First report of canine rangeliosis in domestic dogs from different regions of Santa Catarina State, Brazil.

Rangeliosis is the disease caused by Rangelia vitalii, a parasite reported in dogs from southeastern and southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina. This protozoan is transmitted by the ixodid Amblyomma aureolatum, and infects erythrocytes, leukocytes, and vascular endothelial cells of the host. The common clinical signs, such as prostration, fever, anemia, thrombocytopenia, anorexia, weight loss, and dehydration, are also found in other infections, like canine babesiosis and ehrlichiosis. The similar clinical presentation with other diseases, as well as the indistinguishable morphology…

Rickettsia rickettsii transmission by a lone star tick, North Carolina.

Only indirect or circumstantial evidence has been published to support transmission of Rickettsia rickettsii by Amblyomma americanum (lone star) ticks in North America. This study provides molecular evidence that A. americanum ticks can function, although most likely infrequently, as vectors of Rocky Mountain spotted fever for humans.

Dermoscopy for tick bite: reconfirmation of the usefulness for the initial diagnosis.

Ticks transmit a variety of infectious diseases. Diagnosis requires verification of a tick's presence. Here, we describe a 61-year-old woman bitten by an eight-legged nymphal Amblyomma testudinarium. We re-emphasize the usefulness of dermoscopy for identifying signs of the bite and determining the species of the biting tick.

Detection of a new Borrelia species in ticks taken from cattle in Southwest Ethiopia.

We collected 284 ticks in Ethiopia (109 Amblyomma cohaerens, 173 Rhipicephalus decoloratus, and 2 Rhipicephalus praetextatus). We found no rickettsiae and bartonellae. In 7.3% of the A. cohaerens, we found a Borrelia sp. that may represent a new species distant from both relapsing fever group and Lyme borreliae.

Transmission of Hepatozoon americanum (Apicomplexa: Adeleorina) by ixodids (Acari: Ixodidae).

American canine hepatozoonosis (ACH) caused by Hepatozoon americanum Vincent-Johnson, Macintire, Lindsay, Lenz, Baneth, and Shkap is an emerging, often fatal, tick-borne protozoal disease of dogs in the United States of America. Dogs acquire infection by ingesting ticks that contain oocysts. To understand the invertebrate (definitive) host range of H. americanum, experiments were carried out using four ixodids, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille), Dermacentor variabilis Say, Amblyomma americanum (L.), and Amblyomma maculatum Koch. Laboratory-reared nymphal ticks were fed on dogs that were eit…

Epidemiological aspects of Rickettsia parkeri in the Atlantic forest biome of Espírito Santo state, Brazil.

Since 2010, a new rickettsiosis caused by Rickettsia parkeri, a species included in the spotted fever group (SFG) and transmitted by the tick Amblyomma ovale, has been described in Brazil. Considering that A. ovale does occur in the Espírito Santo state (ES), the present study aimed at preliminarily describing the epidemiology of R. parkeri in the Atlantic forest of this state. Between June 2016 and September 2018, 33 villages from nine municipalities of the ES were included in a study for the molecular detection and isolation of SFG rickettsiae from adult Amblyomma ticks collected on dogs wit…

Possible tick-borne human enterovirus resulting in aseptic meningitis.

Enterovirus-specific genetic sequences were isolated from two Amblyomma americanum tick pools. Identical genetic sequences were later obtained from cerebrospinal fluid of a patient with aseptic meningitis and a recent history of tick attachment. These observations suggest the possibility of an emerging tick-borne human enterovirus associated with aseptic meningitis.

Pericarditis associated with tick-borne Q fever.

A case of pericarditis associated with Q fever is described. Transmission was probably via an arthropod vector, which was most likely the kangaroo tick Amblyomma triguttatum. Complete recovery occurred in association with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents only. This is a rare presentation of Q fever implicating transmission by a novel vector.

Assessment of costs for implementation of park specific tick management plans for selected high-use recreational areas in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Tick-borne diseases are a major public health threat in the United States, with Lyme disease being the most commonly reported vector-borne disease. Tick-bite prevention is predominantly focused on education and the use of repellents. Currently, the use of tick control interventions is rare, particularly on public properties, in part because deployment costs can be difficult to determine. This study focused on New Jersey, where both Ixodes scapularis Say and Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) are common throughout much of the state and there is a high incidence of tick-borne diseases. …

Exploring the dynamic adult hard ticks-camel-pathogens interaction.

UNLABELLED: The ability of ticks to interact and adapt to different ecologies and hosts determines their vectorial competence for various pathogens; however, ticks-livestock-pathogens interaction studies are limited. With our ticks-hosts-pathogens interface studies, we found 14 species of hard ticks feeding on various livestock. Ticks showed a strong preference for one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius). The camel nostril was the most preferred predilection site. The most prevalent tick species on camels was Hyalomma rufipes. We found two novel Amblyomma gemma variants which are distinct both…

Detection of Bartonella DNA in Yellow Flies, Lone Star Ticks, and a Human Patient with Concurrent Evidence of Borrelia burgdorferi Infection in Northeast Florida, USA.

Background: Bartonella species and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) are emerging zoonotic pathogens. The vectors and frequency of infections with both pathogen groups in the southern United States is understudied. This study describes an investigation of Bartonella and Bbsl in yellow flies collected at a residence in northeast Florida, USA, that led to subsequent discoveries of both organisms in lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) and a human patient. Materials and Methods: DNA samples from flies, ticks, and human patient blood specimens were tested via polymerase chain reaction assay…

Effects of Silica-Based CimeXa and Drione Dusts Against Lone Star Tick (Ixodida: Ixodidae) on Cattle.

Ixodid ticks vector pathogens of humans, livestock, and wildlife, and occur in tropical and temperate regions worldwide. We used the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Ixodida: Ixodidae), as a model for other ixodid species, including the southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) (Ixodida: Ixodidae). We assessed the lethality of CimeXa, an inert silica-based desiccant dust, and Drione, a silica-based desiccant dust with pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO), against A. americanum larvae and nymphs on calves. CimeXa was highly lethal to larvae release…

Glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase gene (glpQ) of Borrelia lonestari identified as a target for differentiating Borrelia species associated with hard ticks (Acari:Ixodidae).

A glpQ ortholog was identified in DNA from Borrelia lonestari-positive Amblyomma americanum, providing further evidence that B. lonestari is more closely related to the relapsing fever group spirochetes than to borreliae that cause Lyme disease. This finding provides a basis for developing diagnostic assays to differentiate species of borrelia transmitted by hard ticks.

Identification of Babesia bovis and Cowdria ruminantium on the island of Unguja, Zanzibar.

Babesia bovis and Cowdria ruminantium were identified for the first time in cattle on Unguja Island, Zanzibar. B bovis is common and widespread, although clinical disease had not been diagnosed previously. The vector of heartwater, Amblyomma variegatum, is found throughout Unguja but C ruminantium appears to be more localised in distribution than B bovis.
