Evaluation of donor vasculobiliary anatomic variations in liver graft procurements.

BACKGROUND: The relationship among bile duct (BD), portal vein (PV), and/or hepatic artery (HA) anatomy is controversial, but no investigation has previously compared left and right liver graft transplantation in terms of variant vasculobiliary anatomy. Therefore, in this study, we explored whether variant BD anatomy can be predicted from portal PV or HA anatomy, and we compared left and right liver graft transplantation from the standpoint of vasculobiliary reconstruction. METHODS: The associations between BD and PV and/or HA anatomies were evaluated in 361 donors. The number of vasculobilia

When one-size-doesn't-fit-all: The emerging role of customized 3D stents.

Non-malignant airway stenoses remain major challenges in interventional pulmonology, particularly when long-term stenting is required. Although conventional silicone airway stents effectively restore patency, their standardized geometry often fails to accommodate patient-specific airway anatomy, leading to migration, granulation tissue formation, mucus plugging, and repeated bronchoscopic interventions that limit long-term tolerance and efficacy. Advances in high-resolution imaging and modeling, and additive manufacturing have enabled the emergence of patient-specific, 3D-engineered silicone a

First photon-counting detector computed tomography in the living crocodile: a 3D-Imaging study with special reference to amphibious hearing.

BACKGROUND: Crocodiles are semi-aquatic animals well adapted to hear both on land and under water. Currently, there is limited information on how their amphibious hearing is accomplished. Here, we describe, for the first time, the ear anatomy in the living crocodile using photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) and 3D rendering. We speculate on how crocodiles, despite their closed ear canals, can use tympanic hearing in water that also provides directional hearing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) underwent photon-counting detector computed tomograp

Assessment of Visual Quality Improvement as a Result of Spectacle Personalization.

Personalized spectacles customized according to an individual's facial anatomy were developed to provide enhanced visual performance and overall comfort when compared to standard spectacles. In this comparative crossover trial, each subject was randomly assigned to wear either personalized spectacles or standard spectacles for two weeks and then tried the second pair for another two weeks. Visual acuity and reading speed were measured, and visual quality and comfort were assessed using specific questionnaires. The correlation of the wearing parameters with the subjects' satisfaction was calcul

Swartkrans Paranthropus and Sterkfontein Australopithecus from southern Africa had different locomotor repertoires.

Southern African hominin fossils traditionally attributed to Paranthropus robustus and Australopithecus africanus are differentiated from each other by their dentition and cranial architecture, but their postcranial anatomy has typically been regarded functionally as broadly similar (i.e., terrestrial bipedalism with some degree of arboreal locomotion). Testing the hypothesis of a similar locomotor repertoire between these two taxa has been complicated by a lack of postcranial fossils attributable to P. robustus. Here, we detail our comparative examination of the internal bone anatomy of a rec

The Cloacal Interest Group: From clinical observation to translational science.

The study of cloacal exstrophy has traditionally relied on detailed anatomical observations derived from clinical practice. In the 1980s, a collaborative review of 34 cloacal exstrophy cases led to the development of a novel grid-based system that transformed descriptive anatomy into a structured framework for phenotypic classification and revealed important relationships between bowel, bladder, and genital development. Nearly four decades later, this unique archival collection was rediscovered and recognized as a valuable resource for modern translational investigation. A pivotal interaction

Challenges and complications in secondary rhytidectomies, a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The demand for secondary rhytidectomies is increasing. These procedures are technically more demanding than primary surgery due to postsurgical anatomical changes, presenting unique challenges and risks. The objective of this systematic review is to define these challenges, describe common surgical principles, and summarize the reported outcomes and complications of secondary rhytidectomies. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on PubMed and Scopus using particular keywords. Inclusion criteria included randomized controlled trials, observational studies, comparative studies,

A review of rabbit models of meibomian gland dysfunction and scope for translational research.

Dry eye disease (DED) is an emerging global health concern with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) being the most common subtype of DED. Despite being quite prevalent, the pathophysiological mechanisms governing MGD are poorly understood. Animal models for MGD can be a valuable resource to advance our understanding of this entity and explore novel diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Although a lot of literature on rodent MGD models exists, a comprehensive review on rabbit animal models is lacking. Rabbits offer a great advantage over other animals as models for studying both DED and MGD. Rab

Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD): update 2023.

The Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD; http://ctdbase.org/) harmonizes cross-species heterogeneous data for chemical exposures and their biological repercussions by manually curating and interrelating chemical, gene, phenotype, anatomy, disease, taxa, and exposure content from the published literature. This curated information is integrated to generate inferences, providing potential molecular mediators to develop testable hypotheses and fill in knowledge gaps for environmental health. This dual nature, acting as both a knowledgebase and a discoverybase, makes CTD a unique resource for

Detailed comparison of anatomy and airflow dynamics in human and cynomolgus monkey nasal cavity.

Nonhuman primates are occasionally used as laboratory models for sophisticated medical research as they bear the closest resemblance to humans in morphometry and physiological functions. A range of nonhuman primate species have been employed in the inhalation toxicity, nasal drug delivery and respiratory viral infection studies, and they provided valuable insight to disease pathogenesis while other laboratory animals such as rodents cannot recapitulate due to the lesser degree of similarity in metabolism, anatomy and cellular response to that of humans. It is anticipated that nonhuman primate

The Konakondla-Telfeian-Shen (KTS) Pyramid: a safe entry zone for ventral thoracic pathologies.

