BACKGROUND: In the early literature, unintentional vitamin C deficiency in humans was associated with heart failure. Experimental vitamin C deficiency in guinea pigs caused enlargement of the heart. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze case reports on vitamin C and pulmonary hypertension.
METHODS: We searched Pubmed and Scopus for case studies in which vitamin C deficiency was considered to be the cause of pulmonary hypertension. We selected reports in which pulmonary hypertension was diagnosed by echocardiography or catheterization, for any age, sex, or dosage of vitamin C. W

A 10-year-old boy developed a perifollicular rash during interim maintenance of T-Cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Differential diagnoses included drug reaction and inflammatory process. Before diagnosis, the patient had a limited diet--low in vegetables and fruits--due to selective eating, with later anorexia and taste aversions due to chemotherapy treatment. Despite nutritional counselling and starting a multivitamin, the patient incurred severe weight loss (18.5% of his usual body weight). Serum levels of ascorbic acid were non-detectable, at <5 μmol/L, indicative of vitamin C deficiency

In order to determine if the absence of vitamin C in the diet of capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) causes scurvy, a group of seven young individuals were fed food pellets without ascorbic acid, while another group of eight individuals received the same food with 1 g of ascorbic acid per animal per day. Animals in the first group developed signs of scurvy-like gingivitis, breaking of the incisors and death of one animal. Clinical signs appeared between 25 and 104 days from the beginning of the trial in all individuals. Growth rates of individuals deprived of vitamin C was considerably less

Ever since the discovery of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), scientists have been intrigued as to how ascorbic acid deficiency can lead to the diverse symptoms exhibited in scurvy. Only in recent years has it been appreciated that ascorbic acid has important functions in many cellular reactions and processes in addition to its role in collagen synthesis. The few such reactions that are understood at the molecular level make it apparent that ascorbic acid does not directly participate in enzyme-catalyzed conversion of substrate to product. Instead, the vitamin regenerates prosthetic metal ions in the…

Micronutrient deficiencies are relatively common, in particular iron and cobalamin deficiency, and may potentially lead to life-threatening clinical consequences when not promptly recognized and treated, especially in elderly patients. The stomach plays an important role in the homeostasis of some important hematopoietic micronutrients like iron and cobalamin, and probably in others equally important such as ascorbic acid, calcium, and magnesium. A key role is played by the corpus oxyntic mucosa composed of parietal cells whose main function is gastric acid secretion and intrinsic factor produ
