In 1991 the American Psychiatric Association proposed a draft version of the IV edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disor … "Specific Developmental Disorders" is omitted. The suggestion is to include Phonological Disorder (Articulation Disorders) and Elective Mutism in the Speech and Language Disorders section.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The paper undertakes the topic of acoustic differences between normative and pathological articulation patterns in children. The analysis aimed to explore the impact of the place of articulation on the values of speech signal features in alveolar fricatives / , /.
METHODS: Normative (alveolar) pronunciation was compared to three atypical patterns: postalveolar, dental, and interdental. The presented analysis was conducted on our team's dataset of annotated productions collected from 187 preschool-aged children, the largest sample reported to date for the acoustic ana

Children with reading difficulties and children with a history of repeated ear infections (Otitis Media, OM) are both thought to have phonological impairments, but for quite different reasons. This paper examines the profile of phonological and morphological awareness in poor readers and children with OM. Thirty-three poor readers were compared to individually matched chronological age and reading age controls. Their phonological awareness and morphological awareness skills were consistently at the level of reading age matched controls. Unexpectedly, a significant minority (25%) of the poor re

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Cycles Phonological Remediation Approach as an intervention for children with speech sound disorders (SSD). A multiple baseline design across behaviors was used to examine intervention effects. Three children (ages 4;3 to 5;3) with moderate-severe to severe SSDs participated in two cycles of therapy. Three phonological patterns were targeted for each child. Generalization probes were administered during baseline, intervention, and follow-up phases to assess generalization and maintenance of learned skills. Two of the thr

PURPOSE: The intent of this study was to examine the longitudinal morpho-syntactic progression of children with Speech Sound Disorders (SSD) grouped according to Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) scores.
METHODS: Thirty-seven children separated into four clusters were assessed in their pre-kindergarten and Grade 1 years. Cluster 1 were children with typical development; the other clusters were children with SSD. Cluster 2 had good pre-kindergarten MLU; Clusters 3 and 4 had low MLU scores in pre-kindergarten, and (respectively) good and poor MLU outcomes.
RESULTS: Children with SSD in pre-kinder

This study directly compared four patients who, to varying degrees, showed the characteristics of deep dyslexia, dysphasia and/or dysgraphia--i.e., they made semantic errors in oral reading, repetition and/or spelling to dictation. The "primary systems" hypothesis proposes that these different conditions result from severe impairment to a common phonological system, rather than damage to task-specific mechanisms (i.e. grapheme-phoneme conversion). By this view, deep dyslexic/dysphasic patients should show overlapping deficits but previous studies have not directly compared them. All four patie

The aims of this study were (a) to determine whether Spanish children with reading disabilities (RD) show a speech perception deficit and (b) to explore the locus and nature of this perceptive deficit. A group of 29 children with RD, 41 chronological age-matched controls, and 27 reading ability-matched younger controls were tested on tasks of speech perception. The effect of linguistic unit (word vs. syllable) and type of phonetic contrast (voicing, place and manner of articulation) were analyzed in terms of the number of errors and the response time. The results revealed a speech perception d

Increasingly, children with Down syndrome receive literacy instruction based on a phonological awareness philosophy with the expectation of acquiring functional reading skills. Previous research demonstrates that a phonological awareness based reading programme delivers excellent results in terms of literacy acquisition and improvements in speech production for children with speech and language delays. Unfortunately, little research exists to support the effectiveness of this approach for children with Down syndrome. The current research study examined using a phonological awareness based inte

Percutaneous coronary intervention in severely calcified coronaries has been associated with higher rates of procedural complications, including myocardial infarction and death in addition to increased frequency of coronary revascularization on an intermediate and long-term basis. The SYNTAX score, which is designed to assess the complexity of coronary artery disease and aids in choosing a revascularization method, allocates two points per lesion when there is heavy calcification present on fluoroscopy. With the advent of novel multimodality imaging technologies, the detection and evaluation o

