated the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ)'s INS between indi…
