In a Danish multicenter study, 74 patients 20 to 75 years of age (mean age, 58.8 years) with transient global amnesia (TGA) without accompanying major neurological signs were studied. Over a follow-up period ranging from seven to 210 months (mean, 66.6 months) the observed rates of death and cerebrovascular morbidity were similar to those expected in the Danish population, matched for age and sex. Sixteen patients (22%) had further TGAs occurring one month to nine years after the original episode; the mean annual recurrence rate was 4.7%. We concluded that TGA without associated major neurolog

Sixteen patients, who had suffered only one episode of transient global amnesia and showed no clinically evident abnormalities in their follow-up, were examined with psychometric and memory tests. Deficits in verbal long-term memory and in verbal IQ were found. These observations seem to demonstrate that in transient global amnesia patients regarded as being 'normal' in their follow-up there is no complete recovery and the sequelae seem to conform to a definite pattern. Problems of nosology and localization are discussed.

On basis of 35 patients who have suffered from transient global amnesia the pathophysiological mechanisms of this syndrome are discussed. Our impression is that the primary cause of this syndrome is a transient ischemia of the hippocampus, an opinion common with most earlier authors. The possibility of a unilateral hippocampal disturbance resulting in transient global amnesia is discussed. We are inclined to regard the local hippocampal ischemia as arising from insufficiency of the anterior chorioidal artery and thus as a sequel of internal carotid insufficiency, which has earlier been proved

OBJECTIVES: Few case-control studies of first-ever transient global amnesia (TGA), transient ischemic attack (TIA) and normal controls have been performed to date. We aimed to assess the prevalence of cerebrovascular risk factors in a well defined population of TGA patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We undertook a retrospective and prospective community-based case-control study of 170 first-ever TGA, 170 first-ever TIA and 170 normal controls.
RESULTS: Age-matched analysis revealed that TGA cases had a significantly lower prevalence of atrial fibrillation and diabetes mellitus than TIA controls

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a benign and transient condition with a sudden short-term amnesia. One of the conditions resembling TGA is hippocampal infarction, which requires relapse prevention treatments. In this report, we present a case with bilateral hippocampal infarction in whom distinguishing these two conditions was difficult for up to 1 week from the onset. A 60-year-old female visited our hospital with sudden onset retrograde and anterograde amnesia. Thin-slice magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with 2-mm thickness revealed hyperintense signals on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)

BACKGROUND: Choline was frequently reported to have some beneficial effects on memory function. However, the association of dietary choline with different types of amnesia is not well understood. The objective of this study was to examine the association between dietary intake of choline and transient global amnesia (TGA).
METHODS: This case-control study was carried out on 258 patients with TGA and 520 participants without amnesia. Data on dietary choline intake was collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). All participants were examined for amnesia by a neurologist acc

BACKGROUND: We compared limbic structure volumes and graph theory parameters of the limbic covariance network between patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) and healthy controls, and between patients with single and recurrent TGA events.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 122 patients with TGA (single event, n = 107; recurrent events, n = 15) and 50 healthy controls who underwent three-dimensional T1-weighted MRI imaging of the brain. Volumetric analysis of the subcortical limbic structures, including the hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, mammillary body, hypothalamus, basal forebrain,

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an acute amnestic disorder with unclear pathophysiology. Although considered a benign phenomenon, the possibility of a recurrence is a major concern for the patient. Our objective is to identify the prevalence and risk factors of relapse to help clinicians counsel patients about it.
METHODS: According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidance, we screened 1,658 studies from MEDLINE, Lilacs, and Embase databases, published from 1985 to April 2021, in English or Spanish. We included 36 observat

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a syndrome characterized by anterograde amnesia with otherwise intact cognitive function, resolving within 24 h of onset, occurring in the absence of neurological changes. Recurrent episodes remain rare. We report an interesting case of recurrent episodes of TGA in a 63-year-old woman presenting with altered mental status. She had no memory of antecedent events and demonstrated repetitive questioning but retained awareness of self. Physical examination and laboratory diagnostics were unremarkable. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed scattered foci of inc

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate alterations in structural covariance network and effective connectivity of the intrahippocampal circuit in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). We also investigated whether there were differences of them according to recurrence.
METHODS: We enrolled 88 patients with TGA and 50 healthy controls. We classified patients with TGA into two groups: the single event group (N = 77) and recurrent events group (N = 11). We performed volumetric analysis using the FreeSurfer program and structural covariance network analysis based on the structural volumes u

Some recent authors have claimed that Théodule-Armand Ribot described transient global amnesia in the nineteenth century in his monograph, Diseases of memory, An examination of this work was undertaken to determine whether or not this claim is true. Whilst Ribot cites Koempfen's thorough report of a case of transient amnesia, dating from 1835, this does not conform to current understanding of transient global amnesia.

Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is a glycolytic enzyme, which is associated with neuronal cell dysfunction in the brain. This study evaluated the role of serum NSE levels of patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). In addition, the relationship between serum NSE levels and the clinical features of TGA was explored. Forty-eight patients with TGA were prospectively included, and their serum NSE levels were measured. We investigated serum NSE levels in patients with TGA. In addition, we analyzed the differences in clinical characteristics between patients with elevated and normal serum NSE lev
