NASA is very interested in improving its ability to monitor and forecast the radiation levels that pose a health risk to space-walking astronauts as they construct the International Space Station and astronauts that will participate in long-term and deep-space missions. Human exploratory missions to the moon and Mars within the next quarter century, will expose crews to transient radiation from solar particle events which include high-energy galactic cosmic rays and high-energy protons. Because the radiation levels in space are high and solar activity is presently unpredictable, adequate shiel

A subset of long-duration spaceflight astronauts have experienced ophthalmic abnormalities, collectively termed spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). Little is understood about the pathophysiology of SANS; however, microgravity-induced alterations in intracranial pressure (ICP) due to headward fluid shifts is the primary hypothesized contributor. In particular, potential changes in optic nerve (ON) tortuosity and ON sheath (ONS) distension may indicate altered cerebrospinal fluid dynamics during weightlessness. The present longitudinal study aims to provide a quantitative analys

PURPOSE: The spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) affects astronauts on missions to the International Space Station (ISS). The SANS has blurred vision and ocular changes as typical features. The objective of this study was to investigate if microgravity can create deformations or movements of the eye or optic nerve, and if such changes could be linked to SANS.
DESIGN: Cohort study.
PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-two astronauts (age 48 ± 4 years).
METHODS: The intervention consisted of time in microgravity at the ISS. We co-registered pre- and postspaceflight magnetic resonance imaging

To examine otolith-governed ocular torsion in hyper- and hypogravity, eight subjects, including two astronauts, underwent parabolic flight while seated upright with head fixed. A mask fitted with two video cameras provided synchronized images of both eyes at a rate of 25/sec during 15 parabolas, the individual parabolas separated by a few minutes of level 1 G flight. Three main findings emerged: 1) After the first parabola, most subjects showed differential torsional offset of the two eyes in the 1 G portions between parabolas, compared to the conjugate baseline position of the eyes prior to t

Free fall per se whether in parabolic or orbital flight may be regarded as a "partial" motion environment with respect to eliciting motion sickness, requiring an additional component to render this environment "complete" or stressful. Parabolic flight in toto falls in the category of a "complete" motion environment in that some persons became motion sick with head fixed and eyes closed. In the present experiment we selected subjects who were symptom free or nearly symptom free in the KC-135 with head fixed. All tests were conducted with the subject rotating at 30 rpm in a rotating litter chair

The health risk of staying in space is a well-known fact, and the radiation doses to the astronauts must be monitored. The Pille-ISS thermoluminescent dosimeter system is present on the International Space Station (ISS) since 2003. We present an analysis of 60000 data points over 19 years from the 90 min automatic measurements and show a 4-day-long segment of 15 min measurements. In the case of the 15 min we show that the mapping of the radiation environment for the orbit of the ISS is possible with the Pille system. From our results the dose rates inside the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) are a

INTRODUCTION: A majority of astronauts experience symptoms of headache, vomiting, nausea, lethargy, and gastric discomfort during the first few hours or days after entering a microgravity environment. Due to similarities in symptoms and their time evolution, it has been hypothesized that some of these conflicts are related to the development of benign intracranial hypertension in these individuals in microgravity.
METHODS: This hypothesis was tested using a validated mathematical model that embeds the intracranial system in whole-body physiology. This model was used to predict steady-state in

Space flight exerts substantial effects on fluid volume control in humans. Cardiac distension occurs during the first 1-2 days of space flight relative to supine and especially upright 1g conditions. Plasma volume contraction occurs quickly in microgravity, probably as a result of transcapillary fluid filtration into upper-body interstitial spaces. No natriuresis or diuresis has been observed in microgravity, such that diuresis cannot explain microgravity-induced hypovolemia. Reduction of fluid intake occurs irrespective of space motion sickness and leads to hypovolemia. The fourfold elevation

