BACKGROUND: There are a number of different manifestations of pulmonary aspergillosis. This study aims to review the radiology, presentation, and histological features of lung nodules caused by Aspergillus spp.
METHODS: Patients were identified from a cohort attending our specialist Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis clinic. Patients with cavitating lung lesions, with or without fibrosis and those with aspergillomas or a diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis were excluded. Fungal infections of the urinary tract are usually encountered following prolonged antibiotic use, instrumentation and indwelling urinary catheters. Aspergillus thyroiditis is a rare disorder detected in immunocompromised patients during disseminated infections. Early management is essential to prevent high mortality. A 61-year-old allogeneic stem cell male recipient presented with painful thyroid nodular enlargement. He had low TSH and low free T4 levels. The thyroid ultrasound showed a hypoechoic nodule; biopsy indicated suppurative Aspergillus thyroiditis. He was successfully treated by amphotericin B.

A rapid and accurate diagnosis of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) has been a great challenge particularly in cases requiring prompt antifungal treatment. In this study, four primer pairs were designed for a quadruplex PCR assay, which was developed for detection of four fungal species simultaneously. DNA extraction of cultured colonies and spiked blood samples were performed using conventional (phenol-chloroform) techniques and commercial DNA extraction kit.
