The prevalence of grooved tongue, geographic tongue, and ankyloglossia, was investigated in 660 children, 3 to 13 years old, which attended the Out patient Clinic of the University Hospital of Buenos Aires for unrelated complaints. The figures obtained are at variance--by far--from those published by other people engaged in the same line of research. Probably, further studies with a much larger amount of patients are called for.

A 15-year-old girl, operated upon (surgical ankyloglossia) at birth for glossoptosis due to Pierre Robin's syndrome provoking respiratory distress, presented with lithiasis of Wharton's duct. The pathogenesis of the lithiasis is considered to be related to the wounds and scars following the sublingual surgery, findings in this case also strongly suggesting the role of mechanical and inflammatory factors in the etiology of salivary gland lithiasis in general.

OBJECTIVE: Ankyloglossia is characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenulum, which impairs tongue movement. Ankyloglossia has been related to craniofacial growth disturbances and dental malocclusion. But even though there is a clear biological plausibility for this hypothesis, available evidence is scarce.
METHODS: A case-control design was followed. Patients between 4 and 14 years old were routinely screened for short lingual frenulum and recruited from the pediatric Otolaryngology consultation of 3 Spanish tertiary referral hospitals. Lingual frenulum was assessed with the Marchesan s…

OBJECTIVE: To describe oral alterations in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS).
METHODS: This was a case series, whose research in … f phenobarbital use. Enamel hypoplasia was identified in 9 children (28.1%) and only one child with ankyloglossia.
CONCLUSION: CZS may present delayed chronology of eruption, ankyloglossia, ogival-shaped palate, and enamel hypoplasia, requiring dental follow-up aimed at prevention, promotion, and rehabilitation of the health of these children.

Mutations in the TBX22 gene have been identified recently in patients with the X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia syndrome, suggesting that the TBX22 transcription factor plays an important role in palate development. However, because ankyloglossia has been reported in the majority of patients with TBX22 mutations, it has been speculated that the cleft palate phenotype is secondary to defective fetal tongue movement. To understand the role of TBX22 in disease pathogenesis and in normal development, it is necessary to carry out a detailed temporal and spatial gene expression analysis. We r…

For some children with a diagnosis of Robin syndrome the conservative treatment will not be sufficient due to recurrent glossoptosis and acute obturation of the airways which leads to asphyxia. The risk for children with this complication is so serious that it needs emergency surgical treatment. Its aim is an artificial ankyloglossia. However, often it fails when the stitches cut through. The technique of tongue fixation presented in this paper has proved successful.

OBJECTIVE: The G/BBB syndrome is an X-linked recessive disorder characterized by eye anomalies, laryngotracheoesophageal cleft, congenital h … trol group; 11 patients presented incisiform supernumerary teeth in the mandibular anterior region. Ankyloglossia was observed in 11 of 21 patients.
CONCLUSION: The presence of mandibular anterior supernumerary teeth and ankyloglossia should be investigated in the clinical evaluation of patients with suspected diagnosis of the G/BBB syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Clinical diagnosis of ankyloglossia and its therapeutic management through lingual frenotomy (LF) have increased in several countries. However, systematic reviews (SRs) and experts opinions show conflicting results on this topic.
AIM: To synthesize the available knowledge with a critical evaluation of SRs on LF in infants up to 1 year of age on breastfeeding-related outcomes.
DESIGN: An umbrella review was carried out. Searches were conducted (seven electronic databases, gray literature). SRs of clinical trials involving infants up to 1 year of age undergoing LF to treat maternal…

We report on a newborn with ankyloglossia inferior, micrognathia, and bilateral apodia. The tongue was small and adherent to the floor of the mouth. It has been proposed that oromandibular-limb hypogenesis sequences are due to an interruption of embrionic blood supply. Interruption or reduction of uterine artery blood flow appear to be pharmacologically or physically induced. In our case, there was no prenatal history of chorionic villus sampling, of drug or teratogens exposure, and of intrauterine infections.

Objectives: Early observations often fail to detect anomalies that may impact the health and quality of life of newborns. This study aimed t … nodules and dental lamina cysts, while no cases of natal teeth or congenital epulis were observed. Ankyloglossia was identified in 1.36% of newborns. No significant correlations were found between the presence of oral anomalies and sex, birth weight, maternal age, or gestational factors. Conclusions: The high prevalence (72.3%) of oral anomalies in the studied …

INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly in which the lingual frenulum is unusually short and thick, thus decreasing tongue mobility. In the context of the newborn or young infant it is a subject of ongoing controversy within and between medical specialties. The controversy involves not only the definition but also the management of this anomaly. A tight lingual frenulum is considered a minor malformation by some investigators. Usual treatments for ankyloglossia include speech therapy, as well as simple frenulotomy and frenuloplasty. The aim of this study was to compare the latter t…

Median cleft deformities of the lower lip and mandible are very rare congenital anomalies. Our patient had median cleft of the lower lip, mandible, and the chin with tongue duplication, ankyloglossia, and cleft strap muscles with 2 neck contracture bands. This anomaly was associated with congenital heart disease transposition of great vessels, large ventricular septal defect, and severe pulmonary stenosis. Early repair was done at 6 months to improve feeding.

A total of 6,180 Argentinian school-age children were examined clinically for the presence of oral congenital anomalies. The following prevalence figures were found: commissured lip pits (0.7%), ankyloglossia (0.1%), geographic tongue (1.5%), localized enamel hypomaturation (2.8%), median rhomboid glossitis (0.10/00), torus palatinus (0.30/00) and dentinogenesis imperfecta (0.30/00). Data are presented for the first time on snowcap amelogenesis imperfecta with a prevalence value of 0.1%.

AIM: In this study we present the new postoperative oro-myofunctional protocol following frenectomy by atmospheric plasma associated with a systemic postural approach, which determines functional recovery through body symmetry restoration based on the concepts of the French "Mezieres Method" and postural bench.
METHODS: A total of 130 patients (76 female, 54 male) affected by ankyloglossia of class III/IV, according to Kotlow's Tongue Tie Classification have been treated with atmospheric plasma followed by oro-myofunctional therapy associated with a systemic postural approach. The overall cha…

Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenulum resulting in varying degrees of difficulty of tongue mobility. It may be asymptomatic or it may present with breastfeeding difficulties, speech and dentition disorders, and social problems related to the functional limitation of the tongue. While it is a common and known pathology, controversies and diversity of opinions persist regarding the indication, timing and method of surgical correction. We describe our experience with 35 children presenting this condition; they underwent successful surgical tre…
