An empirically grounded agent based model for modeling directs, conflict detection and resolution operations in air traffic management.

We present an agent based model of the Air Traffic Management socio-technical complex system aiming at modeling the interactions between aircraft and air traffic controllers at a tactical level. The core of the model is given by the conflict detection and resolution module and by the directs module. Directs are flight shortcuts that are given by air controllers to speed up the passage of an aircraft within a certain airspace and therefore to facilitate airline operations. Conflicts between flight trajectories can occur for two main reasons: either the planning of the flight trajectory was not

Crash rates of scheduled commuter and air carrier flights before and after a regulatory change.

INTRODUCTION: In 1997, in an effort to reduce the crash rate of scheduled commuter flights, the FAA required aircraft with 10-30 passenger seats to operate under stricter rules. Training and other requirements of 14 CFR Part 121 rules were applied to these midsize commuters, which previously had operated under the less strict Part 135 rules. Published crash rates obscured changes related to aircraft size. This research was undertaken to determine whether the rule change affected crash rates of aircraft with 10-30 passenger seats. METHOD: We determined the number of passenger seats on each Par

Cervical intervertebral disc protrusion in an RAAF F-111C pilot: a case report.

This case report describes a serious cervical spine injury occurring in an F-111 pilot of the RAAF. The pilot developed a significant cervical intervertebral disc protrusion with severe, progressive neurological signs and symptoms in his right arm for a period of 4 mo. Multiple investigations including MRI and myelography established the site of the lesion as C6/7. He eventually responded to bed rest and made a complete recovery. The aeromedical disposition of this aviator and the roles of different treatment modalities in the aviation environment are discussed. The need for more research into…

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in an airline pilot.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common types of peripheral vertigo, characterized by violent whirling vertigo … applied for his First-Class medical examination after the treatment was successfully completed. The aviation medical examiner (AME) issued the airman medical certificate after contacting and receiving verbal approval from the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) Aerospace Medical Certification Division (AMCD). Right axis deviation as a criterion for echocardiographic evaluation of aircrew candidates.

BACKGROUND: Significant pressures exist in the resource-limited environment of military aviation to select only those candidates for flight training who are both physically able to withstand the demands of the flight environment and likely to complete a career in aviation. As medical technology has advanced, uncertainty has arisen regarding the appropriate use of additional studies in the screening of aircrew candidates. At the Naval Operational Medicine Institute (NOMI), where all U.S. Navy aviation duty candidates' medical qualifications are reviewed, current policy is to perform 2D-echocard…

Comparative toxicity of ultrafine particles around a major airport in human bronchial epithelial (Calu-3) cell model at the air-liquid interface.

Relatively high concentrations of ultrafine particles (UFPs) have been observed around airports, in which aviation and road traffic emissions are the major sources. This raises concerns about the potential health impacts of airport UFPs, particularly in comparison to those emitted by road traffic. UFPs mainly derived from aviation or road traffic emissions were collected from a location near a major international airport, Amsterdam-Schiphol airport (AMS), depending on the wind direction, along with UFPs from an aircraft turbine engine at low and full thrust. Human bronchial epithelial cells (C…

[A molecular epidemiologic investigation of north Asia fever in scenic spots of Beijing suburb].

PCR/RFLP technique was used to detect spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) in ticks and small mammals collected in eleven scenic spots of Beijing suburb. We not only detected Rickettsia sibirica in D. sinicus and hedgehog collected nearby the Museum of Aviation, but also isolated two strains of SFGR from them, named as BJ-95 strain and BJH-95 strain respectively. The two strains were identified as R. sibirica by SDS-PAGE, Western blot and PCR/RFLP. The results demonstrated the existence of horizontal transmission of R. sibirica between ticks and small mammals and showed the most scenic spots…

Keratoconus and Fitness to Fly.

BACKGROUND: Of the body senses, vision is the most important for safe flight. Keratoconus causes progressive blurring and distortion of vision, which threatens the career of a civilian or military aviator. The goal of this retrospective study was to describe a series of keratoconus cases in a pilot population and to discuss decisions about their flight waivers.METHODS: To assess the impact of keratoconus on flying careers, we reviewed the records of all aviators with keratoconus examined in an Aeromedical Center over the past 5 yr.RESULTS: The files of 19 pilots [13 line pilots and 6 military

Transforming carbon dioxide into jet fuel using an organic combustion-synthesized Fe-Mn-K catalyst.

With mounting concerns over climate change, the utilisation or conversion of carbon dioxide into sustainable, synthetic hydrocarbons fuels, most notably for transportation purposes, continues to attract worldwide interest. This is particularly true in the search for sustainable or renewable aviation fuels. These offer considerable potential since, instead of consuming fossil crude oil, the fuels are produced from carbon dioxide using sustainable renewable hydrogen and energy. We report here a synthetic protocol to the fixation of carbon dioxide by converting it directly into aviation jet fuel …

The personal limitations checklist: human factors insights from air accidents to reduce intraoperative harm.

High Reliability Organisations (HRO), including healthcare and aviation, have a common focus on risk management. The human element is a 'weak link' which may result in accidents or adverse events taking place. Surgeons and other healthcare professionals can learn from aviation's rigorous approach to the role of human factors (HF) in such events, and how we can minimise them. Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) reports show that fatal accidents are frequently caused by pilots flying outside their own personal limits, those of the aircraft or environment. Similarly, patient morbidity or mor…

Cancer incidence in United States Air Force aircrew, 1975-89.

UNLABELLED: We compared the cancer incidence of male United States Air Force (USAF) aircrew (342 cancers, 532,980.97 man-years) with non-flying Air Force officers (827 cancers, 1,084,370.08 man-years) between 1975-89. METHODS: Incident cancer cases for both aviators and non-flying officers were obtained from USAF hospitalization records. Age-adjusted standardized incidence ratios (SIR's) were calculated for aircrew using data from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program. Aviator age-adjusted cancer rate ratios were also obtained using non-flyin

The application of endoscopic sinus surgery to the treatment of recurrent sinus barotrauma.

Recurrent sinus barotrauma is an uncommon condition but it may terminate the career of an aviator. Sinus barotrauma occurs almost exclusively on descent and probably results from occlusion of the sinus ostia through a combination of mucosal disease and anatomical abnormalities. Traditional methods of treating sinus barotrauma have achieved mixed results so we have employed functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) since 1990. The presentation and outcome of 39 patients with recurrent sinus barotrauma managed by FESS have been reviewed. Ninety-five per cent were able to resume their full flyin
