[Treatment of various forms of tense headaches by biofeedback].

Efficiency of electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback (BFB) in the treatment of tension type headache (TTH) has been analyzed. 50 patients with episodic and chronic TTH have been treated by a standard course of BFB-therapy (10 sessions). The results have been compared with the data in comparison group (12 patients who received lerivon therapy) and in controls (15 healthy individuals). The severity index has been calculated, different psychologic data have been tested, the amplitude of EMG of frontal, temporal, trapezius, orbicularis oris muscles has been examined. The best results have been obtain

The value of fluoroscopic defecography in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of defecation disorders in children.

BACKGROUND: Defecography is a study to assess anorectal function during evacuation. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the value of fluoroscopic defecography in directing diagnostic and therapeutic management in children with defecation disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed all fluoroscopic defecography studies performed (2003-2009) in children with defecation problems and normal anorectal motility studies. Results were classified into three groups: (1) normal pelvic floor function; (2) pelvic floor dyssynergia, including incomplete relaxation of pelvic musculature, inconsistent change in ano

Exploring autonomic dysfunction in functional dysphonia: A protocol for a case-control study and a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although psychological factors have been implicated in patients with functional dysphonia (FD), conventional voice therapy (CVT) typically targets the aberrant voice symptoms exclusively. Yet, CVT is not always successful, and in view of the significant adverse quality of life impact combined with the financial burden on the healthcare system and society, research is needed to elucidate the underlying psychophysiology of FD and improve treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The first objective of this research project is to compare the occurrence and frequency of symptoms and/or disorder

A Preliminary Study of Voluntary Cough Motor Performance and Learning With Skill Training and Biofeedback.

PURPOSE: Sensorimotor cough skill training (CST) has been shown to improve cough strength, as well as facilitate changes during training (i.e., motor performance) and generalization to untrained tasks (i.e., motor learning). However, there is a gap in our understanding of the effects of voluntary CST (without sensory stimuli) on motor performance and learning. Furthermore, the contribution of physiologic factors, such as lung volume, a driver of cough strength in healthy adults, and treatment-specific factors, such as biofeedback, remains unexamined. METHOD: Twenty individuals with Parkinson'

Revolutionizing motor dysfunction treatment: A novel closed-loop electrical stimulator guided by multiple motor tasks with predictive control.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been demonstrated as a viable method for addressing motor dysfunction in individuals affected by stroke, spinal cord injury, and other etiologies. By eliciting muscle contractions to facilitate joint movements, FES plays a crucial role in fostering the restoration of motor function compromised nervous system. In response to the challenge of muscle fatigue associated with conventional FES protocols, a novel biofeedback electrical stimulator incorporating multi-motor tasks and predictive control algorithms has been developed to enable adaptive modulati

Biofeedback physical regulation of hypertension based on acupoints: A clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a predominant risk factor for cardiovascular disease and has imposed a global disease burden. Poor medication compliance is the major obstacle to antihypertensive drug therapy, and negative mood status is also detrimental to blood pressure (BP) management. While transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS), as an electrical stimulation modality for biofeedback physical regulation based on acupoints, offers a such nondrug alternative option that is noninvasive, safe, and effective with high adherence. However, the optimal stimulation parameters of TEAS for h

Differential effects of visual versus auditory biofeedback training for voluntary postural sway.

Augmented sensory biofeedback training is often used to improve postural control. Our previous study showed that continuous auditory biofeedback was more effective than continuous visual biofeedback to improve postural sway while standing. However, it has also been reported that both discrete visual and auditory biofeedback training, presented intermittently, improves bimanual task performance more than continuous visual biofeedback training. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relative effectiveness of discrete visual biofeedback versus discrete auditory biofeedback to improve post

[Improvement of vision through perceptual learning in the case of refractive errors and presbyopia : A critical valuation].

The idea of compensating or even rectifying refractive errors and presbyopia with the help of vision training is not new. For most approaches, however, scientific evidence is insufficient. A currently promoted method is "perceptual learning", which is assumed to improve stimulus processing in the brain. The basic phenomena of perceptual learning have been demonstrated by a multitude of studies. Some of these specifically address the case of refractive errors and presbyopia. However, many open questions remain, in particular with respect to the transfer of practice effects to every-day vision.

Direction of attentional focus in biofeedback treatment for /r/ misarticulation.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining an external direction of focus during practice is reported to facilitate acquisition of non-speech motor skills, but it is not known whether these findings also apply to treatment for speech errors. This question has particular relevance for treatment incorporating visual biofeedback, where clinician cueing can direct the learner's attention either internally (i.e., to the movements of the articulators) or externally (i.e., to the visual biofeedback display). AIMS: This study addressed two objectives. First, it aimed to use single-subject experimental methods to collec

[IMPACT OF INDIVIDUAL PERSONALITY FEATURES ON ABILITY TO VOLUNTARY REGULATION OF EXPRESSION EEG ALPHA AND BETA FREQUENCIES].

The ability to voluntary control severity of alpha- and beta-2 frequency bands in the parietal and frontal cortical areas was investigated at 17 volunteers using biofeedback. The impact of different personality traits on the effectiveness of control was evaluated. According to the data, it was easier task to decrease expression beta-2 frequency in the frontal cortex than to decline the power of alpha frequency in the parietal cortex. The effectiveness of voluntary control of brain activity is influenced by personality features as extraversion, psychoticism, neuroticism, mobility and steadiness

Technology and the evolution of clinical methods for stuttering.

UNLABELLED: The World Wide Web (WWW) was 20 years old last year. Enormous amounts of information about stuttering are now available to anyone who can access the Internet. Compared to 20 years ago, people who stutter and their families can now make more informed choices about speech-language interventions, from a distance. Blogs and chat rooms provide opportunities for people who stutter to share their experiences from a distance and to support one another. New technologies are also being adopted into speech-language pathology practice and service delivery. Telehealth is an exciting development

Effects of electromyographic and mechanomyographic biofeedback on upper trapezius muscle activity during standardized computer work.

The purpose of this laboratory study was to investigate the effects of surface electromyography (EMG)- and mechanomyography (MMG)-based audio and visual biofeedback during computer work. Standardized computer work was performed for 3 min with/without time constraint and biofeedback in a randomized order. Biofeedback was given on the basis of an individual preset threshold value for the right trapezius EMG and MMG signal and a time factor (repetition of events above the threshold). The duration of muscle activity above the preset threshold, the right trapezius EMG and MMG root mean square (RMS)

Behavioral management of recurrent headache: three decades of experience and empiricism.

In the past three decades, behavioral interventions (chiefly relaxation, biofeedback, and stress-management) have become standard components of the armamentarium for management of migraine and tension-type headaches. Meta-analytic literature reviews of these behavioral interventions have consistently identified clinically significant reductions in recurrent headache. Across studies, behavioral interventions have yielded approximately 35-50% reduction in migraine and tension-type headache activity. Although we have only recently begun to directly compare standard drug and nondrug treatments for
