Social influences on the acquisition of tool-using behaviors in tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).

To identify behaviors related to acquisition of tool-use in tufted capuchins (Cebus apella), we presented two tool-using tasks to two groups, extending findings by Westergaard and Fragaszy (1987) and Visalberghi (in press). Five Ss learned to use the tools in each task. The primary predictor of success was level of interest in the task. Observation of others at the apparatus did not facilitate exploratory behaviors or contact with the tools in the observers. Most animals performed exploratory behaviors more often when they were at the apparatus alone than when with another, whether or not the

Efficacy of 3 types of foraging enrichment for rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Primate facilities provide environmental enrichment to improve animal wellbeing, increase opportunities for expression of species-typical behaviors, and decrease the occurrence of stereotypic behaviors. The current study assessed the efficacy of 3 types of foraging enrichment: puzzle balls, supertubes, and shakers. We assigned 48 rhesus macaques to 3 experimental groups, each of which received (after a 3-wk baseline observation period) 1 of the 3 enrichment devices intermittently for 3 wk. Observations were collected during 10-min sessions by using 1-0 sampling with 15-s intervals (480 h total

Management of Hyperphagia and Obesity in Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the absence of paternally expressed imprinted genes on chromosome 15q11-13. Individuals with PWS typically experience feeding difficulties and a lack of appetite in infancy, followed by weight gain, uncontrolled appetite, and a lack of satiety. Hyperphagia in PWS is exacerbated by impaired satiety, low energy expenditure, and intellectual difficulties, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and/or autistic behaviors. Without rigorous external management of their eating behaviors, patients with PWS become severely obese and

Involvement of the sigma1 receptor in the appetitive effects of cocaine.

Cocaine induces in the brain a drastic plasticity affecting numerous neurotransmission systems. In turn, the drug provokes a complex pattern of behavioral responses, including locomotor hyperactivity, stereotyped behaviors, sensitization, and appetitive and reinforcing properties that rapidly generate the addictive process. The involvement of sigma (1) receptors in cocaine effects has been suggested initially through the observation that sigma (1) antagonists could attenuate several acute effects induced by the drug, such as hyperlocomotion, stereotypies, convulsions and lethality. We will des

The role of affect in the maintenance of anorexia nervosa: evidence from a naturalistic assessment of momentary behaviors and emotion.

The current study examines the relationship of affect and eating disorder behavior in anorexia nervosa (AN) using ecological momentary assessment. Participants were 118 adult females recruited at three sites from eating disorder treatment centers and community advertisements. All participants met full Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (4th ed.) criteria or subthreshold criteria for AN. Participants were provided handheld computers and asked to report positive affect, negative affect, loss of control (LOC) eating, purging, exercise, drinking fluids to curb appetite, and weig

Neural Basis of Ventromedial Hypothalamic Oxytocin-Driven Decrease in Appetite.

OBJECTIVES: Oxytocin (OT) administration in the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) reduces chow intake. The nature of VMH OT's anorexigenic action remains unclear. Here we provide insight into neural mechanisms underlying VMH OT-driven anorexia by (a) identifying feeding-related brain sites activated by VMH OT injection; (b) measuring VMH OT receptor (OTr) mRNA changes in response to hunger and palatability; and (c) examining how VMH OT affects episodic sweet solution intake in sated and hungry rats. METHOD: We established effective doses of VMH OT in deprivation-induced and scheduled fe

Progressive ratio responding in an obese mouse model: Effects of fenfluramine.

The progressive ratio schedule of operant responding is a well utilised task for assessing the rewarding aspects of abused drugs and natural rewards including food. Interestingly, progressive ratio paradigms have mainly been neglected in the field of animal research in obesity. Among the most widely studied mouse models of obesity is the leptin-deficient ob/ob mouse, characterised by hyperphagia and obesity. To date there are no studies on the behaviour of these mice in progressive ratio responding, thus we sought to validate the utility of the progressive ratio paradigm in obese mice and demo

Effect of toloxatone on behaviour of primates.

1. The effects of (3-methyl)-3-phenyl-5-hydroxy-methyl-2-oxazolidinone (toloxatone) were studied on the behaviour of three species of primates: baboon, rhesus monkeys and chimpanzee. 2. The activity against reserpine-induced depression is observed in baboon as in rodents. 2. The administration of toloxatone induces three effects which probably have the same origin: suppression of feeding inhibition of the subordinate baboon, improvement of escape reaction in the conditioned chimpanzee, increase in general activity and the active component of social behaviour in grouped rhesus monkeys. These th

Characterization of behavioral and emotional responses of male and female juvenile rats in the orofacial formalin test following acetaminophen treatment.

Children are frequently affected by acute pain conditions but are underrepresented in clinical trials. Likewise, data on preclinical models of orofacial pain in juvenile rats are scarce. The present study aimed to characterize sensory and emotional responses of male and female juvenile rats in the orofacial formalin test, as well as to investigate the effect of acetaminophen, due to its wide use in the pediatric population. Male and female Wistar rats (21-35 days) were treated with acetaminophen (100 mg/kg or 300 mg/kg), or vehicle systemically followed by injection of 2.5 % formalin or saline

Corticotropin-releasing factor in the nucleus accumbens shell induces swim depression, anxiety, and anhedonia along with changes in local dopamine/acetylcholine balance.

