Naringenin mitigates behavioral alterations and provides neuroprotection against 3-nitropropinoic acid-induced Huntington's disease like symptoms in rats.

BACKGROUND: Naringenin is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonoid which has been widely used as a therapeutic agent in various toxic models. However, few studies have clearly discussed the neuromodulatory effects of naringenin against different neurodegenerative disorders. AIM: We investigated the neuroprotective efficacy of naringenin against 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP)-induced neurobehavioral, biochemical and histopathological alterations in rats. METHODS: Albino Wistar rats were randomly divided into three experimental groups. Group 1, the vehicle administered group, recei

Memantine ameliorates learning and memory disturbance and the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in thiamine-deficient mice.

Several studies have reported on the beneficial effects of memantine on behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with Alzheimer's disease. However, the effects of memantine on BPSD-like behaviors in animals have not been well addressed. Here, the effects of memantine on memory disturbance and BPSD-like behaviors were evaluated in thiamine-deficient (TD) mice. Memantine (3 and 10 mg/kg, b.i.d.) was orally administered to ddY mice fed a TD diet for 22 days. During the treatment period, the forced swimming test, elevated plus-maze test, passive avoidance test, and loco

The effect of rumination and reappraisal on social anxiety symptoms during cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: There is growing interest in the role of transdiagnostic processes in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of mental disorders (Nolen-Hoeksema & Watkins, 2011). Two such transdiagnostic processes-rumination and reappraisal-are the focus of the present study. The main objective was to examine the roles of rumination (thought to be harmful) and reappraisal (thought to be helpful) in adults with social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHOD: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with 75 adults with SAD and examined pre- to post-CBT changes as well a

A case of drug-induced interstitial pneumonia potentially related to quetiapine (seroquel) therapy for behavioral and psychological symptoms.

Quetiapine is regarded as an effective and safe treatment for delirium. An 82-year-old man presented with a 1-week history of violent behavior and dizziness accompanied by weakness on the left side of his body. He was diagnosed with acute cerebral cortical infarction and delirium associated with alcohol abuse. After quetiapine treatment, he complained of fever and coughed up sputum, whereas his aggressive behavior improved. His symptoms persisted despite empirical antibiotic treatment. All diagnostic tests for infectious causes were negative. High-resolution computed tomography revealed bilate

Attenuation of Rhes activity significantly delays the appearance of behavioral symptoms in a mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by choreiform movement of the limbs, cognitive disability, psychosis … HD in vivo. We used a transgenic mouse model of HD crossed with Rhes knockout mice to show that the behavioral symptoms of HD are regulated by Rhes. HD(+)/Rhes(-/-) mice showed significantly delayed expression of HD-like symptoms in this in vivo model. Drugs that block or inhibit the actions of Rhes may be useful as the first treatments for HD.

Haloperidol versus thioridazine in the treatment of behavioral symptoms in senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type: preliminary findings.

To compare the efficacy and side effects of haloperidol and thioridazine in the management of behavioral symptoms of senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type, 16 patients were studied in an open crossover design study. Following 2-week drug washout, patients were alternately assigned to either haloperidol (1, 2, and 5 mg/day for 2 weeks) or thioridazine (25, 50, and 75 mg/day for 2 weeks). After completing the first neuroleptic, patients were washed out and then tried on the second neuroleptic. Six patients completed the crossover design, 1 received only haloperidol, and 9 received only thiorid…

Dietary behavior and its association with sleep-disordered breathing symptoms in Taiwanese children.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent in children and is associated with significant cognitive, metabolic, and quality-of-life (QOL) impairments. While obesity is a primary risk factor, the role of specific dietary behaviors as independent, modifiable contributors to SDB symptom severity remains underexplored. PURPOSE: We aimed to (1) examine the association between dietary intake and SDB symptom severity in children, and (2) develop and validate a dietary-based prediction model for moderate-to-severe SDB (msSDB). METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed baseli

Characterizing gender differences in appearance-related safety behaviors and their relationship with clinical symptoms.

Concerns with one's physical appearance is a core feature of multiple psychiatric disorders including body dysmorphic disorder and eating disorders. Recent research has evaluated smartphone-based interventions for appearance targeting appearance-related safety behaviors (ARSB), maladaptive strategies that individuals use to avoid being negatively evaluated due to their appearance. These studies have largely focused on women and excluded men representing a major gap in the literature. The present study sought to examine the relevance ARSBs in two studies. In Study 1, we examined the invariance

History of symptoms consistent with REM sleep behavior disorder in a population with Parkinson's Disease.

REM Sleep Behavioral Disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia marked by the maintenance of muscle tone during REM sleep. Evidence has placed RBD as one of the possible prodromal stages of Parkinson's Disease (PD), but data on the proportion of people with PD who have had symptoms of RBD are limited. This study aimed to investigate the history of symptoms compatible with RBD in a population with PD. The sample was composed by 73 patients with clinically diagnosed PD being followed up at a reference outpatient setting, compared to 73 age- and sex-matched individuals with no PD. The evaluation of symptoms

Unique transcriptional signatures correlate with behavioral and psychological symptom domains in Alzheimer's disease.

Despite the significant burden, cost, and worse prognosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), little is known about the molecular causes of these symptoms. Using antemortem assessments of BPSD in AD, we demonstrate that individual BPSD can be grouped into 4 domain factors in our cohort: affective, apathy, agitation, and psychosis. Then, we performed a transcriptome-wide analysis for each domain utilizing bulk RNA-seq of post-mortem anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) tissues. Though all 4 domains are associated with a predominantly downregulat

Childhhood Trauma in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: Dissociative, Psychotic Symptoms, and Suicide Behavior.

Current evidence suggests a high prevalence of childhood trauma (CT) among adult patients diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Exposure to CT might lead to clinical differences eventually observed in these patients. We present a cross-sectional study with 54 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder). We obtained sociodemographic data, as well as data on CT, dissociation, suicide history, and intensity of positive and negative psychotic symptoms. More than 75% of the patients reported a history of CT. We observed a link between CT and
