Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis continues to be a leading cause of mortality among bacterial diseases, and the bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is the only licensed vaccine for human use against this disease. A 79-y-old man presented with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and jaundice, 6 h after the first intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) for bladder cancer; he had a subsequent reaction 4 weeks later. Liver biopsy findings were compatible with BCG hepatitis. Anti-mycobacterial treatment induced complete recovery. The first episode probably represents a hypersensitivity reaction, whereas the latter course suggests BCG dissemination.

The BCG is administered to all the newborns at birth in Iran. Systemic adverse reactions to BCG vaccine such as osteomyelitis and disseminated BCG infection are rare. This is a retrospective study of 15 cases <72 months who were admitted with systemic syndrome compatible with disseminated mycobacterial disease during 2004-07. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO(2)) has been evaluated as a new sterilization technology. Results are presented on killing of B. pumilus spores using SC CO(2) containing trace levels of additives. Complete killing was achieved with 200 part per million (ppm) hydrogen peroxide in SC CO(2) at 60 degrees C, 27.5 MPa. Addition of water to SC CO(2) resulted in greater than three-log killing, but this is insufficient to claim sterilization. Neither ethanol nor isopropanol when added to SC CO(2) affected killing.

OBJECTIVE: Intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is an established treatment of carcinoma in situ and recurrent superficial bladder tumours. The inflammatory reaction due to BCG provokes cystitis of short duration as a frequent side effect. Although intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) administration is an effective method in the treatment of superficial urinary bladder carcinoma, some complications may arise such as a granulomatous reaction either in the urinary tract or, in rare cases, outside the urinary tract. A review of culture reports for a five-year period at St Jude Children's Research Hospital yielded 10 cases of primary cutaneous Bacillus cereus infection in neutropenic patients treated for cancer or aplastic anaemia. Vesicles or pustules were seen only on the limbs. The infections, all of which arose in the spring or summer, responded to antibiotics. In neutropenic patients B cereus should thus be regarded as a possible cause of isolated vesicles.

Bacterial DNA is organized as a compact nucleoid whose structure is maintained by membrane--DNA, protein--DNA and RNA--DNA interactions. We investigated the effect of the transcription inhibitor rifamycin on the structure of the nucleoid in B. subtilis. Decrease of nucleoid compactness and loss of DNA superhelicity were correlated with DNA transcription arrest, both in the wild-type and in a rifamycin-resistant strain. Moreover, the phospholipid content of the nucleoid does not change upon rifamycin treatment.
