Effect of speechreading in presbycusis: Do we have a third ear?

INTRODUCTION: Evidence regarding the effect of speechreading is lacking in age-related hearing loss (presbycusis). Thus, in individuals with presbycusis, this study determined whether speechreading would improve word intelligibility. Moreover, the study investigated the effect of speechreading on word intelligibility depending on hearing impairment severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This analytical, cross-sectional study involved two groups of individuals aged > 65 years that were enrolled by convenience sampling: 29 individuals with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss compatible with presb

Otoscopic findings in relation to tympanometry during infancy.

To determine the value of different otoscopic findings in diagnosing otitis media with effusion, 3,780 otological examinations of 250 infants at ages 0-2 years were compared with tympanometric findings. Otoscopy was performed by an experienced otologist and research-audiologist prior to tympanometry. The following success rates for these procedures were found: otoscopy, 85-91%, tympanometry, 74-94%, either otoscopy or tympanometry, 89-99%. "Glue" was noted as the most frequent abnormal otoscopic feature, i.e., depending on age, 6-32%. Fluid line/ bubbles, bulging/hyperaemia or otorrhoea were r

[The language and speech skills in 417 children with cleft formations].

Children with cleft palate often suffer from hearing, speech, and language articulation disorders. In order to design an efficient rehabilitation program for children thus affected, it is mandatory to acquire knowledge of the long term results achieved by the various therapeutical strategies including velopharyngoplasty and speech therapy. In this follow-up study 417 children with cleft palate (excluding isolated cleft lip) were examined in an interdisciplinary approach by maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, otolaryngologists, audiologists, and speech and language pathologists. The examinat…

High-Resolution Computed Tomography of the Temporal Bone in Chronic Otitis Media: An Observational Study at a Tertiary Care Center in Jharkhand, India.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic otitis media refers to middle ear inflammation. A radiological exam is a crucial step in this diagnostic process, in addition to a clinical evaluation and an evaluation by an audiologist. For the development of innovative surgical treatment plans for middle ear otitis media with the aim of minimally invasive surgery, accurate information regarding the extent of lesions is required. This is made possible by a temporal bone imaging test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), a tertiary care facility in Ranchi,

A Machine Learning Based Clustering Protocol for Determining Hearing Aid Initial Configurations from Pure-Tone Audiograms.

Of the nearly 35 million people in the USA who are hearing impaired, only an estimated 25% use hearing aids (HA). A good number of HAs are prescribed but not used partially because of the time to convergence for best operation between the audiologist and user. To improve HA retention, it is suggested that a machine learning (ML) protocol could be established which improves initial HA configurations given a user's pure-tone audiogram. This study examines a ML clustering method to predict the best initial HA fitting from a corpus of over 90,000 audiogram-fitting pairs collected from hearing cent

Aural rehabilitation for deaf children: a northeastern Thailand experience.

Aural rehabilitation for deaf children (hearing loss > 90 dB) has been established since World War II. Many developed countries such as USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Australia have famous institutes providing aural rehabilitation for these children so that they are able to communicate with other people in the hearing society. Teaching programs include auditory training, speech stimulation, speech correction and developing language skills by using natural conversation and real models. In Thailand, the most common mode of communication for deaf children is total communication whic

Optimal Retention Force of Audio Processor Magnets.

HYPOTHESIS: Audio processor magnets used in transcutaneous active hearing implants vary in retention force. We hypothesized that a range of optimal magnetic retention forces could be derived, based on objective in-situ measurements of individual retention forces. BACKGROUND: The magnetic force required to retain the proper placement of transcutaneous active hearing implants varies among patients. Currently, audiologists rely on personal experience in deciding which magnet to use. Insufficient force causes frequent loss of the single-unit processors or external coils of behind-the-ear devices,…
