In this manuscript, we describe a case of lupus nephritis with diffuse podocytic infolding in the glomerular basement membrane (GBM). A 23-year-old woman presenting with proteinuria, leukopenia, a high value of antinuclear antibody, and positive for anti-dsDNA and anti-Sm antibodies was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus. A detailed morphometric analysis of glomerular basement membrane (GBM) thickness was carried out on biopsies from 16 patients exhibiting normal histology and unremarkable immunofluorescence. Basement membrane (BM) deposition at the inter-face of tumor cells and stroma was studied in 27 bronchogenic squamous cell carcinomas. Specimens from peripheral and central parts of each tumor were collected. Numerous antigenic epitopes are present within the dermoepidermal junction of human skin. Using monoclonal antibodies, the distribution of these epitopes in ontogeny, wound healing, and epidermolysis bullosa are being defined. These studies provide insight into the pathogenic mechanisms involved and offer opportunities for prenatal and postnatal diagnosis.

We describe a sensitive radio-immunoassay for auto-antibodies to glomerular basement membrane (GBM). The assay discriminates patients with glomerulonephritis associated with circulating auto-antibodies to glomerular basement membrane from those with other forms of nephritis. Monitoring of antibody levels in sequential serial serum samples enables drug therapy to be tailored precisely to control the aberrant immune response, a situation unique in the management of glomerulonephritis.

Rats were fed on diets containing either sucrose or starch as the carbohydrate component (55%) for eight months. Diabetes was induced in animals of both groups by injecting streptozotocin (50 mg/kg body weight).