The nucleus accumbens shell (NAcS) has been implicated in controlling stress responses through corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). In addition to studies indicating that CRF in the NAcS increases appetitive motivation, there is indirect evidence suggesting that NAcS CRF may also cause aversive responses and that these behaviors may be mediated through local dopamine (DA) and acetylcholine (ACh) systems. To provide a direct test of this hypothesis, we used male Sprague-Dawley rats with implanted cannulas aimed at the NAcS. Experiment 1 showed local CRF injection (10 or 50 ng/side) to increase

Cellular and network mechanisms of operant learning-induced compulsive behavior in Aplysia.

BACKGROUND: Learning in exploratory and goal-directed behaviors can modify decision-making processes in the initiation of appropriate action and thereby transform the irregular and infrequent expression of such behaviors into inflexible, compulsive-like repetitive actions. However, the neuronal mechanisms underlying such learning-derived behavioral plasticity remain poorly understood. RESULTS: Appetitive operant conditioning, a form of associative learning, produces a long-lasting switch in the mollusk Aplysia's food-seeking behavior from irregular, impulsive-like radula biting movements into

Mice Develop Efficient Strategies for Foraging and Navigation Using Complex Natural Stimuli.

The ability to shift between multiple decision-making strategies during natural behavior allows animals to strike a balance between flexibility and efficiency. We investigated odor-guided navigation by mice to understand how decision-making strategies are balanced during a complex natural behavior. Mice navigated to odor sources in an open arena using naturally fluctuating airborne odor cues as their positions were recorded precisely in real time. When mice had limited prior experience of source locations, their search behavior was consistent with a gradient ascent algorithm that utilized dire

Hydroxamic acids in Secale cereale L. and the relationship with their antifeedant and allelopathic properties.

Contents of the hydroxamic acids 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIBOA), and 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA) in leaves and roots of 14 cultivars of rye, Secale cereale L., were determined. Dynamics of accumulation in three cultivars were evaluated. DIBOA was the main cyclic hydroxamic acid in leaves but the contents differed significantly between the cultivars. Both DIBOA and DIMBOA were present in the roots. Maximum concentration of DIBOA in leaves and DIMBOA in roots was reached between 48-54 h and 54-72 h after germination, respectively. Antifeedant activity of DIB

Vulnerability of bot fly (Cuterebra) infected Peromyscus maniculatus to shorttail weasel predation in the laboratory.

In the laboratory, Peromyscus bearing a single Cuterebra larva are no more vulnerable to weasel predation than are uninfected control mice, and may be taken less often under certain conditions. Mice bearing two or more larvae appear to be more vulnerable than either controls or singly infected mice. Their increased vulnerability probably results from their failure to use arboreal pathways. Decreased activity may be responsible for the relative advantage of singly infected mice. Previous reports of higher survivorship among mice with a single bot parasite than among uninfected mice, and of lowe

DRD1 and DRD2 dopamine-sensitive neurons in the central amygdala respond differently to rewarding and aversive stimuli.

The ability to differentiate between rewarding and aversive stimuli is crucial for survival, yet the underlying neural mechanisms allowing animals to make such a distinction remain elusive. Here, using in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, we uncovered how the activity of dopamine-sensitive neurons in the medial nucleus of the central amygdala (CeM) is associated with appetitive and aversive experiences. We found that cocaine and sucrose strongly activated DRD1(+) neurons while suppressing DRD2(+) activity, whereas the aversive quinine stimulus predominantly engaged DRD2(+) neurons, particularly

Should GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy be used to treat obesity in Bardet-Biedl syndrome?

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a complex genetic condition that can affect multiple organ systems, frequently causing pigmentary retinopathy, renal abnormalities, polydactyly, and obesity. Metabolic disturbances including obesity, unsuppressed appetite, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) present clinical management challenges. In this issue of the JCI, Singh et al. present a mouse model of a specific BBS subtype with genetic deletion of the Bbs5 gene. The model recapitulates many of the clinical features observed in patients living with BBS5 and sheds light on adipocyte biology, as

Roles of central catecholamine and hypothalamic neuropeptide Y genome in the development of tolerance to phenylpropanolamine-mediated appetite suppression.

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is an appetite suppressant. Repeated treatment with PPA can decrease food intake on initial days, but on subsequent days, food intake gradually returns to normal (tolerant effect). In an attempt to investigate the underlying mechanisms of PPA tolerance, the authors examined the roles of catecholamine (CAT) and hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY) genome. Results revealed that pretreatment with either bupropion, a CAT transporter inhibitor, or a-methylparatyrosine, a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor, modulated the effect of PPA tolerance. Moreover, results also revealed tha

Hungry for Knowledge: Octopamine Signaling Regulates Hunger-Enhanced Olfactory Learning.

Hunger, a state of nutrient deficiency, significantly enhances cognitive behaviors by heightening sensitivity to food-related stimuli. However, the mechanisms by which hunger influences olfactory learning remain unclear. In this study, it is shown that aversive or appetitive memory is formed faster in hungry C. elegans. These findings reveal that hunger-induced octopamine release from the interneuron RIC enhances both aversive and appetitive olfactory learning. By analyzing neural circuits downstream of RIC, two distinct pathways involved in memory formation are identified. For aversive learni
