AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) associated Kaposi's Sarcoma (EKS) is widely spread in the Southern African Region. No large studies concerning the role of radiation therapy in the Southern African variant of EKS have been reported to date.
METHODS: Over a 10 year period (1982-1992) 25 patients with EKS (disseminated skin involvement) were treated primarily with radiation therapy at the Johannesburg General Hospital. Radiation fields were individually tailored to the extent of the disease. Total administered doses ranged between 8-12 Gy (single fraction) to 24-30

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Up to 50-60% of all cancer patients receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment strategy. However, the mechanisms accounting for increased vascular risks after irradiation are not completely understood. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been identified as a potential cause of radiation-induced atherosclerosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Assays for apoptosis, cellular metabolism, mitochondrial DNA content, functionality and morphology were used to compare the response of endothelial cells to a single 2 Gy dose of X-rays under basal conditions or after pharmacological treatm

BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure is known to increase the risk of chronic inflammatory diseases, such as atherosclerosis, by modulating inflammation.
METHODS: To investigate the infiltration of leukocytes in radiation-aggravated atherosclerosis, we examined low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient (Ldlr-/-) mice and C57BL/6j mice after exposure to 0.5 or 1 Gy radiation over 16 weeks.
RESULTS: We found that radiation exposure induced atherosclerosis development in Ldlr-/- mice, as demonstrated by increased lipid-laden plaque size, reactive oxygen species levels, and levels of the pro-inflamma

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common condition, often requiring surgical correction. Computed tomography (CT) based navigation technologies, which rely on ionizing radiation, are increasingly being utilized for surgical treatment. Although this population is highly vulnerable to radiation, given their age and female predominance, there is little available information elucidating modeled iatrogenic cancer risk.
PURPOSE: To model lifetime cancer risk associated with the use of intraoperative CT-based navigation for surgical treatment of AIS.

BACKGROUND: Increased risks of exposure to accidental radiation events are a concern in today's world. Radiation terror, nuclear explosion, as well as accidental exposure to radioactive sources in some industries pose a threat to the life of exposed persons. Studies have been conducted using some low-toxic agents to mitigate radiation toxicity and increase survival probability for exposed people. In the current study, we aimed to show the mitigation of radiation-induced mortality and bone marrow toxicity using postirradiation treatment with melatonin.
METHOD: Mice whole bodies were exposed to

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that ambient sunlight plays an important role in the pathogenesis of non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC). However, there is ongoing controversy regarding the relevance of occupational exposure to natural and artificial ultraviolet radiation (UV) radiation.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated potential associations between natural and artificial UV radiation exposure at work with NMSC in a case-control study conducted in Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia.
METHODS: Occupational exposures were classified by expert assessment for 527 controls and 618 NMSC cases (515 basal cell carc

BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted navigation (RAN) during posterior spinal fusion and instrumentation (PSFI) for pediatric patients with idiopathic scoliosis has been increasingly adopted over the traditional freehand (FH) technique due to enhanced accuracy. RAN requires either intraoperative or preoperative three-dimensional imaging or computed tomography (CT). Safety concerns, therefore, exist with regard to radiation exposure for the patient and surgeon, who have been shown to experience higher cancer rates than the general population. The objective of this study was to compare the mean intraope

BACKGROUND: Pathologic complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is associated with improved overall survival (OS) in patients with breast cancer, but it is unclear how post-NACT response influences radiation therapy administration in patients presenting with node-positive disease. We sought to determine whether nodal pCR is associated with likelihood of receiving nodal radiation and whether radiation therapy among patients experiencing nodal pCR is associated with improved OS.

BACKGROUND: Hybrid operating rooms are used in different fields of surgery. In orthopedic surgery, the possibility of a 3D scan of difficult anatomical regions (spine, pelvis) showed promising results not only in navigated screw placement. The associated exposure to radiation raises questions regarding potential risks for the operating room personal and the patient. The present study focuses on scatter radiation during 3D scans in a hybrid operating room, the adjacent rooms, and methods to reduce radiation exposure.