An analysis was performed of unstable chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood of 36 cosmonauts after long-term space missions on "Mir" orbital station. 25 cosmonauts were examined before their flights to score spontaneous yields of cytogenetical damage. In all cases the doses absorbed by crews during space flights did not exceed permissible levels of irradiation, adopted for cosmonauts. The frequencies of chromosomal-type aberrations after space missions were found to increase significantly compared to the pre-flight levels. The yields of dicentrics and centric rings on the average were as

Prolonged exposure to a microgravity setting results in alterations to the hearts of astronauts. While multiple studies have documented the impact of microgravity on cardiovascular well-being, there is still a deficiency in extensive research regarding the mechanisms behind cardiac damage. In this review, we focus on the structural and functional changes in the heart associated with microgravity conditions, along with the underlying mechanisms that cause cardiac remodeling due to microgravity. We summarize potential protective strategies against microgravity induced cardiac injury. In this way

BACKGROUND: Space exploration has progressed significantly with increased human presence in orbit, the development of space stations, and the planning of increasingly prolonged missions. However, the space environment poses substantial physiological challenges, particularly for the cardiovascular system. According to NASA's Human Research Program, the five primary risks associated with human spaceflight are (1) microgravity, (2) ionizing cosmic radiation, (3) isolation and confinement, (4) closed environmental systems, and (5) great distance from Earth.
SUMMARY: The cardiovascular system is a

Human space exploration presents an unparalleled opportunity to study life in extreme environments-but it also exposes astronauts to physiological stressors that jeopardize key systems like vision. Corneal health, essential for maintaining precise visual acuity, is threatened by microgravity-induced fluid shifts, cosmic radiation, and the confined nature of spacecraft living environments. These conditions elevate the risk of corneal abrasions, infections, and structural damage. In addition, Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS)-while primarily affecting the posterior segment-has

Most of the astronauts experience visual illusions, apparent flashes of light (LF) in absence of light. The first reported observation of this phenomenon was in July 1969 by Buzz Aldrin, in the debriefing following the Apollo 11 mission. Several ground-based experiments in the 1970s tried to clarify the mechanisms behind these light flashes and to evaluate possible related risks. These works were supported by dedicated experiments in space on the following Apollo flights and in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It was soon demonstrated that the LF could be caused by charged particles (present in the spac

It is well known that microgravity results in various physiological alterations, for example, head-ward fluid shifts which can impede physiological adaptation. Other factors that may affect crew operational efficiency include disruption of sleep-wake cycles, high workload, isolation, confinement, stress, and fatigue. From an operational perspective, it is difficult to predict which individuals will be most or least affected in this unique environment given that most astronauts are first-time flyers. During future lunar and Mars missions space crews will include both men and women of multi-nati

Access to medical care during long duration space missions is extremely important. Numerous unanticipated medical problems will need to be addressed promptly and efficiently. Although telemedicine provides a convenient tool for remote diagnosis and treatment, it is impractical due to the long delay between data transmission and reception to Earth. While a well-trained surgeon-internist-astronaut would be an essential addition to the crew, the vast number of potential medical problems necessitate instant access to computerized, skill-enhancing and diagnostic tools. This chapter summarized the information available on the pharmacological kits onboard spacecraft and on the use of drugs in space, while the next chapter is dedicated to the impacts of weightlessness on drug pharmacokinetics. The need of a selected group of drugs for the use of astronauts during short-term and long-term spaceflights has been discussed. Recommendations are made for a Space Pharmacopoeia as well as for the areas of research needed to adapt medication to the weightlessness of the space environment. Although the usefulness of these drugs has been clearly demonstrated, their use al

Spaceflight-associated dry eye syndrome (SADES) has been reported among astronauts during both International Space Station (ISS) and Space Transportation System (STS) missions. As future missions extend beyond low Earth orbit, the physiological challenges of spaceflight include microgravity, radiation, and environmental stressors, which may further exacerbate the development of ocular surface disease. A deeper understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, along with the exploration of innovative countermeasures, is critical. In this review, we examine nanomedicine as a promising countermeas
