Carbon monoxide is considered to be a major factor contaminating earth's atmosphere. The main sources producing this contamination are cars using gasoline or diesel fuel and industrial processes using carbon compounds; these two are responsible for 80% of carbon monoxide being emitted to the atmosphere. This substance has a well-known toxic effect on human beings and its acute poisonous effects (including death) have been widely studied; however, its long-term chronic effects are still not known. During the last few years, experimental research on animals and studies of human epidemiology have

Vipera aspis aspis (V.a.a.) is the most dangerous poisonous snake in South-Eastern France. The clinical symptoms observed after V.a.a. envenomations involve mostly local signs (pain, edema) associated in the more severe cases with systemic symptoms (gastro-intestinal and cardiovascular manifestations). Since 1992, several unusual cases of moderate and severe 'neurotoxic' envenomations by V.a.a. snakes have been reported in a very localized area in South-Eastern France. Most of the human patients mainly suffered neurological signs owing to cephalic muscle paralysis. Drowsiness and dyspnea were

It is shown that the increase of strontium content 1.5, 1.7, 2.0, 1.7, and 5.1 times, respectively, in the liver, kidneys, heart, muscles and bones of poisoned rats leads to the state of subcompensated metabolic acidosis in them. Experimental deepening of metabolic acidosis with per os introducing of chloride acid parallel with intramuscular injection of strontium chloride reduces the accumulation of strontium in the muscles and kidneys 1.6, in the liver - 1.5, in bones - 2.7 times. Introduction of rats into metabolic acidosis state after their poisoning with strontium causes acceleration of m

Mustard gas is known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects on animal and human cells. In this report, 1,632 male Japanese who worked in poison gas factories at some time between the years 1927 and 1945 were studied to determine comparative risk for development of cancer, the reference population being data on Japanese males overall. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for lung cancer in workers directly and indirectly involved in the production of mustard gas was significantly elevated. In addition, SMR for lung cancer in worker who had worked for more than 5 years was also significant

The effects of intravenously injected 4-dimethylaminophenol-HCl (DMAP), Co2EDTA, and Co(histidine)2 on the survival rate and several physiological parameters were studied on dogs after acute intravenous poisoning with the double lethal dose of potassium cyanide. All dogs survived when the antidotes were administered 1 min after poisoning. When the therapy began 4 min after poisoning more dogs were rescued in the DMAP group than in the cobalt groups. DMAP, Co2EDTA, and Co(histidine)2 restored circulation and respiration of the surviving animals in a similar manner. The increase in the plasma co

This paper presents the result of a 4 year survey in France (1991-1994) based on the activity of a wildlife disease surveillance network (SAGIR). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the detrimental effects of anticoagulant (Ac) rodenticides in non-target wild animals. Ac poisoning accounted for a very limited number of the identified causes of death (1-3%) in most species. Predators (mainly foxes and buzzards) were potentially exposed to anticoagulant compounds (especially bromadiolone) via contaminated prey in some instances. The liver concentrations of bromadiolone residues were elevat

In this research, we attempted to demonstrate whether and to what extent chronic cadmium poisoning influences lipid metabolism in the kidney and liver of rats. The presence of small quantities of cadmium was discovered in the kidneys and livers of normal animals. In the tested organs of cadmium-poisoned rats, a significant increase of the concentration of this element was observed, depending on the dose of the compound administered. Regarding lipid components, a reduced concentration of phospholipids and an increased level of free fatty acids were found in both kidney and liver. Such changes a

Mushroom toxicity is the main branch of foodborne poisoning, and liver damage caused by amatoxin poisoning accounts for more than 90 % of deaths due to mushroom poisoning. Alpha-amatoxin (α-AMA) has been considered the primary toxin from amatoxin-containing mushrooms, which is responsible for hepatotoxicity and death. However, the mechanism underlying liver failure due to α-AMA remains unclear. This study constructed animal and cell models. In the animal experiments, we investigated liver injury in BALB/c mice at different time points after α-AMA treatment, and explored the process of inflamma

A review of the health effects of cadmium is presented. Overexposure to cadmium produces numerous acute and chronic effects. Cases of acute poisoning resemble metal-fume poisoning. The first and most distinctive indication of chronic effects is renal tubular dysfunction characterized by proteinuria. Other chronic effects include liver damage, emphysema, osteomalacia, neurological impairment, testicular, pancreatic, and adrenal damage, and anemia. Tumorigenic effects have been observed in animals, and excessive prostatic and lung cancer has been observed in worker studies. In vitro and in vivo

The experiments presented in this paper brought out the following facts. Intramuscular injections of sodium oxalate into rabbits in doses of 0.18 and 0.2 gm. proved to be invariably fatal, death generally occurring in a comparatively short time. The symptoms consisted in excitation and tonic and clonic convulsions of diminishing strength if death was delayed. Some animals succumbed in the first convulsion. From the experiments in which magnesium or calcium was added, it was evident that massage of the site of the oxalate injection is unmistakably an aggravating factor. In the experiments with

