PURPOSE: Severe eating and feeding disorders including Anorexia Nervosa of both restricting (AN-R) and binge-purge (AN-BP) subtypes and Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) lead to multiple macronutrient and micronutrient deficiencies, including zinc, in the setting of inadequate dietary intake. We investigated whether zinc levels correlated with severe malnutrition, with particular subtypes of eating disorders (EDs), and the effect of the refeeding process.
METHODS: This prospective study included 92 adult patients with severe AN or ARFID hospitalized in a medical stabilization …

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are serious illnesses which profoundly impact individuals and the people close to them. Despite robust evidence that early intervention improves clinical outcomes, help-seeking by individuals with EDs is low and long periods of untreated illness are common. Social support networks can facilitate help-seeking, although most research has focused on the experiences of parents supporting adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) to seek help and engage in treatment. The present study sought to explore the perspectives of a broadly defined group of 'close others' on

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) during the initial hospitalization of patients with eating disorders (EDs) and to assess its potential as a biomarker for monitoring disease severity and treatment response.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted with 55 patients aged ≤ 16 years diagnosed with anorexia nervosa or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and admitted to Jichi Medical University Hospital between 2015 and 2021. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics including sex, age, rate of weight gain, percen

This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between January and March 2024 at the University Hospital in Oujda and several educational institutions, involving a randomly selected sample of children and adolescents aged 7-18 years. The University Hospital Center of Oujda and the selected educational institutions were chosen for their accessibility and their capacity to represent a broad spectrum of children and adolescents from various socioeconomic backgrounds within Oujda and neighboring areas. This allowed for the recruitment of a diverse and representative sample reflective of the

OBJECTIVE: There are a subset of individuals with eating disorders (EDs) who do not overevaluate body shape/weight (i.e., nonfat phobic ED; NFP-ED). According to the transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral conceptualization of EDs, a need for control, in general, is hypothesized as the core psychopathology of NFP-EDs, with shape- and weight-related motivations for ED behavior merely superimposed in FP-ED presentations. This study tested the need for control as motivation for restriction in NFP-ED, using items aimed at assessing control from the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) Restraint scale.

Food avoidance and disordered eating behavior are hallmarks of the psychopathologic disorders known as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by severe restriction of food intake, which leads to weight loss and the medical consequences of starvation. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by attempts to curtail food intake, interspersed with binge eating, followed by self- induced vomiting to rid the body of food. Tooth erosion and heightened sensitivity, caused by tooth contact with gastric acid during vomiting, are among several intraoral signs and symptoms of anor

We present a case of a woman in her early 30s who developed severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms following exposure to news reports about instant noodles allegedly contaminated with a carcinogenic substance. The news triggered an overwhelming fear of ingesting harmful food associated with persistent and intrusive thoughts about contamination in this patient. As a result, she adopted extreme food avoidance behaviours and restricted her oral intake for 2 weeks, causing significant weight loss and anxiety. Following a visit to her psychiatrist and a prescription for a selective ser

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with functional constipation (FC) are frequently dissatisfied with current treatment options which may be related to persistent, unaddressed symptoms. We hypothesized that refractory FC may actually represent functional dyspepsia (FD) overlap. Among adults presenting with refractory FC, we sought to (1) identify the prevalence of concurrent FD and (2) identify the symptoms and presentations most frequently associated with concurrent FD and FC.
METHODS: We assembled a retrospective cohort of 308 patients sequentially presenting to a tertiary neurogastroenterology

OBJECTIVE: Recovery from an eating disorder (ED) may be defined differently by different stakeholders. We set out to understand the definition of ED recovery from the perspective of patients, their parents, and clinicians.
METHOD: We recruited patients with EDs (n = 24, ages 12-23 years) representing different diagnoses (anorexia nervosa n = 17, bulimia nervosa n = 4, binge-ED n = 2, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder n = 1), along with their parents (n = 20), dietitians (n = 11), therapists (n = 14), and primary care providers (n = 9) from three sites: Boston Children's Hospital, Univ

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-metabolic disorder affecting females across the lifespan. Eating disorders (EDs) are psychiatric conditions that may impact the development of PCOS and comorbidities including obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. The aim of this scoping review was to determine the prevalence of EDs and disordered eating, and to review the etiology of EDs in PCOS. The review was conducted using search terms addressing PCOS, EDs, and disordered eating in databases, including PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. Structured interviews, sel

OBJECTIVE: Body and food-related information are thought to activate cognitive biases and contribute to the maintenance of eating disorders (ED). Approach-avoidance biases may play an important role in the maintenance of dietary restriction and excessive food intake. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine approach-avoidance biases toward food and body stimuli in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: The study included 42 individuals with AN, 24 individuals with BN, and 38 HCs. We used two implicit Approach-Avoidance Tasks (AAT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (EDs) affect a substantial number of American adolescents, with an increasing number seeking care for EDs during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. We assessed the prevalence and clinical characteristics of adolescents hospitalized with EDs during 2010 to 2022.
METHODS: We used data from a national database of 12 children's hospitals (PEDSnet). Adolescents aged 12 to 21 years hospitalized for ED, disordered eating, binge ED, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), or other EDs were included. Patients

OBJECTIVE: The use of coercion in the treatment for anorexia nervosa (AN) is controversial and the limited studies to date have focused on involuntary treatment. However, coercive pressure for treatment that does not include legal measures is common in voluntarily admitted patients with AN. Empirical data examining the effect of non-legal forms of coerced care on hospital outcomes are needed.
METHOD: Participants (N = 202) with AN, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), or subthreshold AN admitted to a hospital-based behavioral specialty program completed questionnaires assessing

PURPOSE: There is no consensus regarding the optimal target weight for discharge during the hospitalization of children with eating disorders (EDs). We attempted to identify the ideal discharge weight for children receiving their first inpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa (AN) or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty children (mean age: 12.8 years) diagnosed with either AN (49 children) or ARFID (11 children) were followed for 1 year after discharge from a psychiatric ward. We analyzed the percent of ideal body weight (%IBW) at discharge, along wit

Three cases reports describe assessment and treatment of three boys (ages 6 to 8 years) hospitalized because of weight loss and malnutrition, caused by severe dietary restriction and/or refusal to eat solid food. Psychological, behavioral, and medical assessments indicated that the boys were of average intelligence, without other significant psychological or medical disorders. Their eating disturbances were conceptualized as phobic disorders maintained by family factors reinforcing the children's avoidant behaviors. Cognitive-behavioral treatment consisted of an individualized combination of c

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder associated with severe weight loss as a consequence of voluntary food intake avoidance. Animal models such as dehydration-induced anorexia (DIA) mimic core features of the disorder, including voluntary reduction in food intake, which compromises the supply of energy to the brain. Glial cells, the major population of nerve cells in the central nervous system, play a crucial role in supplying energy to the neurons. The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest white matter tract in mammals, and more than 99% of the cell somata correspond to glial cells in rodents

UNLABELLED: Eating disorders (EDs) are debilitating health conditions and common across cultures. Recent reports suggest that about 14.0% of university students in Malaysia are at risk for developing an ED, and that prevalence may differ by ethnicity and gender. However, less is known about the prevalence of EDs in nonuniversity populations.
OBJECTIVE: The current study seeks to (1) estimate the prevalence of EDs and ED risk status among adults in Malaysia using an established diagnostic screen; (2) examine gender and ethnic differences between ED diagnostic/risk status groups; and (3) charac
