Noneffect of oral urinary copper ascorbic acid on reduction glucose test.

References and texts in the fields of diabetes and clinical chemistry commonly report that ascorbic acid when given orally or parenterally gives a false-positive reaction to the copper reduction glucose test (Clinitest). This impression is based on a study in which ascorbic acid (250 mg./dl.) was added to urine in vitro, with a resultant positive-test reading in the absence of glucose. Ascorbic acid is a reducing agent, and theoretically it could interfere with the copper reduction method of glucose detection. In the current study 10 nondiabetic men were ingesting 4 and 6 gm. ascorbic acid per…

Ascorbic acid prevents corneal ulceration and perforation following experimental alkali burns.

Depressed aqueous humor glucose and ascorbic acid levels returned to control values within 14 days following a 20 sec, 6 mm. diameter, 1N sodium hydroxide burn of the rabbit cornea. These corneas did not ulcerate or perforate. After a 20 sec., 12 mm. diameter, 1N sodium hydroxide burn, aqueous humor glucose levels returned to normal values, but ascorbic acid levels remained significantly depressed for up to 30 days. These corneas became markedly ulcerated in about 60 per cent of animals and frequently perforated. Following 12 mm. alkali burns, rabbits treated daily with 1.5 Gm. of subcutaneous…

Urinary hydroxyproline in the elderly with low leucocyte ascorbic acid levels.

Fourteen elderly patients aged 58 to 91 with varying leucocyte ascorbic acid levels had urinary hydroxyproline/creatinine ratios measured before, during, and after treatment with ascorbic acid 1 g. daily for six days. The ratio increased during treatment in those patients whose initial ascorbic acid levels were below 15mug./10(8) white blood cells. It is suggested that collagen metabolism may be impaired in these patients, and that all such patients should receive ascorbic acid supplements.

Effect of ascorbic acid on pituitary prolactin secretion in the non-ascorbate synthesizing Osteogenic Disorder Shionogi (ODS) rat.

We examined the secretion of prolactin (PRL) in the hereditary scurvy-prone Osteogenic Disorder Shionogi (ODS) rat to investigate the role of ascorbic acid (AsA) in pituitary lactotroph and hypothalamic function. Plasma PRL concentrations of conscious AsA-deficient or control ODS rats were measured before and after the administration of metoclopramide (MCP), 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP) or saline. The basal plasma PRL levels did not differ between the two groups. However, the AsA-deficient rats exhibited significantly larger changes in plasma prolactin concentration in response to MCP or 5-H…

Preoperative Ascorbic Acid Levels in Proximal Femur Fracture Patients Have No Postoperative Clinical Impact, While Ascorbic Acid Levels upon Discharge Have a Major Effect on Postoperative Outcome.

Proximal femur fractures show a high prevalence in elderly patients and are associated with an elevated risk of multimorbidity and early mortality. Recovery is impaired by malnutrition and oxidative stress, which is affected by antioxidants such as ascorbic acid (AA). This study monitored AA levels during hospitalization of patients with a proximal femur to investigate the influence of AA status to the clinical outcome. AA levels of 25 elderly patients with a proximal femur fracture were measured during hospitalization using high performance liquid chromatography. Plasma samples were collected…

The contribution of ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acid to the protective role of pleura during inflammatory reactions.

It is well-known that parapneumonic effusions lead to the formation of inflammatory exudates which contain an increasing amount of inflammatory cells, especially polymorphonuclear. At these pathological conditions characterized by oxidative stress, ascorbic acid (AA) plays an important role in quenching free radicals, so that it could protect neutrophils and mesothelial cells from oxidative damage. Besides that ascorbic acid and its metabolite dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) alters the sheep visceral and parietal pleura permeability. More specific ascorbic acid as well as dehydroascorbic acid decre…

The effect of omega-3 fatty acid and ascorbic acid on healing of ischemic colon anastomoses.

PURPOSE: Many systemic and local factors contribute to gastrointestinal tract anastomoses dehiscence, which is a serious and potentially fatal postoperative complication. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of omega-3 fatty acid and ascorbic acid on the healing of ischemic colon anastomosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 40 Wistar Albino rats weighing between 180 and 220 g were divided into four groups. Groups were assigned as follows; Group 1 (control): anastomosis and no treatment, Group 2: anastomosis plus ascorbic acid, Group 3: anastomosis plus omega-3 fatty acid, and Group 4: anas…

[Effect of amino acid imbalance and ascorbic acid deficit on the carcinogenic effect of N-nitrosopiperidine].

A study was made of the effect of ascorbic acid deficiency and low levels of lysine, methionine and threonine on the cancerogenic effect of nitrosopiperidine which was fed to guinea-pigs with drinking water in a single dose of 4.25 mg/kg bw. Deficiency of the nutrients given alone or especially in combination speeded up the growth tumors induced by the cancerogenic agent. A possibility of inducing esophageal tumors in guinea-pigs has been demonstrated for the first time.