BACKGROUND: Transforaminal (TF) endoscopic access to the lumbar spine has long relied on Kambin's triangle as a posterolateral safe zone. As endoscopic indications expand, there are fundamental differences in thoracic anatomy that Kambin's triangle does not account for, including smaller foraminal dimensions, the presence of the spinal cord, cranio-caudal pedicle angulation, and the rib head-costovertebral complex. To date, no formal anatomic framework exists to standardize thoracic TF planning. The objective of this study is to define and describe a three-dimensional thoracic TF working corri

Do nectary morphology, anatomy, and nectar production differ between two Salvia taxa with contrasting floral traits and floral visitor assemblages?

Floral nectaries are specialized structures that secrete nectar, a key floral reward mediating plant-pollinator interactions. Although floral morphology and nectar traits have been moderately studied in Salvia, the detailed structure and anatomy of nectaries remain less explored, limiting our understanding of their diversity and functional variation. This study compares the nectary accessibility, morphology, anatomy, and nectar production of two Salvia taxa with different floral traits and floral visitor assemblages: S. uliginosa and the the sterile hybrid cultivar S. 'Amistad'. Both possess a

When Should We Perform Intraoperative Cholangiography? A Prospective Assessment of 1000 Consecutive Laparoscopic Cholecystectomies.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) has been historically used to detect common bile duct (CBD) stones, delineate biliary anatomy, and avoid or promptly diagnose bile duct injuries (BDIs) during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). We aimed to determine the usefulness of routine IOC during LC in an urban teaching hospital. METHODS: A consecutive series of patients undergoing LC with routine IOC from 2016 to 2018 was prospectively analyzed. Primary outcomes of interest were: CBD stones, BDI, and anatomical variations of the biliary tract. Secondary outcomes of interest were: IOC suc

The efferent system of cranial nerve nuclei: a comparative neuromorphological study.

A number of inconsistencies and controversies are inherent in the classification of cranial nerve nuclei based on the concepts of the various head-theories. The assumption of head segmentation, which is common to these theories, serves as the basis for designating the dorsomedial nuclei as the somatomotor column, although they innervate striated muscles of a viscus and a specific sense organ. The ventrolateral nuclei are called the specific visceromotor column; they innervate striated muscles in the branchiogenous area, but many of these muscles insert on skeletal elements. A series of compara

The vascular anatomy and harvesting of the medial femoral condyle flap in pigs.

INTRODUCTION: Clinically, there has been increasing employment of the medial femoral condyle flap. Pigs have been employed as a model of the medial femoral condyle flap. However, related anatomical studies from the perspective of comparative medicine are rare. The objective of this study was to explore the vascular anatomy of the medial femoral condyle in pigs, explore the surgical procedure of the medial femoral condyle flap in pigs, and compare the medial femoral condyle flap in pigs and humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 20 fresh cadaveric hindlimbs of hybrid pigs were used in this study. The

Turbinal bones are still one of the last frontiers of the tetrapod skull: hypotheses, challenges and perspectives.

Turbinals are bony or cartilaginous structures that are present in the nasal cavity of most tetrapods. They are involved in key functions such as olfaction, heat, and moisture conservation, as well as protection of the respiratory tract. Despite recent studies that challenged long-standing hypotheses about their physiological and genomic correlation, turbinals remain largely unexplored, particularly for non-mammalian species. Herein, we review and synthesise the current knowledge of turbinals using an integrative approach that includes comparative anatomy, physiology, histology and genomics. I

Pituitary incidentalomas: application of an evidence-based approach at the individual patient and population levels.

With the widespread use of imaging techniques, incidental discovery of clinically unsuspected pituitary adenomas is increasing in frequency and will increase further. The Endocrine Society Task Force on Pituitary Incidentalomas has developed practice guidelines which reflect the best available evidence combined with the opinions of experts in pituitary diseases. For incidental macroadenomas, evidence supporting comprehensive evaluation (for hyperfunction, hypopituitarism and anatomy) and management (whether surgical or careful follow-up) is strong. By contrast, evidence supporting approaches t

Techniques and challenges of the expanded endoscopic endonasal access to the ventrolateral skull base during the "far-medial" and "extreme medial" approaches.

BACKGROUND: Expanding the ventrolateral skull base corridor from the midline of lower clivus to the petroclival fissure is a challenging endonasal surgical task. Resection of lytic lesions like chondrosarcoma can cause cranial nerve morbidities and injury of ICA, necessitating accurate knowledge of correlative endoscopic anatomy with stereotactic landmarks. METHODS: We describe an extended endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) for a right petroclival chondrosarcoma with the demonstration of ipsilateral surgical landmarks with contralateral normal correlates, using a stepwise comparative image-g

[Isolated luxation of the proximal tibio-fibular joint as a rare sports injury].

The authors present three cases of the rare isolated luxation of the fibular head. Anatomy, injuring mechanism and classification are described. The diagnosis is established by clinical examination and comparative X-ray radiography. If a luxation is irresponsible under general anesthesia (two of our cases), open reposition has to be performed with subsequent temporary nail or screw fixation. A postoperative immobilization with plaster cast on the thigh over a period of six months is necessary. After removal of the plaster cast, the material must immediately be removed in order to avoid complic
