Susceptibilities to beta-lactam antibiotics and beta-lactamase content of two groups of Bacteroides strains were compared. Type cultures produced low levels of beta-lactamase and were susceptible to cefoxitin, latamoxef, imipenem and the combination of benzylpenicillin and clavulanic acid. The comparative study of the specific composition of bacteroids isolated from the intestine of healthy persons and from clinical material obtained from patients with different purulent inflammatory diseases has been carried out. In 2003 a Bacteroides fragilis blood culture isolate (K2-28) was recovered from a 61-y-old male with severe general atherosclerosis during treatment with meropenem. OBJECTIVES: To compare the in vitro activity of NVP-LMB415 (formerly referred to as NVP-PDF 713) with that of other agents with anti-anaerobe activity against clinical anaerobic isolates, with emphasis on the Bacteroides fragilis group.
METHODS: The MICs for 405 B. fragilis group and 102 Gram-positive anaerobic isolates were determined using NCCLS-recommended procedures. The results of this study show that there is a high frequency of resistant species in the Bacteroides fragilis group in the intestinal tract of children and adults in Brazil. A wild-type isolate with similar morphological and phenotypic properties to Taylorella equigenitalis, the causative bacterial agent of contagious equine metritis (CEM), was referred for molecular identification by PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA gene.