Although diadochokinetic (DDK) tasks are a popular assessment tool in clinical practice, the interpretation of their results is often limited and obscure. This paper examines the development of DDK skills in normally developing children (age range 3-5 years) for comparison with three case studies of children with specific speech difficulties. The results are presented in terms of accuracy, rate and consistency of response. The normally-developing children increased the accuracy and consistency but not the rate of their responses between the ages of 3 and 5 years. The three case study children

We studied the effect occurring in close proximity before the phonation start and give an account of the microdramas taking place upon the glottis immediately before the phonation start in a group of individuals suffering from balbuties (60 children and adolescents from 9 to 14 years of age) and an equally large control group suffering from no such speech defect. In the group of children and adolescents with balbuties only less than 4% of the cases showed undisturbed regular phonation starts, whereas in the control group it was almost as much as 90%.

The relationship among six functionally misarticulating preschool children's phoneme-specific stimulability skills, the choice of treatment targets (i.e., stimulable or nonstimulable sounds), and generalization of correct sound production was explored in this prospective study. Each subject [age range of 4:11 (years:months) to 5:6] was taught to produce [r] and one other sound that was absent from his or her phonetic inventory using a contrasting-minimal-pairs production approach. A multiple baseline across behaviors single-subject research design provided experimental control. For 86% of the

A prospective investigation of 208 patients with painful, arthrographically verified temporomandibular joint disk displacement revealed that seven patients (3%) demonstrated lingual numbness associated with speech articulation impairment. The speech disorder was characterized primarily by a distortion in the production of /s,r,d, and t/. The lingual numbness and the speech disorder had in all cases started in association with a painful onset of permanent displacement of the temporomandibular joint disk. Local anesthetic blocking of the auriculotemporal nerve eliminated both joint pain and musc

INTRODUCTION: Speech disorders were often allotted to hypoglossal-facial anastomosis (HFA) without being clearly shown. We have compared patients with a peripheral facial paralysis at those with HFA.
AIMS OF THE STUDY: Retrospective study comparing verbal communication (articulation) and non-verbal within two groups of patients: patients with patient FP versus with HFA.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 10 patients with idiopathic FP versus 7 patients with HFA took part in this study. The series of tests includes an evaluation of the motor possibilities, bilabial pressure measurement (for the patients w

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is a congenital developmental disorder characterized by asymmetric underdevelopment of structures derived from the first and second pharyngeal arches. It most commonly affects the mandible and the ear, but it is frequently associated with additional anomalies such as cleft palate, vertebral malformations, or velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD). Due to its complex nature, CFM requires comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
SUMMARY: This narrative literature review aimed to characterize articulation difficulties and primary function disorders

Slowly progressive aphemia (SPA) is a rare focal degenerative disorder characterized by severe dysarthria, frequent orofacial apraxia, dysprosody, phonetic and phonemic errors without global cognitive deterioration for many years. This condition is caused by a degeneration of anterior frontal lobe regions, mainly of the left frontal operculum. We report a case of SPA with a course of 8 years, evaluated by repeated neuropsychological, conventional, and functional MRI examinations. In our case, neuropsychological examinations showed a progressive impairment of speech articulation including dyspr

BACKGROUND: The object of this study was to analyze the executive functioning of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or reading disability (RD) independent of their non-executive deficits.
METHODS: Three carefully diagnosed groups of children, aged between 7 and 12 years (35 ADHD, 22 RD and 30 typically developing children), were tested on a wide range of tasks related to five major domains of executive functioning (EF): inhibition, visual working memory, planning, cognitive flexibility, and verbal fluency. Additional tasks were selected for each domain to control fo

This article has two purposes: to outline aspects of nonlinear phonological theory that refer to syllable, word, and phrase structure, and to provide some examples of phonological intervention techniques for development of these structures. A variety of restricted child productions of syllable, word, and phrase structures are described in nonlinear terms. Intervention targets are defined for each of the restrictions, and both general and specific interventions are suggested, the majority of which have been clinically evaluated. Clinicians are encouraged to try various alternatives to discover
