Mortality and Functional Outcome Predictors in Combat-Related Penetrating Brain Injury Treatment in a Specialty Civilian Medical Facility.

INTRODUCTION: The combined use of new types of weapons and new types of personal protective equipment has led to changes in the occurrence, nature, and severity of penetrating brain wounds. The availability of modern equipment, methods of treatment, and trained medical personnel in a civilian hospital, as well as advanced specialty medical care, has improved treatment outcomes. There have been a limited number of publications regarding analysis and predictors of treatment outcomes in patients with combat-related penetrating brain injury in contemporary armed conflicts. The purpose of this stud…

Prevalence of, risk factors for, and consequences of posttraumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems in military populations deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

This review summarizes the epidemiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related mental health problems among persons who served in the armed forces during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, as reflected in the literature published between 2009 and 2014. One-hundred and sixteen research studies are reviewed, most of which are among non-treatment-seeking US service members or treatment-seeking US veterans. Evidence is provided for demographic, military, and deployment-related risk factors for PTSD, though most derive from cross-sectional studies and few control for combat exposure,

A framework for resolving the transboundary water allocation conflict conundrum.

This paper describes a methodology for resolving transboundary water disputes that arise when people/states/nations sharing a resource that crosses legal/political jurisdictions disagree about the use of the resource. Laws and treaties written in an attempt to settle disputes are frequently neither enforced nor effective, and disagreements continue. Crises, arising through resource overuse or shortages, worsen the conflict and typically result in further discord, lawsuits, depletion of the resource, and even open-armed hostility. Many water management experts call for either private/market-bas

Delivering trauma and rehabilitation interventions to women and children in conflict settings: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, more than 120 million people each year have needed urgent humanitarian assistance and protection. Armed conflict has profoundly negative consequences in communities. Destruction of civilian infrastructure impacts access to basic health services and complicates widespread emergency responses. The number of conflicts occurring is increasing, lasting longer and affecting more people today than a decade ago. The number of children living in conflict zones has been steadily increasing since the year 2000, increasing the need for health services and resources. This revie

Psychohistorical Hypotheses on Japan's History of Hostility Towards China.

The accelerating tensions and military posturing between Japan and China have created a serious crisis with a danger of a catastrophic war. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the events of the current crisis, and to put it in the context of Japan's long history of hostility to China and repeated attempts at conquest. The historical record shows that Japan has attacked China at least seven times, even though China has never attacked Japan. The irrationality of Japan's behavior is demonstrated by the repetition of this hostile behavior despite the enormous human and economic costs that Ja

A cross-sectional study of screened depression prevalence among Gaza war survivors who fled versus those who remained.

The escalating conflict in Gaza since October 2023 has caused an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, widespread destruction, and mass displacement, profoundly impacting mental health. While depression is prevalent in war-affected regions, Gaza shows exceptionally high rates, with some studies reporting up to 99.5% prevalence. Crucially, comparative studies directly examining depression prevalence between Gaza war survivors who remained and those who fled have been notably absent. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare screened depression prevalence among Gaza war survivors, specifically di

When formal governance persists but resilience does not: health system governance and resilience in Yemen across a decade of conflict and crisis (2014-2025).

BACKGROUND: Yemen's health system has faced prolonged shocks, including war, epidemics, and COVID-19, challenging both governance and resilience. This study examines how formal governance structures and institutional capacities shaped the system's ability to anticipate, absorb, adapt, learn, and transform across a decade of crisis (2014-2025). METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal qualitative analysis based on interviews with health system leaders and technical actors. Using a resilience-capacity framework, we analyzed governance functions across four phases: pre-conflict period (pre-2014), co