INTRODUCTION: This is the 41st Annual Report of America's Poison Centers® National Poison Data System®. As of 1 January, 2023, all 55 of the nation's poison centers uploaded case data automatically to NPDS.
METHODS: We analyzed the case data, tabulating specific indices from the NPDS®. The methodology was as in previous years. Where changes were introduced, the differences are identified. Cases with medical outcomes of death were evaluated by a team of medical and clinical toxicologists using an ordinal scale of 1-6 to assess the Relative Contribution to Fatality of the exposure.
RESULTS: In

OBJECTIVE: LC-MS/MS-based metabolomics is an important tool for studying disease-related biomarkers. Conventionally, different strategies have been used to screen biomarkers. However, many studies for biomarker screening by different strategies have ignored the dose-response relationship between the biomarker level and exposure level, and no relevant studies have described and compared different strategies in detail. Phenobarbital (PHB) which belongs to the barbiturates, was selected as the typical representative of neurotoxins. Acylcarnitines have been promising candidates for diagnostic biom

OBJECTIVE: To detect MUC-1, VEGF-A, SP-D expression in lungs of rats at different times after the administration of baclofen and its combination with ethanol.
RESULTS: An increased MUC-1 expression has been noted in presence of the administration of baclofen and its combination with ethanol. MUC-1 caused an enhancement of VEGF-A expression under hypoxia, that has been also observed in all experimental groups. SP-D expression was increased in all experimental groups.
CONCLUSIONS: Understanding of the processes that occur in lungs of animals in administration of baclofen and its combination wi

Painless acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis, manifested only by an ileus, is described in two of nine patients after ingestion of parathion, a poisonous anticholinesterase insecticide. Other investigators have shown in animal experiments that parathion increases pancreatic intraductal pressure and stimulates pancreatic secretion. Such described cases may be designated pathologically as clinical examples of acute obstruction pancreatitis. Hemoperfusion is usually chosen to treat parathion intoxication, but carries the risk of causing hemorrhages in acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. Clinically, it is

Several thousand plant species, including many economically important food plants, synthesize cyanogenic glycosides and cyanolipids. Upon tissue disruption, these natural products are hydrolyzed liberating the respiratory poison hydrogen cyanide. This phenomenon of cyanogenesis accounts for numerous cases of acute and chronic cyanide poisoning of animals including man. This article reviews information gathered during the past decade about the enzymology and molecular biology of cyanogenesis in higher plants. How compartmentation normally prevents the large-scale, suicidal release of HCN within

Background and objective Poisoning remains a significant public health concern in underdeveloped countries, particularly among young adults. Intentional poisoning is increasingly recognized as a manifestation of psychological distress and difficulty coping with daily stressors; however, data on the psychiatric aspects of poisoning are limited. This study aimed primarily to identify psychiatric comorbidities and psychosocial stressors associated with poisoning. Secondary objectives included describing the sociodemographic characteristics, clinical profile, types of poisoning, and clinical outco

Metals have been used for many centuries, but their nutritional and toxic effects have been investigated since the last century. The common toxic heavy metals (THM) include mercury, lead, chromium cadmium, and arsenic. As human exposure to THM increasingly causes systemic and organ complications, it seems required to review the recent advances of treatment of the toxic metals. Despite the current knowledge of the hazards of heavy metals, there is still high incidents of their poisonings particularly in developing countries. In this review, after an introduction, we briefly describe the routes

Eutrophication phenomena in marine coastal waters can today be explained on the basis of natural or anthropogenic causes. Undesirable effects and also sanitary problems in both types of eutrophication are often produced, but they may differ greatly in frequency and significance. Some algal biotoxins can affect both marine animals and man, whilst others affect man alone. From data currently available it appears that the sanitary state of man can be affected through the digestive, respiratory and cutaneous apparatus. Four main dinoflagellate biointoxications are now recognized: paralytic shellfi

INTRODUCTION: Carbon monoxide (CO) is a leading cause of environmental poisoning in the United States with substantial mortality and morbidity. The mechanism of CO poisoning is complex and includes hypoxia, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Currently both biomarkers and therapies for CO poisoning are limited and require new approaches.
METHODS: Rats (~ 300 g) were divided into four groups of ten rodents per group (exposure): Control (room air), CO-400 (400 ppm), CO-1000 (1000 ppm) and CO-2000 (2000 ppm). Rodents received the assigned exposure through a secured tracheotomy tube over

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Exposure to cyanide in fires and industrial exposures and intentional cyanide poisoning by terrorists leading to mass casualties is an ongoing threat. Current treatments for cyanide poisoning must be administered intravenously, and no rapid treatment methods are available for mass casualty cyanide exposures. Cobinamide is a cobalamin (vitamin B(12)) analog with an extraordinarily high affinity for cyanide that is more water-soluble than cobalamin. We investigate the use of intramuscular cobinamide sulfite to reverse cyanide toxicity-induced physiologic changes in a sublethal c
