Electroacupuncture at Hoku elicits dual effect on autonomic nervous system in anesthetized rats.

To address the effect of electroacupuncture (Ea) on the autonomic nerve activity, responses of arteriole blood pressure (BP), intragastric pressure (IGP) and parasympathetic vagal nerve activity (VNA) to Ea were investigated in alpha-chloralose anesthetized rats. The acupoint: Hoku (Li-4) was tested with two different stimulation frequencies (2 and 20 Hz). Decrease in VNA and basal IGP associated with elevation of BP were elicited during Ea at Hoku with stimulation intensity of 20 times of motor threshold. The pattern of response induced by the low frequency Ea (LFEa) was different from that b

Influence of age, the autonomic nervous system and anxiety on QT-interval variability.

As QT variability increases and heart rate variability diminishes, the QT variability index (QTVI) - a non-invasive measure of beat-to-beat fluctuations in QT interval on a single ECG lead - shows a trend towards positive values. Increased QT variability is a risk factor for sudden death. Aging lengthens the QT interval and reduces RR-interval variability. In the present study we investigated the influence of aging and the autonomic nervous system on QT-interval variability in healthy subjects. We studied 143 healthy subjects, and divided them into two age ranges (younger and older than 65 yea…

Analysis of antibodies against components of the autonomic nervous system in diabetes mellitus.

Antibodies to autonomic nervous system structures have previously been detected using a complement fixation immunofluorescence test in the sera of patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). These antibodies might play a role in the aetiology of autonomic neuropathy. Sera from 45 IDDM, 40 NIDDM and 52 control subjects were tested by immunofluorescence for antibodies to human sympathetic ganglia, human adrenal medulla and rabbit vagus nerve. The use of human sympathetic ganglia was compared with rabbit tissue for the detection of…

Abnormalities of autonomic nervous system in hyperadrenergic orthostatic hypotension: description of a case.

Hyperadrenergic orthostatic hypotension was diagnosed in a 27-year-old man because of recurrent episodes of hypotension associated with high plasma noradrenaline levels. In this patient, laboratory tests were performed to evaluate autonomic nervous system function. Decreased response to Valsalva maneuver and carotid sinus massage indicated decreased baroreflex and vagal responsiveness, respectively. Cardiovascular response to the handgrip was reduced in comparison to controls. Passive leg raise showed normal reduction of plasma norepinephrine, indicating normal responsiveness of cardiopulmonar…

Predominant symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome correlate with specific autonomic nervous system abnormalities.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Irritable bowel syndrome may be influenced by the autonomic nervous system. Abnormalities in autonomic function, colon transit time, and psychological profiles in 21 patients were assessed. METHODS: Using modified Manning criteria for irritable bowel syndrome, patients were classified as constipation-predominant or diarrhea-predominant. Autonomic function was determined by one vagal cholinergic and two sympathetic adrenergic measures. Colon transit was assessed by radiopaque markers, and psychological profiles were determined by three inventories. RESULTS: Autonomic function…

[Transient sinus node arrest-a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (author's transl)].

Electrophysiologic studies had been performed before and after pharmacologic autonomic blockade (propranolol 0.2 mg/kg and atropine 0.04 mg/kg body weight) in a 23-year-old female patient with documented sinus arrest of 27 sec duration. Normal electrophysiologic findings before and after autonomic blockade excluded intrinsic sinus node dysfunction. Sinus arrest is therefore though to be due to an intermittent dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system.

Efficacy of Rhythmic Photic Stimulation for Autonomic Nervous System Regulation in University Students.

University students frequently encounter stress and anxiety, impacting their autonomic nervous system and mental health. Rhythmic photic stimulation (RPS) at various frequencies is considered a potential intervention for anxiety and depression, but its effectiveness is not fully understood. This research aimed to assess the impact of RPS at theta (6 Hz), alpha (10 Hz), and beta (25 Hz) frequencies on autonomic nervous system regulation in university students, comparing the effects between those with and without depression symptoms. Conducted at a southern Taiwan university, this quasi-experime…

Effect of perioperative autonomic nervous system imbalance on surgical outcomes: a systematic review.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is essential for maintaining physiological homeostasis. Autonomic nervous system imbalance, characterised by sympathetic hyperactivation and low parasympathetic tone, can occur during the perioperative period. These changes drive systemic stress responses, cardiovascular instability, impaired tissue repair, and immunosuppression, which in turn increase infection risk, neurocognitive decline, and multiorgan dysfunction. Surgical trauma, anaesthesia, pain, hypothermia, and psychological stressors all contribute to this dysregulation, and consequently low parasy…

Relationship between autonomic nervous system function and endolymphatic space ratio in Ménière disease.

OBJECTIVES: Autonomic dysfunction is associated with Ménière disease (MD) and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Because the autonomic nervous system regulates blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during positional changes, these changes can be used to assess autonomic nervous system function. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between MD/BPPV and autonomic nervous system function based on BP, HR, and endolymphatic space (ELS) ratio measurements, and to examine the differences between the two diseases. METHODS: This retrospective study included 168 patients who underwent inner…

Autonomic Nervous System: A Therapeutic Target for Cardiac End-Organ Damage in Hypertension.

More than 1.5 billion people worldwide have arterial hypertension. Hypertension increases the risks of death and cardiovascular disease, such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure. The autonomic nervous system plays an essential role in hypertension development and disease progression. While lifestyle factors, such as obesity and obstructive sleep apnea, predispose to hypertension by increasing sympathetic activity, hypertension itself maintains the autonomic nervous imbalance, providing the substrate for atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Therefore, autonomic nervous system modulation …

Autonomic nervous system imbalance during aging contributes to impair endogenous anti-inflammaging strategies.

Inflammaging refers to the age-related low grade, sterile, chronic, systemic, and long-lasting subclinical, proinflammatory status, currently recognized as the main risk factor for development and progression of the most common age-related diseases (ARDs). Extensive investigations were focused on a plethora of proinflammatory stimuli that can fuel inflammaging, underestimating and partly neglecting important endogenous anti-inflammaging mechanisms that could play a crucial role in such age-related proinflammatory state. Studies on autonomic nervous system (ANS) functions during aging highlight…

Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction Is Related to Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a common and non-lethal urological condition with painful symptoms. The complexity of CP/CPPS's pathogenesis and lack of efficient etiological diagnosis results in incomplete treatment and recurrent episodes, causing long-term mental and psychological suffering in patients. Recent findings indicate that the autonomic nervous system involves in CP/CPPS, including sensory, sympathetic, parasympathetic, and central nervous systems. Neuro-inflammation and sensitization of sensory nerves lead to persistent inflammation and pain. Sympathe…

Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: An Underrecognized Cardiovascular Risk Factor?

BACKGROUND: In patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD), cardiovascular events represent the predominant cause of morbidity and mortality, with cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death being the leading causes of death in this population. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is listed among the non-traditional risk factors accounting for the observed high cardiovascular burden, with a plethora of complex and not yet fully understood pathophysiologic mechanisms being involved. SUMMARY: In recent years, preliminary studies have investigated and confirme…

The autonomic cardiac nervous system and arrhythmogenesis: risk stratification in the foreseeable future.

Both experimental and clinical studies have shown that the autonomic nervous system plays an important role in arrhythmogenesis. Many methods describing cardiovascular autonomic regulation have been developed and tested for use as predictors of arrhythmic and other cardiovascular events. The majority of studies have focused on patients with known cardiac disease, such as prior myocardial infarction or congestive heart failure. All-cause mortality, as well as non-sudden and sudden cardiac death have been used as main endpoints. Sudden cardiac death has often been considered to be equivalent to …
