The advent of microsurgery has allowed the replantation of traumatically amputated limbs. Replantation of a severed limb to the contralateral stump in bilateral traumatic amputation, however, is rarer, and criticisms include a prolonged hospital stay and complications. A 54-year-old man was caught in a paper-pulping machine and suffered bilateral lower limb amputation rendering his left lower leg unsalvageable. The right lower leg, after debridement however, was suitable for replantation to the left stump. This replantation was performed successfully. The patient was rehabilitated with a contr

To evaluate the potential of the atelocollagen tube as a cap for amputation neuromas, the histological and histochemical characteristics of the neuroma and spinal cord were compared with those following silicone capping. Four weeks after the transection of 18 rat sciatic nerves, the amputated neuroma was resected, and the nerve stump inserted into an atelocollagen or silicone tube. The histological changes in the nerve ends and c-fos expression in the dorsal horn of the fourth lumbar spinal cord were evaluated at 4 weeks postoperatively. The regenerated nerve structure in the atelocollagen or

Previous studies have shown that phantom limb pain following major amputation reaches its greatest severity 2 to 3 weeks following amputation; it then gradually diminishes over subsequent months and years. Transient episodes of severe phantom limb pain are sometimes temporally related to specific activities such as urination, sexual intercourse, or local pressure applied to the amputation stump. Also, neuroma formation may be associated with transient episodes of increased discomfort usually associated with the application of local pressure. Phantom limb pain progressively increasing over an e

One hundred and one patients with through-knee amputations attending the Manchester limb-fitting centre are reviewed. Most amputations were performed for trauma or vascular disease. The interval from amputation to measurement for the first prosthesis averaged 12 weeks in cases of primary healing, and 21 weeks when healing was delayed. Artificial limbs were successfully fitted to 83%, and only 10% failed to use either a limb or a pylon. Three-quarters of those with outdoor mobility returned to work.Disarticulation through the knee has several advantages over above-knee amputation: in particular

In order to verify the effectiveness of neural stump buried into the muscle in the prevention and treatment of neuroma, 17 cases were reported, in which 8 cases having 19 painful neuromas and 9 cases having 13 amputated meural stumps, buried into muscle. They wese followed up for 6 months to 40 months, It was shown that good and excellent results were obtained and no evidence of neuroma was observed in all cases except in one which had painful neuroma occurred from the failure of embedment of the neural stump into the muscle. The conclusion was that the neural stump buried into muscle was an e

This case report presents the successful arthroscopic resection of capsular hypertrophy in a 33-year-old female who underwent through-the-knee amputation following trauma. A minimally invasive surgical approach that has not yet been described in the literature for soft tissue hypertrophy at the amputation stump. The patient experienced persistent irritation and pain in the medial femoral condyle despite well-fit orthosis adjustments. Previous conservative treatments were unsuccessful. Given the patient’s complex history and risk of wound healing complications, an arthroscopic approach via the
