Valorization and Characterization of Agricultural and Forest Biomass Residues Through Colloidal Lignin Particle Production.

The valorization of secondary biomass streams is an important step toward more resource-efficient biorefinery concepts and reduced dependence on fossil-based materials. In this study, agricultural and forest residues, namely Atlas cedar cones, mixed conifer cones, hazelnut shells, walnut shells, coffee silverskin, and cocoa shells, were investigated as feedstocks for producing colloidal lignin particles. Lignin-rich extracts were obtained by Organosolv pretreatment using 60 wt% aqueous ethanol, followed by particle formation through solvent shifting and purification by ultrafiltration. A parti…

Extraction of astaxanthin from fresh Haematococcus pluvialis biomass: a sustainable approach using vegetable oils.

In this study, we developed an optimized process targeting the key challenges in extracting astaxanthin from fresh H. pluvialis biomass. First, we compared the effectiveness of several commonly used cell disruption methods (acidic and alkaline hydrolysis, ultrasound, enzymatic treatment, and freeze-thaw cycles) on astaxanthin yield and quality. We then evaluated the effects of polar (alcohols: methanol, ethanol, and glycerol) and non-polar solvents (argan, cannabis, and olive oils) on astaxanthin extraction under different conditions (temperature and extraction time). Alkaline treatment with 1…

Research Progress in Chitin/Chitosan-Based Biomass Adhesives: Extraction Processes, Composite and Chemical Modification.

Traditional fossil-based adhesives, hindered by issues such as formaldehyde emission, dependence on fossil resources, and poor biodegradability, struggle to meet the global demand for low-carbon green development. Biomass-based adhesives have thus emerged as a core alternative. Among them, chitin/chitosan derived from biomass waste such as shrimp and crab shells demonstrates significant potential in the adhesive field due to its renewability, controllable structure, biocompatibility, and inherent antibacterial properties. However, mainstream biomass adhesives like soy protein and starch adhesi…

Seawater mercury species and phytoplankton biomass drive bioaccumulation in a coastal plankton food web.

Plankton plays a key role in the bioconcentration and biomagnification of mercury (Hg) in marine food webs. Few studies have investigated th … 15 ng g-1DW) and zooplankton (5-478, 2-36 ng g-1DW). Temporal variability suggests that, under high biomass conditions, high MeHg uptake by phytoplankton may deplete seawater concentrations, limiting passive bioaccumulation in zooplankton. Conversely, low biomass was consistent with low MeHg uptake in phytoplankton, most likely favoring passive bioaccumul …

Humidity-dependent viscosity and hygroscopicity after aging with SO2 of biomass burning single nanoparticle.

Although understanding the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles is essential to studying their impact on climate and health, information on the viscosity of nanoparticles composed of organic and inorganic salts, as well as the aging process with soluble polluting gases is still rare. In this work, based on a high contrast imaging device enabled by the photonic chip, we measured the hygroscopic growth factors (GFs) of nanoparticles of KCl and glucose mixed in different organic and inorganic dry mass ratios (OIRs). In addition, we also proposed a viscosity retrieval method to quantify the

Region-specific forest structure pathways reveal climate effects on old-growth tropical forest biomass.

Old-growth tropical forests store vast amounts of carbon in their aboveground biomass (AGB), yet the relative roles of abiotic factors such as climate, soil, and topography in governing its spatial distribution remain poorly understood. In particular, the degree to which climate acts on AGB through forest structure is still poorly quantified at the pantropical scale. Using a pantropical dataset of more than 2,000 old-growth forest plots and a structure-explicit framework, we assess how climate influences AGB through its effects on four structural attributes: basal area, mean diameter, stem den…

Environmental impact analysis of biomass straw substituting coal in the rural building heating sector.

Biomass energy is a clean and environmentally friendly renewable energy source, and the transition to biomass is driven by both environmental goals (carbon neutrality) and the feasibility based on biomass availability. This paper develops a new model to assess the feasibility of using biomass as a coal substitute for heating rural buildings. To assess the feasibility of this model, a case study was conducted in China's Heilongjiang province. We collected data on crop straw availability from 2005 to 2020 and analyzed coal consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in rural building heating from 2…

Strategic Carbon Source Selection Enhances Biomass and Paramylon Yields in Mixotrophic Euglena gracilis Cultivation.

Euglena gracilis's mixotrophic metabolism offers biotechnological potential. This study investigated how glucose, sodium acetate, ethanol, and propanetriol regulate its growth, photosynthesis, and paramylon production. All carbon sources boosted paramylon yield versus photoautotrophic controls. Ethanol and glucose were both highly effective, supporting the highest biomass accumulation (5.71 and 4.42-fold increases, respectively) and paramylon content without a significant difference between them. Ethanol supplementation enhanced chlorophyll b via coupled TCA cycle/glyoxylate shunt activity, wh…

Biomass-derived lignin nanoparticles for the sustained delivery of vascular endothelial growth factor-C.

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor C (VEGFC) is a promising biological drug, with preclinical studies indicating its potential for treating myocardial infarction, neurodegenerative diseases, and lymphedema, a condition that currently lacks curative treatment. While adenoviral VEGFC gene therapy has progressed to phase II studies, its clinical efficacy is limited by rapid immune inactivation. This study explores lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) as an alternative VEGFC delivery system. Lignin was extracted from grape shoot-derived wood biomass via the organosolv method and used to synthesize LNPs. Th…

Determination of specific surface area of biomass activated carbon vial headspace gas chromatography technique.

This paper introduces a method for determining the specific surface area (SSA) of biomass activated carbon (BAC) using a tracer-based headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) technique. The method relies on the adsorption equilibrium of methanol on BAC samples at elevated temperature. A mathematical model allows for the calculation of SSA from the methanol signal obtained during the headspace analysis. The results demonstrate high precision (relative standard deviation < 2.44%) and strong accuracy (correlation with the conventional BET-N2 adsorption method, R² = 0.986). This method offers several …

Microwave synthesized novel biomass carbon dots applied in the fluorescent detection of crystal violet.

To establish a new method for detecting crystal violet (CV), a harmful dye, herein, a genre of novel biomass carbon dots (CDs) was synthesized via a microwave method and employed as a fluorescent probe, in which water spinach and polyethylene glycol (PEG) performed as raw materials. Based on the inner filter effect (IFE) between the luminescent CDs and CV, the blue emission of this probe at 430 nm could be quenched by CV. Hence, a new strategy was proposed to selectively determine CV in aquaculture ambient. Moreover, under the optimal experiment conditions, this method showed a good linearity …

Biochemical production of bio-based terephthalic acid from lignocellulosic biomass for CO2 emission reduction.

Terephthalic acid, a key precursor for polyester production, is traditionally derived from fossil resources, contributing to global warming. Although numerous studies have explored the production of terephthalic acid from biomass polysaccharides, energy-intensive chemical processes are predominantly employed. In this study, we have developed a biochemical process to produce bio-based terephthalic acid from lignocellulosic biomass for reducing CO2 emissions. Among the tested six underutilized lignocellulosic biomasses, hardwood, with high cellulose contents of 52.8%, was subjected to alkaline p…
