In this study, we report a 15-year-old female with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis, who admitted with acute respiratory failure and generalized edema. Abdominal tomography detected thrombi in the right renal vein, in the hepatic segment of the inferior vena cava and in iliac veins. Levels of proteins C and S, antinuclear antigen, anti-dsDNA, C3, and C4 were in normal limits. The thrombi persisted despite treatment with nadroparin, heparin with fresh frozen plasma and warfarin. Due to heparin resistance, antithrombin III levels were measured and were found abnormally low. The fi

INTRODUCTION: Antithrombin (AT), protein C (PC) and protein S (PS) deficiencies are risk factors for venous thromboembolism. Overlapping values between heterozygous carriers and normal individuals often make a correct classification of a deficiency difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sex, age, menopause and hormone therapy on natural anticoagulant plasma levels in a large group of healthy individuals, and to evaluate the need of separate reference ranges.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: AT and PC were measured with a chromogenic assay, antigenic free PS with an ELISA test

BACKGROUND: Restoration of blood flow to an acutely ischemic limb can trigger systemic inflammation. We investigated whether antithrombin III (AT-III) exerts a protective action against remote lung and myocardial injury in an experimental animal model of lower-limb ischemia-reperfusion.
METHODS: Ischemia was induced by lower-limb arterial occlusion for 6 hours in 60 male Wistar rats. Animals were divided into those receiving AT-III (dose, 250 mg/kg) 30 minutes before the reperfusion (group A, n = 30) and those receiving placebo (group B, n = 30). Animals were then sacrificed, and lung and myo

Despite being widely reported in patients with neoplasms, vena cava superior (VCS) syndrome linked to thrombosis is a major catheter complication that can be encountered during the use of the hemodialysis catheter. Antithrombin III (AT-III), responsible for a large part of thrombin inactivation capacity in plasma, is the most powerful inhibitor of the thrombosis process. This report describes a case of VCS syndrome developing two weeks following the extraction of a right-sided subclavian catheter in a patient transferred from peritoneal dialysis to hemodialysis for one week due to leakage. Trisomy 8 is the most common acquired chromosomal abnormality associated with myeloid malignancy. As a constitutional trisomy 8 mosaicism (T8M), it exhibits an extremely variable phenotype. In addition, Behcet disease (BD) has been reported as an unusual complication of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). To our knowledge, 12 case reports of various hematologic malignancies in patients with T8M and 18 case reports of MDS with acquired trisomy 8 complicated by BD have been published to date. We report a case of constitutional T8M with MDS complicated by intestinal BD and antithrombin III deficiency

PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate the suppressive effects of antithrombin (AT)III on inflammatory reactions during endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) in rats by studying leukocyte-endothelium interactions.
METHODS: EIU was induced in Lewis rats by footpad injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). ATIII was administered immediately after or at 6 hours after LPS injection. Its suppressive effects on inflammatory leukocyte behavior were evaluated in vivo with acridine orange digital fluorography. Clinical signs of inflammation were also examined, and aqueous humor (AH) was collected to e

We described the perioperative management of a patient with congenital antithrombin III deficiency using temporal inferior vena cava filter. A 30-year-old man with congenital antithrombin III deficiency was scheduled for artificial head replacement of the hip joint under general anesthesia. He was diagnosed as having congenital antithrombin III deficiency when he had had an episode of venous thrombosis after artificial head replacement of the right hip joint. He had been taking warfarin as an anticoagulant, and it was discontinued three days before surgery. To prevent perioperative thrombus fo

The presence or absence of venous thrombosis was determined by the technique of autologous 111indium-labelled platelets in 64 patients following reduction and fixation of fractures of the neck of femur. Venous thrombosis was found in 41 (64%) of these patients. Compared to the thrombosis-negative group, the thrombosis-positive group had a significantly lower mean serum antithrombin, and higher mean antithrombin consumption during clotting in the immediate preoperative period. No significant differences were seen between the two groups in plasma ATIII activities, fibrinogen, alpha-2-macroglobul

Incubation of human plasma antithrombin III with Crotalid, Viperid and Colubrid snake venoms resulted in the enzymatic inactivation of the inhibitor, as evidenced by a gradual loss of inhibitory activity against trypsin and thrombin. This indicates that proteinases which selectively inactivate antithrombin III are widespread among the families of poisonous snakes. The inactivation was due to metalloproteinases present in the venoms, since the reaction could be terminated by the addition of EDTA. Elapid venoms were tested and shown to be devoid of activity on antithrombin III. Preincubation of

Effects of estradiol, progesterone, cortisol, thrombophlebitis and typhoid vaccine on the synthesis and catabolism of antithrombin III (AT) in dogs were studied, using I-125-labeled AT (I-125-AT) as a tracer. Five dogs were used for each study. A single intramuscular injection of 20 mg estradiol caused a 20% decrease of plasma AT concentration in 6 days without appreciable changes in the plasma half-lives of I-125-AT but with a significant decrease in the fractional catabolic rate of I-125-AT(j3u). A single intramuscular injection of 250 mg progesterone did not produce any appreciable changes

Hypertension has paradoxical prothrombotic-hemorrhagic predisposition toward cerebral infarction and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), but the mechanism remains poorly understood. We observed Angiotensin II (Ang II) inhibited coagulation by activating antithrombin through heparin-like acceleration of antithrombin-thrombin interaction. Ang II allosterically modulates the 386-397 loop of antithrombin to enhance thrombin inhibition. In vivo, single injection of Ang II inhibited coagulation, alleviating thrombosis and aggravating ICH. Conversely, anti-Ang II monoclonal antibody promoted coagulation,