BACKGROUND: Radiation pneumonitis is a critical pulmonary toxicity after irradiation of the lung. Macrolides including clarithromycin (CAM) are antibiotics. They also have immunomodulatory properties and are used to treat respiratory inflammatory diseases. Radiation pneumonitis has similar pathology to them. Adverse reactions to macrolides are few and self-limited. We thus administered CAM to patients with high-risk factors for radiation pneumonitis, and retrospectively investigated whether CAM mitigated radiation pneumonitis following stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT).

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) provides greater sensitivity than sestamibi with single photon emission … ctive doses of 4DCT and SeS were 10.4 and 7.8 mSv, respectively, in contrast to an estimated annual background radiation exposure of approximately 3 mSv. The dose to the thyroid with 4DCT, however, was about 57 times higher (92.0 vs. 1.6 mGy) than that with SeS. Based on age- and sex-dependent risk factors, the calculated risk of 4DCT-related thyroid cancer developing …

Background: Radiation is a mode of treatment for many pelvic malignancies, most of which originate in the gynecologic, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems. However, the healthy gut is unavoidably included in the irradiation volume, resulting in undesirable results that manifest as radiation-induced diarrhea (RID), which is the most common side effect of radiation therapy and significantly affects the patients' quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the potential mechanism of diarrhea after pelvic radiotherapy in rats based on the effect of radiation on bile acid homeostasis a

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: The global burden of kidney stone disease (KSD) and its management relies on ionising radiation. This includes the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of KSD patients. The concept 'As Low As Reasonably Achievable' (ALARA) developed in response to the radiation risks and the key principles include optimisation, justification and limitation of radiation. This article provides an overview of the topic including background to the risks and steps that can be taken during all stages of endourological management.

BACKGROUND: Cysteine-rich protein 1 (CRP1) is a growth-inhibitory cytoskeletal protein that is induced by ultraviolet (UV) C radiation radiation in fibroblasts. Our aim was to investigate the effects of UV radiation on CRP1 in keratinocytes, the main cell type subjected to UV radiation in the human body.
METHODS: The effects of physiologically relevant doses of UVB radiation on CRP1 protein levels were studied in cultured primary keratinocytes and transformed cell lines (HaCaT, A-431) by immunoblotting. UVB-induced keratinocyte apoptosis was assessed by flow cytometry and monitoring caspase a

BACKGROUND: In this comparative study we evaluate the performance of four software tools: DNAstar-D (DESeq2), DNAstar-E (edgeR), CLC Genomics and Partek Flow for identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using a transcriptome of E. coli. The RNA-seq data are from the effect of below-background radiation 5.5 nGy total dose (0.2nGy/hr) on E. coli grown shielded from natural radiation 655 m below ground in a pre-World War II steel vault. The gene expression response to three supplemented sources of radiation designed to mimic natural background, 1952 - 5720 nGy in total dose (71-208…

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread use of adjuvant irradiation for head and neck cancer, the extent of damage to the underlying bone is not fully understood but is associated with pathologic fractures, nonunion, and osteoradionecrosis. The authors' laboratory previously demonstrated that radiation significantly impedes new bone formation in the murine mandible. We hypothesize that the detrimental effects of human equivalent radiation on the murine mandible results in a dose-dependent degradation in traditional micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) metrics.

BACKGROUND: The amount of radiation dose applied in the treatment of Hodgkin's disease is associated with the incidence of complications including radiation-induced pneumonitis, lung fibrosis and pericarditis. Therefore, from the beginning of 1986, we have started to apply a radiation therapy approach with reduced doses in order to minimize complications while maintaining effective treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: From 1983 through 1992 141 patients suffering from Hodgkin's disease were included in the present study. All of them were treated by radiation of mediastinum. In 126 cases polychemot

Whole- or partial-body exposure to ionizing radiation damages major organ systems, leading to dysfunction on both acute and chronic timescales. Radiation medical countermeasures can mitigate acute damages and may delay chronic effects when delivered within days after exposure. However, in the event of widespread radiation exposure, there will inevitably be scarce resources with limited countermeasures to distribute among the affected population. Radiation biodosimetry is necessary to separate exposed from unexposed victims and determine those who requires the most urgent care. Blood-based, mic
