State E-Cigarette Flavor Restrictions and Tobacco Product Use in Youths and Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Seven states have policies restricting the sale of flavored e-cigarettes. Limited evidence exists regarding these policies' asso … sk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and young adults (ages 18-24 years) and adults (ages ≥25 years) using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Six policy states had multiple years of postpolicy data available; other states were control states. Associations between policy and prevalence of e-cigarette and cigarette use in each postpolicy year were estimated annually using differenc …

Factors associated with long COVID among cancer survivors: A population-based analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer survivors endure unique immune system suppression as a result of their cancer treatment, potentially making them susceptible to long COVID in ways that differ from the general population. The purpose of this study is to assess what factors are associated with long COVID among cancer survivors. METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional data from the 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey were analyzed. The main outcome of interest was the prevalence of long COVID among cancer survivors who had tested positive for COVID-19. Bivariate analyses were cond…

Depressive disorder among gynecologic cancer survivors in the US: Evidence from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with gynecologic cancers demonstrate different psychosocial outcomes based on their cancer site, which may affect treatment effectiveness and survivorship. Demographic differences and the relation with depression (DP) among women who have a gynecologic cancer diagnosis are not well understood. METHODS: To assess whether survivors of gynecologic cancer had a greater risk of DP compared with women with and without a history of cancer, 2020 BRFSS data was utilized. Pearson chi-square and multivariable logistic regression were conducted to obtain adjusted odds ratios. RESULTS

Need for Contraceptive Services Among Women of Reproductive Age - 45 Jurisdictions, United States, 2017-2019.

Ensuring access to contraceptive services is an important strategy for preventing unintended pregnancies, which account for nearly one half of all U.S. pregnancies (1) and are associated with adverse maternal and infant health outcomes (2). Equitable, person-centered contraceptive access is also important to ensure reproductive autonomy (3). Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data collected during 2017-2019 were used to estimate the proportion of women aged 18-49 years who were at risk for unintended pregnancy* and had ongoing or potential need for contraceptive services.† Duri…

Heterogeneous impacts: adverse childhood experiences and cancer screening.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with higher odds of cancer in adulthood. One potential explanation for this association is the impact of ACEs on cancer screening. To address this shortcoming, this study examined how ACEs were associated with current compliance and ever use of prostate, breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening. METHODS: Data from the 2014 Kansas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were used (n = 11,794). Logistic regressions were used to calculate odds of cancer screening behaviors from each of nine different ACE items and …

A New Normal: An Age-Period-Cohort Analysis of the Transformed Childhood Adversity Landscape in the United States.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are strongly associated with poor physical, mental, and social outcomes, yet few studies have examined ACE prevalence across birth cohorts. We pooled Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2009-2012 and 2019-2024 (1925-2003 birth cohorts) and analyzed them using an Age-Period-Cohort (APC) model. Early cohorts (circa 1930) reported a mean ACE score < 1 (prevalence of ACE score ≥ 4: ~1 in 20), whereas late 1990s/early 2000s cohorts reported a mean score > 2 (prevalence of ACE score ≥ 4: ~1 in 4). In APC models, the 1955-1979 cohorts had …

Social determinants of health and family planning: impact of food and financial insecurity on contraceptive use and pregnancy intention.

AIM: In the United States, roughly one million pregnancies occur every year from the misuse and discontinuation of oral contraceptives - which may be affected by an individual's exposure to social determinants of health (SDOH). For those experiencing poorer SDOH, significant barriers may exist when family planning. Thus, our primary objective is to examine associations between domains of SDOH and contraceptive use as well as pregnancy intention using the Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 2017 BRFSS was conducted using the SDOH module to e

Adverse Effects of Non-Medical Use of Cannabis or Opioids Associated with Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Non-medical use of cannabis (NmC) and/or opioids (NmO) can lead to adverse health effects (AHEs), yet the proportion of these harms attributable to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) remains unclear. This study estimated the contribution of ACEs to AHEs from NmC and/or NmO among adults aged ≥18 years using 2019-2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from Arizona and Massachusetts. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of 24,739 respondents, linking past ACE exposure to self-reported NmC/NmO/NmC&NmO and related AHEs.
