Social support needs of bereaved parents and family members after perinatal loss: A qualitative study.

Perinatal loss is a profoundly distressing experience for many families. While family and friends are often primary sources of informal support for bereaved parents, they may find it challenging to provide the support parents need. This study explores the social support experiences of parents and family members navigating perinatal bereavement in Australia with their informal social networks, drawing on semi-structured interviews with 20 parents and 5 family members. Reflexive thematic analysis identified three themes, along with seven sub-themes reflecting how informal support was enacted, ne…

End-of-life cancer care quality in rural areas of Japan: an exploratory bereaved family survey.

INTRODUCTION: Palliative care is essential for people with life-threatening illness, yet access remains inequitable in many rural areas. In Japan, rural disparities in end-of-life (EOL) cancer care have not been well described. This study examined rural-non-rural differences in EOL cancer care quality in Japan. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of a nationwide cross-sectional questionnaire survey of bereaved family members of adults who died from cancer in Japan in 2021. Rurality was defined using the Rurality Index for Japan, with rural areas defined as RIJ ≥ 75. Quality of EOL ca

Bereavement Following the Loss of a Partner Among LGBTIQ+ Individuals: A Scoping Review of the Evidence (2016-2026).

Background/Objectives: Grief following the death of a partner is a complex psychosocial process associated with an increased risk of prolonged grief, depression and suicidal ideation. Among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) individuals, these risks are exacerbated by stigma, relational invisibility and family rejection, often resulting in unrecognized or disenfranchised grief. This scoping review aimed to map the available evidence on the experiences of bereavement following the death of a partner among LGBTIQ+ individuals between 2016 and 2026, identifying stu…

End-of-life sedation and gendered narrative registers: a longitudinal qualitative study of spouses bereaved by cancer.

PURPOSE: This study investigates gendered narrative registers in spousal grief following cancer, within this sample and interview context, in palliative care settings including continuous deep sedation until death (CDSUD). It examines (1) how men and women narrate and experience bereavement and (2) how their emotional, relational, and cognitive processes evolve across the first year of bereavement (3, 6, and 12 months post-loss). METHODS: This longitudinal qualitative study is part of the AfterSedatio project. Twenty-two bereaved spouses (12 men and 10 women) were interviewed at 3 (T0), 6 (T1…

Resting-state functional connectivity of the rostral and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex in older bereaved adults.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are at higher risk of losing a loved one, with approximately 10 % developing prolonged grief disorder (PGD) after loss. PGD is characterized by distressing and impairing symptoms, reduced life quality, and increased suicide risk. While attentional processes may contribute to PGD pathophysiology, the rostral (rACC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) appear to play different yet complementary roles in attention in the bereavement context. However, the respective contributions of the connectivity of these two regions in PGD symptom severity have never been evalua…

Bereavement and support in the conduct of everyday life: Insights from dual experiences of loss and drug use.

Aims: Individuals with a history of heavy drug use are especially vulnerable to losing loved ones to drug-related deaths, and drug use and complicated grief reactions are closely linked. However, limited knowledge exists on supporting them through bereavement. The present study, which was conducted in Norway, aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how individuals dealing with heavy drug use and bereavement can be supported through professional support services. The bereaved person's reflections on help experiences are seen as grounded in their conduct of everyday life. Methods: We co…

Depressive symptom trajectories in suicide-bereaved individuals: A 24-year study from adolescence to adulthood.

Adolescents who experience bereavement following suicide are at increased risk for adverse outcomes, including depression. However, there is limited research on the heterogeneity of depressive symptoms or its long-term course among this population. Using a self-reported 3-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) administered across five waves spanning from adolescence to adulthood (1994-2018, with intervals of 1, 5, 7, and 9 years), we identified trajectories of depressive symptoms over a 24-year span in a sample of adolescents (n = 236) who reported at bas…

However, it is still unclear what is currently known and not known about the experiences of CYP bereaved during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. [Factors related to bereaved family's satisfaction with end-of-life care at geriatric health services facilities].

Objectives In Japan, the proportion of older people receiving end-of-life care in geriatric health services facilities (GHSF) is increasing. However, to our knowledge, there have been no previous studies investigating the relationship between the structure of GHSFs and the quality of end-of-life care evaluated by bereaved families. Methods We secondarily analyzed data from the survey done by the Japan Association of Geriatric Health Services Facilities (JAGHSF) in January 2014. Study subjects were 3 recently bereaved family members who had experienced planned end-of-life care at different facil

Development and piloting of a novel, peer-led bereavement intervention for young people living with HIV in Zimbabwe.

Background: Research emphasizes lasting psychological implications when young people are not adequately supported following close family deaths. In sub-Saharan Africa, adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) experience multiple personal deaths along with other serious losses. ALHIV highlight that not processing their grief negatively impacts their daily lives including their ART adherence. This article describes the development and piloting of a bereavement intervention for ALHIV in Zimbabwe. Methods: Formative research with 10 ALHIV peer counsellors (18-21 years) supported intervention developmen…

BACKGROUND: India is estimated to have the largest number of stillbirths globally. Although the health system in India has made significant strides in maternal and newborn care, the bereavement needs of the parents’ experiencing stillbirth have not received attention. As recognising that grief and coping processes are influenced by many socio-cultural contexts, it is critical to comprehend the experiences and unmet needs of bereaved families in India. Therefore, this study aims to develop a culturally appropriate bereavement care package that is integrated within the current maternal health se…

Spousal bereavement and four-year trajectories of medication use: A nationwide register-based study in Swedish older adults.

BACKGROUND: Medication use around widowhood has been poorly described for most medication classes. Medication use patterns can reflect health consequences of spousal loss, as previously shown for psychotropic drugs. METHODS: We used data from nationwide health registers (2008-2020) to describe the patterns of use of dispensed medications in all widowed Swedes aged ≥65 years followed between 2 years before and 2 years after spousal death. All prescription drugs used by at least 5% of the cohort were considered according to their therapeutic subgroups (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical [ATC] clas

METHODS: We recruited caregivers of individuals who previously received palliative care treatment and were now deceased. The study was conducted in a public hospital in New York City predominantly serving low-income patients. Treatments were either CBT or supportive care counseling. Treatment consisted of eight sessions over six months. Outcomes…
