Traumatic aniridia and aphakia after Artisan intraocular lens implantation.

Traumatic aniridia and aphakia occurred in the left eye of a 22-year-old man who had had Artisan (Ophtec) phakic intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Aniridia was probably the result of the relatively large wound used to implant the nonfoldable IOL. Although the eye had severe traumatic damage, vision was recoverable through a 2-stage procedure of vitrectomy and subsequent scleral suture fixation of an iris-diaphragm IOL.

Corneal perforation with secondary congenital aphakia in Peters anomaly.

PURPOSE: To describe two cases of secondary congenital aphakia in association with Peters anomaly. METHODS: Two infants were noted to have corneal opacification at birth. Each child was found to have Peters anomaly requiring corneal transplantation in 1 or both eyes. RESULTS: Each child underwent penetrating keratoplasty, revealing absence of the crystalline lens in 1 eye. Histopathologic evaluation of the corneal buttons was performed. Each specimen showed full-thickness corneal defects with lens remnants. CONCLUSIONS: Secondary congenital aphakia from corneal perforation should be conside…

[Intraocular correction of aphakia in patients after kidney transplantation].

It was for the first time in the ophthalmologic practice that a possibility was demonstrated to ensure relatively high and stable functional … tients with TK receiving the suppressor therapy. Clinical examinations denoted that the intraocular aphakia correction in patients with TK is a method of choice accelerating the medical and social rehabilitation in the discussed patients' category provided the therapeutic-and-diagnostic as well as preventive measures, as required by their status, are bein …

Black iris-diaphragm intraocular lens for aniridia and aphakia.

We present the first reported use in the United States of a black iris-diaphragm intraocular lens (IOL) for the treatment of traumatic aniridia and aphakic bullous keratopathy. The patient presented to a university-based practice with contact-lens-intolerant aniridia and aphakia with painful bullous keratopathy from a failed corneal graft. He was treated with combined penetrating keratoplasty and transscleral fixation of an aniridia IOL. The patient's preoperative symptoms of debilitating glare and photophobia resolved substantially after surgery, despite mild postoperative inflammation that r…

Visual functions in aphakia after secondary intraocular lens implantation.

21 aphakic eyes of 21 patients corrected by glasses (A-G) were examined 1 and 6 months before and after secondary intraocular lens implantation (SILI). Visual acuity (VA) was tested using Snellen chart and computerized method with Landolt rings (CL). Contrast sensitivity (CS) was measured using computerized Contrast sensitivity system 8010 in spatial frequencies from 0.74 to 29.55 c/deg. Preoperative best corrected VA (BCVA) in A-G eyes was significantly lower in comparison with control group of the same age only using computerized method with Landolt rings. A reduction of BCVA by both methods

[Principles in correcting unilateral aphakia to preserve binocular functions].

A new concept for correcting unilateral aphakia has been developed for patients able to accommodate. This concept is based on the investigations of binocular tolerance observed in aniseikonia. The test method for binocularity should have a retinal image of adequate size and should respond sensitively to limitation of vertical disparity. These criteria are satisfied by the TNO test for stereopsis. The retinal image size can be assessed using a spectacle-contact lens combination similar to an inverted Galilean telescope system. The image size can be reduced as long as the patient perceives posit…

[Correction of aphakia in cases of insufficient capsular bag stability].

A variety of situations can lead to the need for an alternative method of intraocular lens (IOL) fixation if implantation in the capsular bag is not possible. Depending on the situation, sulcus-fixated IOLs, iris-fixated IOLs (IFIOLs) and scleral-fixated IOLs (SFIOLs) are available. With SFIOLs, a distinction is made between suture-fixated and sutureless-fixated techniques. This paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches, including the newer methods of sutureless SFIOLs. The decision on a specific approach in the individual case depends on both the individual

Rare association of aniridia with congenital aphakia and secondary glaucoma.

Congenital aniridia is a rare ocular disorder characterized by iris malformation. We present a 3-year-old boy with bilateral anterior-segment dysgenesis, congenital aniridia, congenital aphakia, secondary glaucoma, limbal stem cell deficiency, and band keratopathy. As the intraocular pressure was uncontrolled with antiglaucoma medications, the patient underwent multiple bilateral traditional cyclophotocoagulation (CPC), in addition to micropulse CPC. To the best of our knowledge, aniridia association with congenital aphakia and congenital glaucoma has been very rarely reported.

Lack of FOXE3 coding mutation in a case of congenital aphakia.

PURPOSE: To report the findings in a patient with congenital primary aphakia, a rare disease known to be caused by mutations in the FOXE3 gene. METHODS: The clinical appearances and visual functions of the patient were determined from the medical records. Genetic analyses were performed to search for mutations in the FOXE3 gene by Sanger sequencing and whole exome sequencing. RESULTS: The 2-month-old male patient first presented with bilateral congenital aphakia associated with microphthalmia, corneal opacity, and dysplasia of the anterior segment. At the age of 2-years, his visual acuity in…

Management of traumatic aniridia and aphakia with an iris reconstruction implant.

We describe the clinical features and management of a 36-year-old man with aniridia and aphakia following blunt ocular trauma. Examination showed partial aniridia and aphakia. We discuss the various options available in the management of this patient and describe the surgical technique involved in the implantation of an iris reconstruction implant.
